As a safe choice for new and older drivers alike since 1983, the Nissan Micra has stayed true to its core values of safety and value. For new drivers, learners, or anyone seeking a safe, easy-handling car to nip around city streets, the Nissan Micra is a stylish and affordable option that you can rely on.

Nissan Micra updates and facelifts

The Nissan Micra is well known for its affordability, easy handling and impressive standard safety features. The fifth generation of the model was released in 2016 at the Paris Motor Show. All the well-known traits that are loved in the Micra are kept in the Mk8, but this variant incorporates a new, fashionable look to the three or five-door hatchback.

While the fifth generation has similar engineering to its previous generations, it benefits from a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine that makes the Nissan Micra a strong competitor against the best in its supermini class.

Previous models saw petrol, turbocharged petrol and diesel engine options. 2019 saw a more powerful 1.0-litre petrol engine introduced, available with a 5-speed manual or new CVT automatic gearbox. In 2021, a new turbocharged 1.0-litre engine was added to the lineup.

Practicality and style of the car

The Nissan Micra has a practical boot with a 300-litre capacity that will easily carry day-to-day belongings, your weekly shop or luggage for weekends away. If you need extra room, though, fold the rear seats flat for 1,004 litres of space. You will find ISOFIX child seat anchor points on the rear seats so little ones are kept safe.

With a towing capacity of 750kg, you can tow small trailers and lightweight caravans. With the ability to carry bikes and larger belongings on a trailer, the Nissan Micra is surprisingly versatile for a supermini

Running costs

Perfect for cost-conscious drivers, the Nissan Micra is at the lower end of the market to keep on the road, with insurance groups ranging from 1–11. The cheapest to insure is the 1.0-litre petrol engine that sits in group 1E, which can appeal to young drivers in particular. Compared to its rival, the Volkswagen Polo, which starts at insurance group 8, the Nissan Micra is one of the most affordable options on the market.

Road tax varies depending on the vehicle’s age, engine and trim. Older Micras such as the 2006 Initia 1.2 petrol three-door costs £180 per year, while the 2010 Urbis can be as low as £35. Some, such as the Acenta IG-T 90 five-door, are in band A meaning you don’t have to pay road tax. Most post-67 plate Micras cost £180 in annual road tax.

How a used Nissan Micra drives

Previous generations of the Nissan Micra saw three engine types: a 1.0-litre petrol engine with 73bhp, a 0.9-litre turbocharged petrol with 88bhp, and a 1.5 dCi diesel with 88bhp. The turbocharged 0.9-litre petrol offers the best economical contributions alongside quick responses and a forceful feel. This engine, with three cylinders, goes from 0-62mph in 9.9 seconds.

2019 saw the introduction of the 1.0-litre IG-T petrol engine that produces 98bhp, available with a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox. Alongside it was the 1.0-litre DIG-T petrol engine that achieves 115bhp. The newer IG-T 5-speed petrol engine gets from 0-62mph in 11.8 seconds, with the CVT automatic version taking 14 seconds.

This model has a long reputation for easy handling, and nothing has changed with the Active Ride and Active Trace Control electronic systems. With the Active Ride system holding the body firm to the ground, bumps aren’t felt as much, giving the Micra a great advantage against other supermini rides. You’ll stay in a firm line with the Active Trace Control, making you feel at ease and in total control the entire time.

With newer trims, the practical Nissan Micra impresses from the outside, too, with its rear door handles now located in the window frame near the C-Pillars.

With a pleasing and practical interior, a vast array of safety features, and easy handling, the Nissan Micra really does have it all for drivers seeking a more affordable vehicle that doesn’t skimp on the necessities.

Plenty of features throughout its design make this model a great day-to-day vehicle. There is a 10-litre glovebox that fits a 2-litre drinks bottle, alongside 1.5 litres of space in the door bins.
