What is the Ford Focus ST-Line?

Launched in 1999, the Ford Focus is an iconic and familiar sight on UK roads. It’s one of the most popular cars with drivers thanks to its style and performance.

Drawing off the existing stylish bodywork of the Ford Focus, the ST- Line adds sporty body work and a subtle redesign of the interior that helps the Ford Focus ST- Line to stand out. Based on the Ford Focus ST, Ford’s performance Focus model, the ST- Line imitates the performance and style of the vehicle.

The Ford Focus ST- Line rivals other performance vehicles on the market including the SEAT Leon FR, Audi A3 S-Line and the Peugeot 308 GT.

Ford Focus ST-Line history

The popular Ford Focus started its life in 1999 when it was launched at the Geneva Motor Show. With a top speed of 124mph and achieving 0 to 62mph in 9.3 seconds, the Focus was a big success in the family hatchback sector, despite coming up against some strong competition from existing cars on the market.

The Mk2 was released in 2004, with the Mk3 following in 2011. A mid-life facelift in 2016 saw the release of the ST-Line as a higher-level trim in the Ford Focus range.

The ST-Line was designed to offer the athletic performance of the top-end RS trim while preserving the practicality of the Focus. For this reason, it comes with a range of high-end features while still offering a select range of petrol and diesel engines. The ST in its name means ‘Sports Technologies’ and reflects its performance-tuned characteristics. When it was added to the trim line-up, the ST-Line replaced the Zetec S range.

The ST-Line comes with a body kit upgrade which adds deeper bumpers and extended side skirts beneath the doors. There is also a large rear spoiler which reflects the trim’s sports-inspired design.

The ST-Line also featured in the Mk4 Ford Focus trim line-up. As with the Mk3, the ST-Line was released with new exterior and interior styling which included signature badging on the front and rear bumpers. Inside the cabin, you will find new, part-leather sport seats that come with a quilted finish. These contrast well with the red precision stitching that runs across the upholstery, multi-function steering wheel and dashboard.

It is available with a 1.0-litre petrol engine which can be configured to produce either 125bhp or 155bhp. The former accelerates from 0-62mph in just over 10.2 seconds while the latter does it in just over 8.4 seconds.

The Mk4 received a facelift in 2021, which added hybrid and mild hybrid engines to the range. This helps push the efficiency of this trim further.

Where does the Ford Focus ST-Line sit n the range?

The Ford Focus ST-Line sits in the middle of the trim level hierarchy for the Ford Focus. Sitting above the entry-level Zetec trim, the ST-Line also sits below the similarly named ST-Line X. The sporty styling and upgrades that the ST-Line trim receives helps it to stand out. The trim offers drivers more performance and styling features than the Zetec trim, while also being an inexpensive alternative to the premium Titanium trim.

In 2019, the ST-Line X was unveiled to sit above the ST-Line. This trim comes with larger 18-inch alloy wheels, new cabin technology, including a 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, and exterior style upgrades. While having many similarities to the ST-Line, the ST-Line X includes as standard a range of features that were only optional on the ST-Line, making it the top-level trim.

What features and equipment does the ST-Line have?

Drivers can expect to find a range of features that help give the car its signature styling and performance. Available with a range of petrol or diesel engines, the Focus ST-Line allows drivers to choose the right engine for them.

The ST-Line trim on the Ford Focus comes with a lower and firmer sports suspension set up that brings out the best performance, with sophisticated handling on corners and on straights. The ST-Line also features 17-inch alloy wheels.

The exterior bodywork of the Focus ST-Line also receives some subtle style changes, including a larger rear spoiler than other trim levels, curved and striking sculpted lines and body-coloured front and rear bumpers. The interior also receives some design changes that help to give it that sporty and upmarket look. These include alloy-finished scuff plates and foot pedals, a dark headliner and a metal finish gearshift knob.
