When your car's make or model is more desirable in the car market, your valuation will increase.
The less damage to your car, the higher your car quote will be. Mechanical faults, scratches, dents, and signs of wear and tear impact your car's value
Lower mileage cars tend to retain their value more than higher mileage cars due to less wear and tear meaning the car is in a better condition.
Age depreciation is one of the biggest factors that affects a car’s price when selling it. The older a car is, the less you may get for the vehicle.
Optional extras and modifications, such as alloys and upgraded tech, could see you getting a higher offer. However, some other modifications may decrease the value, such as lowered suspension.
Some colours of cars are more sought after than others. This can also vary depending on the manufacturer brand and car model.
If your car has a full service history, it shows it has been well-maintained, which will return a higher offer than a car that has gaps or missing service history records.
Cars with fewer previous owners tend to be worth more, as a car with several previous owners may indicate there is an issue with the car.
The market price of cars fluctuates on a regular basis due to many factors. This can be due to overall demand, time of year, and new car production.

FAQs
Our online car valuation tool allows you to give us a detailed overview of the vehicle's condition by telling us about the general condition of your car and anything that we should be made aware of. We will ask about the interior, exterior and mechanical condition. Then, our calculator will provide an accurate valuation based on the information you have provided to us.
Yes. Our valuation tool has been designed for you to tell us as much information as possible about the condition of your car. It is easy to tell us about any damage your car may have, from panel damage to mechanical faults. A damaged car valuation, as with all our valuations, will be subject to inspection by one of our experts, as the levels of damage can significantly vary.
To get an accurate valuation, you will need to know your car mileage. However, if you don't have the exact mileage, our valuation tool will populate the mileage on your car from its last MOT. Of course, providing as much detail as possible will ensure that the car value offer you receive is as accurate as possible.
Arnold Clark has been buying and valuing cars since 1954, and we're committed to helping our customers get the best price for their vehicle. The Used Car Price Guide was once the go-to guide for car pricing in the UK, but this process has since been replaced with Arnold Clark's own industry-leading online free valuation calculator. Automotive experts Cap HPI help us to deliver accurate valuations by integrating their expansive data set of over 4,000 daily sales with our own to provide our customers and users with fair and reliable quotes. Want to know what your car is worth? Give our calculator a try!
Our car valuation tool provides its quotes based on the registration of the car in combination with the mileage, so the quote is adjusted automatically. This allows Arnold Clark to provide you with accurate quotes for the age and mileage of your vehicle with no additional mileage adjustment required.
Yes. We give you an initial valuation for your car by your registration and mileage only. We provide your car valuation on screen as part of the calculation process. Once you have completed the process, you may request the quote to be sent via email or you can book an appointment at one of our national locations to finalise the quote. We offer a 7-day price guarantee when buying vehicles so, as long as the car is in the condition stated, you can be one of the 95% of our users that get the amount quoted by our calculator with or without email.
The registration of your car provides almost everything we need to give a ballpark figure. To get a more accurate car valuation, however, we need further details, as those really allow us to provide a quote that 95% of our customers accept.
The information provided to you after you have completed and submitted the form includes your initial quote details, your car registration, description, and the mileage of the car associated with that registration. It will also include the date that the used car valuation offer is valid until pending inspection.
Optional extras can make cars on sale more attractive to potential buyers, but not all of them will add value when you come to sell it. Aesthetic choices, such as body kits, alloy wheels and other cosmetic additions, may not make any change to the quote provided. Also, added options become less relevant the older the car gets, something to keep in mind when you are looking to sell or to buy.
The value of these added extras typically depreciates to around 50-60% after the first year and down to 20-25% after five years. When a car reaches seven years or older, the extras become more of an incentive to buyers rather than changing the list price of the vehicle. If you are looking for a car valuation guide that will provide an accurate price, our calculator looks for optional extras that we know increase the price.
The main factor to remember is that few options will really impact the vehicle's cost, especially if the car has a few years on it. Instead, calculators will prioritise mileage, which is the main factor to consider when thinking about price range. A low-mileage car compared to a mid or high-mileage car of a comparable age might impact the quote by hundreds of pounds.
The Arnold Clark car valuation calculator, unfortunately, does not have the ability to value specialist vehicles such as classic cars. To make sure that the quotes we provide are as accurate as possible, we don't give quotes on cars over 23 years old. If we can't value your car online, we do provide a manual form that can be completed, and a member of our team will then be in touch to help you with your request.
If you do own a classic car which is in immaculate condition and has low mileage, then a specialist might be the best place to provide you with a more accurate market price.
Currently, our car valuation calculator does not process number plates that use the old prefix number plate registrations (letter to year) and can only provide valuations on the current millennium registrations; these started in 2001 with the 51 plate.
Mileage is one of the biggest determining factors when it comes to used car valuation, particularly when measured against the age of the car. The more miles driven per year will directly impact the value a car retains. This is because, typically, the more miles on a car, the more wear and tear. A car with a lower mileage will typically hold a higher value than a higher mileage vehicle of the same age and specification.
Yes, we can. When you complete the car valuation form, you will be asked whether the car is an insurance total loss (write-off) - Cat N and Cat S options are part of this question. As you would expect from cars with this type of damage, all quotes would need to be thoroughly inspected by one of our experts. If you don't realise you have a car with this type of damage, this will impact your offer which would be revised upon inspection.
Category S, or CAT S, refers to structural damage. This can be extensive damage that the insurer has not repaired. However, this doesn't mean it is unrepairable and can't be made roadworthy. Roadworthiness is determined by the DVLA and evidence of standard of repair will be required as well as a completed Vehicle Identify Form (VIC).
Category D, or CAT N, refers to non-structural damage on a vehicle that the insurer has chosen not to repair. This might be because the insurer determined that the damage partially falls within the 'Beyond Economical Repair' or BER category. This usually means replacing the parts is not economically viable considering the scope of the damage. However, as with CAT S, a CAT N car can be made roadworthy with the appropriate repairs.
Arnold Clark is here to make your car valuation process as smooth and as easy as possible. If that means taking your car into one of our local dealerships to receive an appraisal of your car's value, then we are more than happy to help and facilitate this for you.
