The Volvo S90 is a luxury saloon that prioritises quality and safety. With four doors and five spacious seats, the S90 is renowned among Volvo's lineup for being a roomy choice. The Volvo S90 is a streamlined saloon and its elongated body provides ample interior space for occupants.
There are a range of trim levels available, starting with the base-level Momentum and finishing with the flagship Inscription trim. Facing competition from the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Volvo S90 distinguishes itself as a class leader with its unrivalled safety features, comfort and eye-catching design.
Volvo S90 updates and facelifts
The S90 gained widespread approval for its striking design when it was first released in 2015, at the North American International Auto Show. Its stylish reputation was cemented when it won the prestigious Production Car Design of the Year award.
The initial S90 model was produced from 1997 to 1998 and included a four-door saloon version. Between 2016 and 2019 a brand-new iteration of the Volvo S90 debuted. It featured pilot assist and a semi-autonomous driving system that delivered gentle steering assistance to the driver without ever feeling like it was trying to take control.
2019 saw the Volvo S90 receive a facelift — redesigning the front and rear bumpers and lights and adding a new Harman Kardon audio system.
Since the 2019 facelift, the petrol and diesel engines have been discontinued in favour of the plug-in hybrid alternatives, making this era of the Volvo S90 an economically conscientious one.
Practicality and style of the car
The S90’s boot capacity totals 500 litres, which is roughly on a par with the BMW 5 Series’ or Audi A6’s 520 litres, providing ample room to accommodate two large suitcases and hand luggage with ease. Unlike some rivals, the rear seats fold down in a 40/20/40 split configuration as standard with all S90 trims, instead of being an added extra. The boot is also square in shape, allowing maximum use to be made of the available space.
With a towing capacity of up to 2,100kg, the S90 can tow various loads with ease, from trailers and boats to caravans and other heavy equipment.
Running costs
The Volvo S90 falls between insurance groups 27 and 44, which closely matches the rivalling BMW 5 Series, which sits in groups 26 to 45, and the Audi A5 which falls between groups 30 to 42.
The annual road tax for the Volvo S90 is set at £180 for standard petrol and diesel engines, applicable to vehicles with CO2 emissions within the range of 116g/km and 153g/km. S90s with the most powerful engines, or that are much older, can set you back as much as £555 in annual road tax.
How a used Volvo S90 drives
The S90’s standard petrol and diesel varieties are no longer being manufactured, though these engines are still found in many used Volvo S90s available today. Since the 2019 facelift, they have been replaced by plug-in hybrid and electric hybrid powertrains.
The T8 is the S90’s plug-in hybrid engine, available as a 2.0-litre engine. The T8 Twin Engine Hybrid engines have a formidably economic fuel consumption rate of 141mpg. Accelerating from 0 to 62mph in an impressive 5.2 seconds, these engines deliver a maximum top speed of 155mph. They have remarkably low CO2 emissions of just 46g/km. These engines also pack a huge maximum power output of 316bhp and 640Nm of torque.
The T4 and T5 are the S90’s 2.0-litre petrol engine varieties. The T4 S90 petrol engine achieves an impressive 42mpg. Accelerating from 0 to 62mph in 8.7 seconds, this engine reaches a maximum top speed of 131mph. It has a robust power output of 187bhp, with CO2 emissions of 153g/km.
The T5 petrol engine claims an impressive 43mpg while accelerating from 0 to 62mph in just 6.8 seconds. It reaches a top speed of 143mph with its 251bhp power output. It produces CO2 emissions of 149g/km.
The D4 and D5 are the S90’s 2.0-litre diesel engine varieties. The D4 achieves 64mpg and accelerates from 0 to 62mph in only 8.2 seconds. With 187bhp, it reaches a top speed of 143mph while emitting 114g/km of CO2 emissions.
The D5 engine’s fuel efficiency returns 59mpg. It accelerates from 0 to 62mph in just 7.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 149mph. This engine delivers 232bhp, with CO2 emissions at 127g/km.
The S90 comes with automatic, semi-automatic and Geartronic gearboxes. Geartronic is Volvo's automatic transmission system that offers a manual mode, allowing the driver to have more control over gear changes.
