What is the BMW 2 Series M240i?
The BMW 2 Series M240i is the top trim in the 2-Series range, associated with the BMW 2 Series coupé. With its sporty looks, which include a rear spoiler and diffuser, large air intakes and 19-inch alloy wheels, it stands apart from its siblings. Where it truly excels is performance. Boasting a larger engine than the rest of the range, as well as upgraded brakes and a limited slip differential, it delivers a thrilling drive that will delight those whose priority is punchy performance and precise handling on the roads.
The BMW 2 Series M240i finds rivals in the Toyota GT86, the Porsche 718 Cayman and the Ford Mustang with its powerful performance. However, its ability to seat four makes it a more practical option than the Porsche 718 Cayman.
BMW 2 Series M240i history
The BMW 2 Series was launched in 2014, when the German manufacturer decided to separate its two-door models from the popular 2 Series range. A subcompact executive car, it was released first as a Coupé before Convertible, Gran Coupé, Active Tourer and Gran Tourer MPV editions were added. Initially, the model had a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive setup. There was also the option of a four-wheel xDrive system.
The high-performance M240i arrived part-way through the 2 Series’ life cycle. Under the bonnet, this two-door coupé has a 3.0-litre 335bhp petrol engine developing 500Nm of torque. Paired with either manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, it delivers a 0-62mph time of 4.3-4.8 seconds. As such, it’s thrilling to drive without compromising significantly on the efficiency of its less powerful petrol siblings.
Production on this first-generation M240i ended in 2020, and the Mk2 replaced it in 2021. The 3.0-litre engine remains, but receives a boost in power, producing a total of 369bhp. Peak torque is the same at 500Nm, and this combination sends the vehicle from 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds. The M240i also features the xDrive setup, delivering more power to the rear wheels than the front while offering maximum traction and stability.
The Mk2 M240i also distinguishes itself from the competition with its practicality. Thanks to rear seats and a 390-litre boot, it retains more everyday utility than many rivals. As a top-spec variant, it also comes well-equipped, with leather trim, three-zone climate control and Amazon Alexa integration.
Design changes made the 2021 M240i more striking too. With sharp angles, bold creases and slimmer headlights, this variant looks every bit the performance car it is.
Where does the BMW 2 Series M240i sit in the range?
The BMW 2 Series M240i is a development on the manufacturer’s M Performance sub-brand. It occupies a space between the top of the regular 2 Series range and the sportier and more supercar-like M2 model. Unlike the M2, the M240i is equipped with the xDrive system, which makes it more capable in challenging weather conditions. It has a more powerful engine than the other 2 Series trims, as well as upgraded brakes and enhanced styling features.
What features and equipment does the BMW 2 Series M240i have?
The M240i has an understated exterior, looking similar to its 2 Series Coupé siblings. Notable differences include 19-inch alloy wheels and M Sport brakes with red callipers. Step inside and the regular front seats have been replaced with heated and leather-upholstered sports seats that incorporate large bolsters to offer maximum support through corners. There are also BMW’s M colours – blue, red and violet – stitched into the seats and seatbelts.
The 10.25-inch central touchscreen runs BMW’s OS 7 infotainment system, which offers access to your smartphone apps via Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. It can also be controlled by Amazon Alexa. DAB radio and Bluetooth come as standard. Other technology includes front and rear parking sensors, selectable drive modes and adaptive cruise control. Performance-enhancing measures come in the form of an M Sport differential, sports suspension and double VANOS, which controls the air intake and exhaust camshafts to improve torque.
Safety is a key consideration for high-performance vehicles, and the BMW 2 Series M240i comes well-equipped to protect all occupants. Standard kit includes forward collision warning, which helps to prevent low-speed accidents by detecting objects in your path and sounding an alert. You’ll also get automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring.
