What is the Ford Focus ST?

The Ford Focus ST sets the Focus line apart from hot hatch rivals. Combining the iconic practicality and style of the Ford Focus, the ST trim adds pace and power beneath the bonnet and a wide range of premium additions for a high-end, luxurious feel.

A longstanding member of the Focus range, the ST sits at the top end of the trim options. It is a supercharged, sport-centric model that puts performance at the forefront. While the Ford Focus is popular for its reliability, the ST transforms a family-friendly hatchback into a stylish hot hatch with serious curb appeal. Its size and practical features broaden its appeal. It attracts petrolheads and family drivers alike.

Introduced to the Focus family in 2005, the ST trim is one of the primary premium offerings across the Mk2, Mk3 and Mk4 Focus. Marketed as a hot hatch, the Ford Focus ST is available as both three-door and five-door models.

Ford Focus ST history

Ford introduced the first Ford Focus to the UK market in 1998, arriving as a replacement for the Ford Escort. The introduction of the Mk2 in 2004 saw a significant remodelling of the design, marking a new era for Ford’s flagship family car. A year later, Ford introduced the first Focus ST to the range, offering a hot hatch alternative. Also marketed as the XR5 Turbo, this first iteration of the ST trim added a 2.5-litre, five-cylinder engine to the lineup. A 2008 update added a power upgrade kit.

2010 was a crucial moment in the history of the Focus. The launch of the Mk3 brought another fresh body transformation that built upon Ford’s Kinetic Design. By 2012, it was the best-selling car in the world. In the same year, Ford launched the Mk3 ST trim. Differing from the standard Mk3 Focus, the ST came with a larger front grille, a new front bumper and increased power under the bonnet. A facelift in 2015 to the full Focus range saw the ST given its own updates, with the addition of a new 2.0-litre diesel engine.

In 2018, the Ford Focus Mk4 arrived on the market. There were six trims were available, including the ST-Line and the Vignale. A year later, the Mk4 ST joined the lineup. In line with previous versions, it was a premium trim option and focused on performance. Ford’s iconic petrol EcoBoost and diesel EcoBlue engines are both available for the ST trim. The EcoBoost engine features an electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD), making the Focus ST the first front-wheel drive Ford to offer this.

A ’special edition’ version of the Focus ST joined the lineup in 2021. The Ford Focus ST Edition 2021 was a limited-edition model with only 300 cars made for the UK market. . It featured upgraded suspension and lighter alloy wheels for better handling.
