A supermini-MPV with its emphasis on style and practicality, the Hyundai ix20 debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show and arrived in showrooms later that year. A popular choice for young families and those needing a compact model with extra interior space, it shares a platform with the i20 supermini. Setting it apart from its competition are the model’s efficient petrol and diesel engines, as well as an impressively styled and comfortable cabin that made it exceptionally good value for money.
Hyundai ix20 updates and facelifts
Soon after its arrival, the five-door ix20 gained both popularity and critical acclaim. It received the Auto Express Best Supermini award in 2011, beating rivals such as the Kia Venga – to which it’s closely related – the Honda Jazz and the Nissan Note. Three trims were offered throughout its lifetime, with the first set being named Classic, Active and Style.
The Hyundai ix20 received a mid-life facelift in the spring of 2015. Alongside refreshed styling came a new six-speed automatic gearbox for the 1.6-litre petrol engine, improving its efficiency. The trim levels were also renamed. The entry-level trim was now the SE, with the SE Nav and Premium Nav being the mid-level and flagship trims respectively.
The ix20 was on sale for almost a decade, but remained largely unchanged during that period. Production ceased in 2019, but there are still plenty of models available on the used market.
Practicality and style of the car
The Hyundai ix20’s practicality is one of its main selling points. With its raised seats and low sills, it’s easy to get into. It’s very spacious inside, offering plenty of legroom for all occupants. The high roofline means that even passengers of over six-feet will have enough headroom, and there’s even space for three in the rear.
Despite its compact dimensions – which make parking and manoeuvring simple – it boasts a large 440-litre boot. Not only does this offer more than the 411 litres in the Nissan Note but it is also bigger than the cargo volumes of both the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf, which are larger cars. If you need to carry larger items, the seats fold flat to provide a particularly impressive load space of 1,440 litres. The ix20 is also ideal for towing a small trailer, with a maximum tow-weight of 1,300kg.
Running costs
Occupying groups 7–13 out of 50 for insurance, the Hyundai ix20 is affordable to run – more so than the Honda Jazz, which sits in groups 13–19.
Road tax is inexpensive on 1.6-litre diesel variants produced before 1 April 2017, being just £35 per year due to their low emissions. For models manufactured after that date, road tax is a standard £180 annually.
How a used Hyundai ix20 drives
Two petrol and two diesel engines were available over the course of the Hyundai ix20’s lifespan. The entry-level 1.4-litre petrol option produces 90bhp and is ideal for driving around town. It’s mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and has a 0–62mph time of 12.8 seconds. Stop/Start technology, which cuts the vehicle’s engine while it’s at a standstill, helps to achieve a combined fuel economy of 50.4mpg.
For more power, opt for the 1.6-litre engine, which has an output of 124bhp. This takes you from 0–62mph in 11.5 seconds when paired with the standard six-speed automatic transmission, or in 10.8 seconds with the six-speed manual gearbox, which could be fitted as an option. Efficiency for this engine peaks at 43.6mpg.
Starting off the diesel range is the 90bhp 1.4-litre CRDi. This engine is well-suited to motorway driving, being mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and reaching 62mph from a standstill in 14.4 seconds. Fuel economy is aided by Stop/Start technology, returning an impressive 65.7mpg.
The higher-powered diesel is a 114bhp 1.6-litre CRDi unit, also teamed with a six-speed manual transmission. It accelerates from 0–62mph in 11.4 seconds and despite the extra power, still returns 64.2mpg on the combined cycle.

Features you can expect in a Hyundai ix20
Interior
Leading the Hyundai ix20’s design team was Peter Schreyer, who was responsible for the Audi TT’s looks. As such, the interior of the ix20 is stylish and sophisticated, boasting piano black and silver trim, as well as soft blue backlighting for the instruments. The speakers and upholstery also feature Hyundai’s trademark honeycomb pattern. Air conditioning comes as standard, ensuring the cabin remains at the perfect temperature throughout your drive.
The model offers some clever storage solutions to help keep the cabin tidy. Under-seat bins enable passengers to stow smaller items safely and securely. There’s also a pair of cup holders between the front seats, deep door bins and pockets in the front-seat backs for magazines, tablets and more.
Technology
Early iterations of the Hyundai ix20 provided a six-speaker stereo with AM/FM radio and a CD player as standard. Step up to the mid-tier Active variant and you will get Bluetooth connectivity, reversing sensors and audio controls on the steering wheel. The top-spec Style gained an electrically adjustable, dual-panel panoramic glass roof with tilting and sliding functionality.
When the ix20 was updated in 2015, it received an array of new technology, making it even better value. Automatic headlights were introduced as standard, as well as electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors. Instead of having to upgrade to the mid-level trim to get rear parking sensors, these became available as standard on all variants.
The mid-tier SE Nav trim includes a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This offers access to Bluetooth connectivity, audio functions and sat nav. A reversing camera is also included, making it easier to park and manoeuvre.
Safety
The Hyundai ix20 was tested by industry experts Euro NCAP in 2011 and received a full five-star rating. Adult occupant protection was scored at 89% while child occupant protection scored 85%. These ratings are better than the scores achieved by the Nissan Note, which received four stars and 86% and 82% for adult and child occupant protection respectively.
Like the Kia Venga, to which it’s closely related, the ix20 uses a host of active and passive safety technologies to ensure occupants can travel with peace of mind. Alongside a full set of airbags, ISOFIX anchor points, anti-lock brakes (ABS) and stability control all come as standard. Hillstart Assist Control is also fitted to prevent the car from rolling backwards when you pull away on an incline.
