What is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG?

Luxurious and sporty, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a mid-size vehicle that comes in saloon, estate, coupé and convertible body styles. First arriving in 1993, it built on its predecessor, the 190E, adopting the C-Class moniker and offering a spacious interior and a range of safety features, including airbags as standard.

The C 36 AMG was unveiled the same year, representing Mercedes-Benz and AMG’s first vehicle together. Over 30 years on, the C-Class AMG remains a popular choice among motorists seeking a blend of practicality and performance. Popular with business users, families and petrolheads alike, this is a model that delivers a premium experience and some of the most advanced technology available in a car.

Competing primarily with the BMW M340i and the Audi S5, the C-Class AMG variants – the C 43 and C 63 – stand out thanks to their 18-inch alloy wheels, sporty AMG bumpers and a grille with vertical slats. The C 43 is available in saloon and estate versions, while the C 63 comes in all four body styles: saloon, estate, coupé and convertible. There’s also a C 63 S variant, which delivers the most power and the swiftest acceleration.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG history

AMG was formed in 1967, developing racing cars from regular Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Named for its founders – Aufrecht and Melcher – and the name of Aufrecht’s birthplace, Grossaspach, AMG saw great success on the track, and began working with Daimler-Benz in the late 1980s. A partnership between the two was made official in 1990.

The first vehicle to be developed jointly by Mercedes-Benz and AMG was the C 36 AMG. A performance saloon, it was unveiled at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show and boasted a 3.6-litre engine producing 266bhp and 385Nm of torque. By the autumn of 1997, over 5,200 units had been produced and in 1998 the model was superseded by the first C 43 AMG. This brought an even larger 4.3-litre engine, offering 298bhp and a new five-speed automatic gearbox. The success of the C-Class AMG variants led to other high-performance versions of other models such as the E-Class and S-Class.

It was in 2008 that the C 63 AMG launched in saloon and estate formats. With a potent 6.2-litre V8 engine that developed 451bhp and 600Nm of torque, it could reach 62mph from a standstill in 4.7 seconds. After a facelift in 2011, it was replaced in 2015 by the second-generation edition. This had a downsized 4.0-litre V8 engine with twin turbochargers, and it produced 469bhp. Torque increased, however, delivering a 0-62mph time of 4.1 seconds. An S trim was also introduced, offering up to 503bhp and a 0-62mph time of as little as 3.9 seconds depending on the chosen body style.

In 2016, the C 43 AMG re-emerged, this time with a four-wheel-drive setup and a 3.0-litre V6 engine producing 362bhp and 520Nm of torque. This could take you from 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds in the saloon or 4.9 seconds in the estate.

The trademark Mercedes-Benz AMG innovation was far from over, however. The C 63 AMG was updated in 2018, then in 2022 the C 63 S AMG was given a radical change in the form of a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Named the C 63 S E-Performance, it boasts a 2.0-litre 469bhp engine and a rear-mounted 201bhp electric motor, producing a total output of 671bhp. Developing a staggering 1,020Nm of torque, it takes just 3.4 seconds to reach 62mph.

In 2023, the C 43 AMG was also electrified, but this time with a 48-volt mild hybrid system that added 14bhp to its power output. Further refinements resulted in a total of 402bhp and 500Nm of torque, making the car’s 0-62mph time 4.6 seconds. Today, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG remains at the pinnacle of performance and innovation, delivering ever-more efficient powertrains and exceptional driving dynamics.

Where does the Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG sit in the range?

The AMG variants of the C-Class stand at the top and slightly apart from the rest of the range, representing the peak of sporty performance. All boast more powerful engines than their counterparts, as well as styling cues that demonstrate their racing heritage.

What features and equipment does the C-Class AMG have?

Each of the different AMG C-Class variants boast slightly different equipment. On the C 43 AMG saloon you’ll find 18-inch alloy wheels, AMG bumpers, four exhaust pipes and a boot lid-mounted spoiler. Inside are heated seats upholstered in artificial leather with red contrast stitching, a 10.25-inch MBUX infotainment display with sat nav and a reversing camera, dual-zone climate control and wireless phone charging.

The C63 S boasts 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, flared wheel arches and four exhaust pipes, as well as bolstered AMG sports seats and a bespoke AMG instrument cluster.
