What is the Audi A5 Black Edition?
The Audi A5 Black Edition is one of the premium trim levels available across the A5 range. Launched in 2013, midway through the run of the Mk1, the Black Edition is a high-entry trim level across much of Audi’s range of vehicles. The Black Edition offers luxurious interiors and the top spec engines available in each model.
While initially launched as part of the Mk1, the Black Edition has been a mainstay trim across the A5 throughout its subsequent iterations. The Audi A5 comes in a range of sizes, from a three-door Coupé to a five-door Sportback. Across these various models, the Black Edition sits above trims like the entry-level Sport and the S-line, and is more in line with the Vorsprung, another premium-level offering.
The Black Edition is an attractive option for a wide range of car buyers. Its larger five-door versions make more practical, family-friendly vehicles, while the Coupés may be more attractive to thrill seekers. What is consistent across all iterations of the A5 Black Edition though, is premium quality in the cabin and a wealth of features that enhance comfort and practicality. Thanks to this, there aren’t many models to rival the A5 Black Edition, the closest being the BMW 4 Series Coupé M440i and the Lexus RC Coupé.
Audi A5 Black Edition history
The Audi A5 first arrived on the UK market in the late noughties as a coupé alternative to the widely popular Audi A4. The A5 Mk1 was Audi’s first foray into the executive coupé market since the mid-nineties but was swiftly followed by a cabriolet version and a Sportback model.
In 2011, the Audi A5 received a facelift across its full range of models, including the Coupé, Convertible, Sportback, S, and RS iterations. This update saw design changes to the exterior, with new front and rear lights added, as well as a newly designed front bumper.
It was this updated Mk1 Audi A5 that saw the first appearance of the Black Edition trim. With a design similar to the high-end S Line model, the Black Edition was introduced as another premium offering of the A5. It included larger wheels, fully leather upholstery in the cabin and state-of-the-art tech to assist driving and enhance all-round comfort.
The Black Edition Audi A5 Mk1 was made available in both the Coupé and Sportback models, with six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes available across the top range of engines. Engines range from a 1.8-litre petrol TFSI engine to a 3.0-litre TDI diesel with four-wheel drive. The 2.0-litre TFSI petrol and 3.0-litre TDI diesel are mated to the Audi's quattro four-wheel-drive system.
The Mk2 Audi A5 was launched in 2017. Increasing its practicality levels, the Mk2 offered a larger boot – up to 1,079 litres of space with the rear seats down – and more space in the cabin. This broadened its appeal from just car enthusiasts to those also seeking a smaller luxury family car. It won the What Car? Coupé of the Year award in 2019.
The Black Edition, available for the Coupé version of the Mk2, tops the trim range, with huge 20-inch wheels and a wealth of luxurious features added onto the already plush interior.
In 2024, the Audi A5 is expected to replace the A4 and S4 sedan in a move that will incorporate EV technology across more of its range.
Where does the Audi A5 Black Edition sit in the range?
Since its introduction to the Audi range, the Black Edition has been one of the most luxurious trim levels available. While the S Line is often the original top-level trim when a new Audi is launched, the introduction of the Black Edition further into its lifespan bumps the S Line down to second spot. Opting for the Black Edition will add black aesthetic features to the exterior and the cabin, setting it apart design-wise from its counterparts.
The Black Edition always includes the most powerful engine options in its range, and this is no different for the A5 on both the Mk1 and Mk2.
What features and equipment does the Audi A5 Black Edition have?
The Black Edition spares no expenses when it comes to features and equipment. Its Mk1 comes with premium leather seats and characteristic black colouring throughout the cabin – including piano black inlays and a flat-bottomed black steering wheel. It also ups the size of the wheels to 19-inch alloys and the black styling is evident on the exterior. The grille is a polished black, while the number plate holder and fog light surrounds are matt black.
The Mk2 Audi A5 Black Edition, available as a coupé, comes with an even more impressive range of features. Again, the interior is finished with black instead of the chrome colouring of other A5 Mk2 options. There’s a real touch of class with the Audi Beam LED puddle lights too, which are a feature exclusively available on the Black Edition. These all come with other impressive features and equipment, like a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system – with sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration – as well as three-zone climate control, a Virtual Cockpit and wireless phone charging.
