What is the Vauxhall Corsa SE?

The Vauxhall Corsa SE is a popular, entry-level supermini within the used car market. It’s a great choice for drivers seeking a reliable city runaround with typically low running costs. It's available in three- and five-door body styles. The SE offers drivers a fuss-free but safe driving experience.

Young drivers, small families and older drivers looking to downsize will feel at home in the Corsa's compact but comfortable cabin. On the streets since 1992, the Vauxhall Corsa is well into its fifth generation and has a range of economical engine options and a strong suite of essential features to offer drivers.

As one of the core Mk5 trims, the Vauxhall Corsa SE is an excellent choice if you're thinking about other used supermini models like the Ford Fiesta Trend, Volkswagen Polo S, or the Peugeot 208 Active Premium.

Vauxhall Corsa SE history

Since its debut in 1992, the Vauxhall Corsa has been a trailblazer in the supermini category. The first-generation Corsa introduced high-spec features at the lower price end of the market. The second generation, known as the Corsa C, added an automatic option. Its 2003 facelift added body-coloured bumpers and other aesthetic touches.

With the release of the third generation, the Corsa became bigger and sportier, featuring a sleeker, angular design. This iteration also offered a larger range of engine options, catering to various driving preferences. In 2014, the fourth generation Corsa added handy Vauxhall OnStar support, plus in-car Wi-Fi for the highest-spec trim. This was also the first time Vauxhall launched the SE trim.

As one of the Mk4's mid-tier trims, the SE featured 16-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, an electrically heated leather steering wheel and a cruise control drive mode.

Vauxhall retained the SE trim with the release of the Mk5 Vauxhall Corsa in 2019. However, unlike in the fourth generation, the SE was the entry-level trim in the fifth generation's trim lineup. An SE Nav trim was also introduced on the Vauxhall Corsa electric models.

Where does the Vauxhall Corsa SE sit in the range?

Until 2021, the SE trim was the entry-level option for the Vauxhall Corsa range. The trim levels were reconfigured for the 2022 model year, with the Design replacing the SE as the basic trim.

It's an excellent option for drivers who want a reliable, well-equipped car like the Corsa at a lower price point. Plenty of useful features, including a built-in navigation system, make the SE a practical choice.

What features and equipment does the Corsa SE have?

The Vauxhall Corsa SE has several safety-focused features that keep you in control. Cruise control helps you stick to speed limits on motorway drives, and the electronic stability programme stops you from skidding in poor weather. There's also hill hold and start to give you extra power and control on inclines. The SE can detect if your attention has wandered and uses the driver drowsiness alert system to warn you. There's also emergency brake assist and a front camera system, which makes it easier to avoid hazards and park without accidental scrapes.

There’s a well-equipped IntelliLink infotainment system operated via a seven-inch touchscreen. You can charge your phone using the USB point, and there’s Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity to sync up your communication, media, and navigation. You also have the option to use the integrated DAB radio to keep you entertained and six speakers for great sound throughout the cabin.

You won't struggle for storage with the Vauxhall Corsa SE, as there are large door pockets and a handy cupholder for both the front and back. The SE lets you change your music, answer calls, and activate cruise control using the wheel's built-in controls. Air conditioning and climate control will keep you at the right temperature year-round.

There are three engine options available with the SE trim. The five-speed manual 1.2-litre engine has 74bhp and uses 118Nm of torque to get from 0-62mph in 12.4 seconds. The 1.2-litre turbo engine has 99bhp and 205Nm of torque and is available with an automatic eight-speed gearbox or a six-speed manual. The automatic gets from 0-62mph in 8.2, while the manual is slightly behind at 9.3 seconds. There's also a 1.5-litre petrol, which zips from 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds using 101bhp and 263Nm of torque.
