The Toyota RAV4 has long held the title of one of the world’s best-selling SUVs. It first launched in 1994 as a three-door model which used a range of parts from other much-trusted models in Toyota’s line-up such as the Corolla. A few years later, Toyota launched a four-door RAV4. This was the key to unlocking huge growth for the model. And it’s easy to see why the RAV4 has been such a success. A mid-sized SUV that is spacious, reliable, and has a range of engine options available, it’s suitable for those looking for a practical SUV with good engine performance.

Toyota RAV4 updates and facelifts

To ensure the RAV4’s ongoing relevance and popularity, Toyota has continuously adapted the model to meet modern driving needs. The Mk4 RAV4 launched in 2013, adding a range of new technologies and building on the success of the Mk3 model which was larger than its predecessors.

In 2016, the RAV4 received a facelift which added extra technology features such as increased smartphone connectivity for streaming music and making hands-free calls. It was also in 2016 that Toyota launched the full-hybrid version of the RAV4.

Then, in 2019, Toyota redesigned the RAV4 in line with its new design architecture, which focused on enabling better performance while driving as well as improving safety. Featuring deep contours and lower roof and bonnet lines, this latest RAV4 has a bold, rugged stance that says it’s reliably ready for adventure. In 2021, Toyota added a new plug-in hybrid engine that outputs around 302bhp.

Competing against other SUVs such as the Volkswagen Tiguan, Škoda Kodiaq and Hyundai Tucson, the Toyota RAV4 stands out on the road and performs well across all measures. Available with a choice of petrol, diesel or hybrid engines, when you opt for a used Toyota RAV4, you can find the right performance and fuel economy for your needs.

Practicality and style of the car

The RAV4 has always been a hard-working car, especially when it comes to family life. It has a spacious boot size of 580 litres, which can be expanded to 1,189 litres by folding the back seats down. It has a low boot lip and can have an electric tailgate, which both make loading and unloading heavy objects much easier. The boot can also feature storage nets and underfloor storage for keeping loose and valuable items safe and secure.

The towing capacity of the Toyota RAV4 depends on which age and trim you choose. The front-wheel drive versions can tow up to 800kg, whereas the four-wheel drive versions can tow up to 1,650kg. The hybrid engines can tow up 1,500kg, which is plenty for towing a small trailer.

Running costs

A used Toyota RAV4 falls into the mid-range insurance groups, sitting between groups 22 and 36, depending on the trim and engine of the car. The road tax for a Toyota RAV4 is between £170 to £560.

How a used Toyota RAV4 drives

Petrol engines available on the Toyota RAV4 are a 2.0-litre, a 2.2-litre and a 2.5-litre engine. These powertrains can output between 148bhp and 156bhp. The 2.0-litre is available on the Excel, Invincible and Design trims, has a fuel economy of up to 37.2mpg and is available in CVT automatic transmission.

Diesel engines are also available on a used Toyota RAV4. The 2.2-litre diesel engine and the 2.0-litre engine can output 124bhp and 143bhp respectively. Diesel engines on a RAV4 have a fuel economy of between 42.8mpg and 60.1mpg.

Hybrid engines (HEV) are also available, coming in either front- or four-wheel drive. Toyota’s self-charging hybrid uses a 2.5-litre petrol engine combined with an 88kW electric motor, outputting between 215bhp and 219bhp with four-wheel drive versions featuring a second 40kW electric motor allowing it to reach a higher bhp than the front-wheel drive. These engines have a fuel economy of between 50.4mpg and 65.7mpg. Hybrid engines are paired with an automatic CVT transmission, which helps to alter the speed of the wheels to the engine, making acceleration much smoother.

Plug-in petrol (PHEV) engines are also available. These engines have a superior fuel economy of 282.4mpg. Also with a 2.5-litre petrol engine, the plug-in version has a larger battery pack allowing it to go further and output 302bhp.

Features you can expect in a Toyota RAV4

Interior

The interior of a used Toyota RAV4 is furnished with comfortable and durable materials. Passengers will enjoy a pleasant ride with supportive seats and a quiet cabin. The suspension absorbs most road surfaces and in iterations after 2019, the PHEV version has extra noise cancelling equipment, meaning that wind and road noise is kept to a minimum. There is also plenty of legroom and headroom allowing three adults to be comfortably seated in the back.

Located throughout the cabin are plenty of handy storage areas for personal items. The front central armrest has a decent space to store items as well as a small cubby underneath the centre dashboard. The Toyota RAV4 also has a good-sized glovebox as well as two cupholders in the centre of the front seats.

Technology

Other features include LED headlights, keyless entry, a heated steering wheel, and adjustable driver and passenger seats to maximise comfort when in the car. A higher-spec Mk5 Toyota RAV4 features a panoramic rear-view mirror, which uses a camera located on the boot to display a wide-angle view on a digital screen integrated into the mirror, allowing you good visibility behind you when driving and reversing.

Safety

The Toyota RAV4 was awarded a full five-star rating by Euro NCAP. It scored highly across the board, with Euro NCAP giving it 93% for adult occupant protection and 87% for child occupant protection. Most iterations come with a host of safety features including autonomous emergency braking capable of detecting pedestrians both day and night. Blind-spot monitoring is also offered for keeping you aware of your surroundings. Adaptive cruise control adjusts with traffic levels and a lane departure warning system alerts you if you start to drift between lanes.
