Red Peugeot 208 from front

Peugeot has a long and respected history for producing hatchback vehicles that offer eye-catching design, great performance, and exceptional value for money. With the introduction of the first Peugeot 208 in 2012, the acclaimed manufacturer increased the appeal of its range even further, building on its 207 predecessor with a model that offered more interior space, a cutting-edge design, and a smart and minimalist i-Cockpit dashboard with its digital instrument cluster and central touchscreen.

Peugeot 208 updates and facelifts

Since this original iteration, Peugeot introduced a Mk2 208 in 2019, this time welcoming a truly revolutionary option to the fold: an all-electric e-208. This innovative variant complemented the existing petrol and diesel engines and went on to win the prestigious ‘European Car of the Year’ award in 2020, with its 51kWh battery subsequently being refined to provide a maximum range of up to 248 miles.

The 208 underwent a facelift at the beginning of 2023, with the most noticeable differences occurring in the headlight design and the incorporation of the new Peugeot logo on the fascia. With new 16 and 17-inch alloy wheel designs, and an updated colour palette, the overall aesthetic is contemporary and refined, setting the model apart from class rivals such as the Vauxhall Corsa and the Renault Clio.

With a selection of trim levels available across the range, as well as a host of petrol, diesel and all-electric engines to choose from, finding the perfect used Peugeot 208 for your needs is simple. Regardless of your preferred powertrain, you can rest assured that eye-catching design, impressive performance, and some of the finest in-car technologies are available.

Practicality and style of the car

Although the Peugeot 208 is classed as a compact hatchback, and the model is in fact shorter in length than its 207 predecessor, there’s no shortage of space and practicality. This is a surprisingly capacious vehicle that has been designed to accommodate five people, with head, shoulder and legroom available in abundance throughout. And, while the rear centre seat may be best suited to a child, smaller adults will find it comfortable on short journeys.

A family-friendly hatchback also requires ample boot space and storage solutions. The 208 confidently delivers both, accommodating everything from the weekly shop to sports gear and luggage for weekend adventures. While the 311-litre boot capacity of the Mk2 model may be somewhat smaller than the likes of the Volkswagen Polo or the Škoda Fabia, the rear seats offer a standard 60/40 split and can be folded forwards in order to free up additional storage. In fact, the maximum volume is an impressive 1,106 litres, meaning the Peugeot 208 comfortably meets most day-to-day requirements.

In terms of towing capacity, you may be surprised to discover that the 208 isn’t lacking in capability. A 1,150kg braked trailer can be safely towed when opting for the petrol edition, while diesel models add an extra 50kg to this figure. It’s worth noting that the e-208 edition is not suited to towing.

Running costs

When it comes to running costs, the Peugeot 208 is certain to impress. Of course, depending on the engine option selected, the fuel economy will vary, with the 1.2litre petrol providing up to 52.3mpg whereas the e-208 can cover 248 miles on a full charge.

In terms of insurance, the model chosen will also dictate cost, meaning the 208 Mk2 falls between insurance groups 12-25 (out of 50), and the e-208 sits between groups 26-28. For road tax, Mk1 models max out at £240 per year, while you’ll find Mk2 trims peak at £180. As you might expect, the all-electric e-208 is free from any tax and will not incur fees when travelling through low-emission zones.

The range of engine options available across all Peugeot 208s since 2012 is extensive. The Mk1 208 provides a 1.2litre PureTech petrol unit, available in 80bhp and 108bhp power outputs, both of which pack plenty of punch without compromising on efficiency. Alternatively, the 1.4litre and 1.6litre four-cylinder engines add improved acceleration and driveability, while in 2013 a turbocharged 1.6litre GTi arrived to deliver 197bhp for those seeking sportier performance. Diesel options include an efficient 1.6litre BlueHDi which ensures the 208 has an option that’s suited to long distance and motorway driving.

