Alfa Romeo is known for producing cars with a unique style, so when the Stelvio SUV arrived in 2017, it effortlessly turned heads. The Stelvio was the Italian brand’s first entrant into the SUV market and was launched with a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines. These all offer a dynamic drive, typical of an Alfa Romeo. . Premium materials are used both externally and internally, making the Stelvio a luxury option for both families and individuals.

The Stelvio Quadrifoglio was introduced a year after the initial launch. This variant produces 503bhp thanks to a 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine. Blending performance practicality and charismatic design, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio picked up a number of accolades, including the inaugural ‘Driver’s Award’ at the 2018 Carwow Awards.

As a prestige model, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio rivals vehicles such as the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. However, the Stelvio is difficult to match when it comes to interior style and sheer driving pleasure.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio updates and facelifts

In 2018, the Stelvio’s entry-level 2.2-litre 177bhp diesel engine was given a power boost, increasing its output to 187bhp. At this time, all trims were given Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. A further update occurred in January 2020, when the model’s interior was upgraded and the trim structure was revised. As such, the range included Super, Sprint, Lusso Ti, Veloce and Quadrifoglio variants. In December 2020, the Veloce Ti trim was introduced at the top of the range.

A facelift occurred in 2023, bringing design tweaks to align the model with the Alfa Romeo Tonale hybrid SUV. A fresh lighting signature and a new paint finish for the grille were incorporated on the exterior. Inside, the Stelvio was given a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with three different menu designs. At this point the trim structure was slimmed down too, offering just four grades: Sprint, Veloce,Competizione and Quadrifoglio.

Practicality and style of the car

A generous boot enables you to fit all the essentials into the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. Whether you’re carrying the grocery shop, gym bags, golf clubs or suitcases, the 525-litre boot will accommodate them. Compared to rivals, luggage capacity is competitive; both the Volvo XC60 and Porsche Macan have smaller boots, at 483 litres and 488 litres respectively. The rear seats split 40/20/40 and fold down too, creating an overall cargo volume of 1,600 litres.

SUVs are often used for towing, so it’s no surprise that the Stelvio is capable in this area. It can haul a maximum unbraked weight of 750kg, which is ideal for those towing a small trailer or fully laden trailer tent. The petrol variant can pull a braked weight of up to 1,600kg, while the diesel has a braked towing limit of 2,300kg. That means those with a large caravan or a horsebox can tow it easily with the Stelvio.

Running costs

Given the Alfa Romeo Stelvio’s premium feel, its running costs are pleasingly low. The model occupies groups 29–37 out of 50 for insurance, making its premiums on a par with those of the BMW X3 (groups 28 to 43) and cheaper than those of many Volvo XC60 variants (groups 31 to 44).

Road tax depends on the original list price of the iteration you choose. Those with a list price of under £40,000 are charged at the standard £180 per year. Those over that price incur a £390 surcharge for the first five years of tax renewal. That puts annual payments at £570, after which they revert to the standard £180 charge.

How a used Alfa Romeo Stelvio drives

Whichever Alfa Romeo Stelvio you choose, you can be sure of impressive performance and a dynamic drive. There are both petrol and diesel options available in addition to the engine boasted by the supercar-rivalling Quadrifoglio.

The entry-level petrol is a 2.0-litre unit producing 197bhp. Mated to eight-speed automatic transmission and with a four-wheel drive setup, this engine takes you from 0-62mph in 7.2 seconds and returns a combined fuel economy of 30.4mpg. For more power, opt for the 2.0-litre unit producing 276bhp and 400Nm of torque. This has the same automatic gearbox and all-wheel drivetrain and can reach 62mph from a standstill in just 5.7 seconds. Impressively, efficiency remains the same at 30.4mpg on the combined cycle.

The diesel lineup starts with a 2.2-litre diesel. This originally produced 177bhp but was updated in 2018 to provide 187bhp. Both editions take you from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds and return a combined fuel economy of 44.1mpg. The most powerful diesel is a 2.2-litre engine with 207bhp. This reaches 62mph from a standstill in 6.6 seconds and returns 43.3mpg on the combined cycle. Like the petrol units, both diesel options are paired with eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

After the 2023 update, only the 276bhp petrol and 207bhp diesel engines were available . As such, choosing a model from that year onwards becomes simplier.

Topping th e lineup is the 2.9-litre petrol engine available on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio. This twin-turbo V6 unit has an output of 503bhp, taking you from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds. Fuel economy is 28.8mpg on the combined cycle.
