What is the Ford Fiesta ST-Line?

Belonging to one of the most famous car families of all time, the ST-Line trim is now a key part of the Ford Fiesta’s rich lineage. Sitting in the mid-level trim range for the Mk7 and Mk8 Fiestas, the ST-Line was launched onto UK markets in 2016 as an updated version of the Zetec S. Combining two of Ford’s greatest assets, the ST-Line is stylish and affordable. It encompasses much of the premium offering that the top-of-the-range Fiesta ST includes but is a more economical option that markets itself to a broader audience.

From the outside, the ST-Line trim has many similarities to the flagship ST option. It’s sleek and stylish with a bespoke body kit but holds back on the all-out sporty nature of the hot-hatch ST. As such, it strikes a perfect balance across its Mk7 and Mk8 iterations, giving it an appeal to the petrolheads and practical-minded urban drivers alike.

Ford Fiesta ST-Line history

The Fiesta model was first launched in 1976 and has since gone on to sell over 22 million models. Ford added the ST-Line to the trim hierarchy in 2016, replacing the Zetec S line. This was introduced to market in response to the consistent popularity of its ST counterpart. Standing for ‘Sports Technologies’, the ST-Line mirrors the premium features of the Ford Fiesta ST while retaining plenty of practicality too.

Joining the Mk7 trim range, the ST-Line comes with a signature styling pack. This includes a sportier exterior design with redesigned front and rear bumpers as well as a stiffer sports suspension which means the model sits 10mm lower compared to the entry-level trim.

For more styling, this trim launched with bespoke alloy wheel designs and a blacked-out chrome window line. Inside, the ST-Line features very supportive sports-inspired front seats and aluminium pedals.

The ST-Line was featured in the trim lineup for the Fiesta Mk8, which was released in 2017. As with the Mk7 ST-Line, the Mk8 version sat just below the top-level Vignale trim. It featured bespoke 17-inch alloy wheels and new exterior styling. As part of its body kit upgrade, ST-Line badges have been added across the front and rear bumpers.

The Ford Fiesta ST-Line X was also added to sit above the ST-Line trim on the Mk8 Fiesta. This trim added slightly larger 18-inch alloy wheels, as well as a Quickclear heated windscreen and a rear privacy glass.

Where does the Ford Fiesta ST-Line sit in the range?

The ST itself is a premium offering, known for its high performance and impressive collection of additional features. The ST-Line, while retaining the same sporty drive, is a more economical option, ranking in the mid-range across trim levels. While it doesn’t deliver the top-level performance of an ST, the ST-Line is a step up from the entry-level Fiesta and comes with a wealth of features to enhance comfort and driving experience.

In the Mk7 range, the ST-Line sits above entry-level options, such as the Studio, Style and Style+. But it sits below the top-end ST trim. In the Mk8 range, it sits below the flagship Vignale while offering a higher-spec option when compared to the Trend, Titanium, and Active trims.

What features and equipment does the ST-Line have?

Arriving as a mid-entry trim for the Ford Fiesta, the ST-Line is flush with plenty of the more premium features made available to buyers both in the cabin and beneath the bonnet.

The Mk7 version was made available with three 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engines of varying power, ranging from 99bhp to 138bhp, as well as a single 1.5-litre TDCi diesel. It comes with the same sports seats as the ST, their classy red stitching across the upholstery matched with an equally refined leather steering wheel. Metallic grey alloy wheels add to the sporty aesthetic on the exterior, along with a lip spoiler on the front bumper.

The Mk8 version of the Ford Fiesta ST-Line was launched in 2018. It carries its engine options over from the Mk7 but has changed the transmission to a six-speed manual to add greater control when getting off the mark. The Mk8 ST-Line has also had its suspension tweaked, lowering the ride height by 10mm and incorporating stiffer springs and dampeners.

Inside, it gets plenty of premium treatment too. With either a 6.5-inch or 8.0-inch infotainment system available, the ST-Line’s SYNC3 system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. It also comes packed with the full range of Ford’s excellent safety features including traffic sign recognition, driver alert and auto high beam. These, plus a cruise control system that includes an adjustable speed limiter and intelligent speed assist, cap off a generous mid-entry trim that really does provide many of the Fiesta’s most premium extras.