Fast-forward to 2019, and Mk2 Peugeot 208s increased the options available, with petrol editions being built around the 1.2litre PureTech three-cylinder engine and coming with various power outputs. Peak fuel efficiency comes via the 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel, which delivers 250Nm of torque and achieves between 71.4-73.6mpg – some of the finest credentials in its class.

The coming of the Mk2 208 also welcomed the arrival of the all-electric e-208. This initial offering featured a 50kWh battery with a range of up to 211 miles, with the 2023 facelift updating this to a 51kWh battery and improving the range to a maximum of 248 miles. It also impresses when it comes to acceleration, going from 0-62mph in as little as 8.1 seconds.

2023 saw the introduction of Peugeot 208 mild-hybrid PureTech engine options – 100bhp and 136bhp – which aim to deliver 15% lower fuel consumption.

Features you can expect in a Peugeot 208

The French flair for design is evident in every edition of the Peugeot 208. Whether outside or in, you can discover contemporary measures that set the model apart from the competition. Plenty of feline-inspired design cues can be found throughout, such as the ‘claw’ headlight signature, which has undergone plenty of revisions over the years.

LED lighting, an updated Peugeot logo, and body-coloured accents have all been incorporated in the 2023 facelift, producing a modern look that builds on the appeal of past 208s. A variety of alloy wheel options are available depending on the trim level selected too, with top-of-the-line GT Premium trims featuring black 17-inch Caesium alloy wheels.

Interior

Stepping inside, the 208 provides a welcoming environment that is surprisingly spacious, with comfortable and supportive seats, quality materials and upholstery, and intuitive driver controls.

Technology

A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system is available as standard, with a 10-inch version being offered on higher specification models. This intuitive system connects seamlessly to your smartphone via Apple CarPlay/Android Auto for streaming and communication services.

One of the major design features of the Mk1 Peugeot 208 was the inclusion of a digital i-Cockpit dashboard, which provided at-a-glance access to key motoring information. With the arrival of the Mk2 model and the all-electric e-208, this has been modernised further, replacing traditional dials with a full digital display on selected models.

Safety

Safety measures and driver assistance technology are plentiful too, leading the Mk1 to achieve a maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. While this has since been downgraded to four stars in the Mk2, the 208 maintains an exceptional 91% adult-occupant protection rating, and a score of 86% for child-occupant protection. With features such as a rearview camera, parking sensors, and automatic parking assist among those available across the range, you can get behind the wheel of a used Peugeot 208 with complete peace of mind.

Trims available on the Peugeot 208

The 208 comes in a choice of trims depending on the trim and year you choose. Four of the key options include:

Peugeot 208 Active Premium+

The entry-level Active Premium+ comes well equipped as standard, providing the 208 with styling features such as 16-inch alloy wheels and a leather-trimmed steering wheel, as well as tech highlights like climate control and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Peugeot 208 Allure Premium+

Opting for the Allure Premium+ trim sees the 208 acquire an upgraded 10-inch colour touchscreen infotainment system with added sat nav. There is also the i-Cockpit 3D instrument panel, a practical reversing camera system for easier parking, and aluminium pedals and sill covers for a more premium finish.

Peugeot 208 GT

Additional sporty prowess is abundant in the GT trim level, with the addition of 17-inch alloy wheels, full LED headlights with intelligent Smartbeam assist, front parking sensors, and Blind Spot Monitoring. Inside, the cabin incorporates ambient lighting with eight colour choices, while the 3D i-Cockpit features a 3D head-up instrument panel that enables you to keep your eyes on the road while monitoring your speed and other key driving data.

Peugeot 208 GT Premium

Topping the line-up of 208 trims, the GT Premium edition incorporates black alloy wheels and includes keyless entry and start, meaning you don’t have to search for your keys to unlock the vehicle. What’s more, there’s adaptive cruise control with stop and go technology, while the upgraded Alcantara and cloth seat trim ensures the utmost comfort on any journey.
