10 December 2024Welcome to our selection of the best electric cars of 2024. We've looked at price, range, battery capacity, performance and boot size to ensure we're using the data available to bring you the best of the best.
Quick facts:
First on our list of the best electric cars of 2024 is the Dacia Spring, which is our pick for best priced. If affordability is what you are looking for in your next electric car, then let us put the Dacia Spring on your radar. Our car reviewer and YouTube presenter Duncan Vincent had this to say about the model:
...this car is going to be a huge hit with city dwellers who are looking for something practical, nimble and efficient to get you around the city.
You get lots of handy driver convenience and safety tech, including front and rear parking sensors, lane-keep assist and automatic wipers and lights. For a new electric car with prices starting around £16,995, you can't argue with value! Lastly, just to add to the appeal, the Spring may be a four-seat model, but it's unassumingly comfortable and spacious inside.
For a small car looking from the outside in, you'd be surprised just how much room you have in the actual driving compartment. The headroom is brilliant, [I'm] six foot two, give or take a few inches, and that's very good for me. Comfortable wheel, comfortable seat and decent for my feet as well.
We love this model, as the price tag makes it an extremely accessible and affordable option for those looking to make the switch to electric on a tighter budget. Dacia is certainly paving the way for EV affordability and accessibility.

The Kia EV9 made our list of the best electric cars of 2024 for many reasons, the main one being the model's extremely impressive battery capacity. It's our top pick if you're looking for electric cars with bags of range.
It's got a 99.8kWh battery and you can charge that from 10%-80% on a 350kW charger in around about 24 minutes... you're looking at 280 miles* of range. Now that depends on the weather conditions and it also depends if you're driving it, like I am, in Sport mode, or if you go into Eco and use the other modes to get a bit more.
A variety of driving modes allow the driver to tailor their driving experience to preserve range or really feel the power. The EV9 GT-Line S will take you from 0-62mph in just 5.3 seconds when you really want it to go. For such a large seven-seater model, that's extremely impressive.
For growing families or those looking for something sophisticated when making the switch to electric, the EV9 could be the perfect model. It charges fast, will get you from A to B fast and it's also well kitted out with heaps of innovative driver convenience features and tech. For us, driving an EV9 is how driving an electric car should be!

The Renault Scenic E-Tech is another fantastic example of what the electric car sector in 2024 has to offer. But don't just take it from us, the Scenic EV was awarded the prestigious title of 'Car of the Year 2024' at the Geneva Motor Show - and we can absolutely understand why.
We've chosen the Techno Long Range version as our top pick for best long-range electric cars. This model can get up to 379 miles* of range on a full charge, so your range anxiety can be a thing of the past. It's an excellent pick for families too, as Duncan Vincent touches on below:
...Renault have created a fabulous family SUV and they've done it in the form of an EV and a really good one at that because it's got the extra range. They've thought about the comfort of the two in the front, the driver and the passenger and then they've really transferred that to the back for the kids...
If this wasn't our top pick for range, it would have been our top pick for families! The Renault Scenic E-Tech offers range, comfort and space for the whole family - what more can you ask from an EV?

That takes us nicely on to our top pick of the best electric family cars, which is the Volvo EX30. The Swedish brand is synonymous with safety, which is why they are always a contender when it comes to family cars.
Our pick is the EX30 SM Extended Long Range Plus. The impressive single motor 200kW battery produces 272bhp and 343Nm of torque. It will go from 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds, thanks to the instant torque delivery that we see in EVs.
The boot, with all five seats in use, offers 318 litres of space, but you can also fold the rear bench down to reveal 1,000 litres. That's enough for the weekly shop, the kid's sports kits or even a set of golf clubs.
You won't get caught out with charging either; depending on road and weather conditions, the EX30 SM Extended Long-Range can get up to 295 miles* of range. When you do need to charge, if you use a rapid charger, you can get over 150 miles in just 25 minutes. That's the perfect amount of time for a break and a coffee after a busy day travelling in style with the family!

On to the fastest EV on our list and our top pick for the best electric sports cars: the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N. Critics are saying this car paves the way for a new and exciting chapter for EVs. Duncan even took it to the track at Knockhill Racing Circuit and it blew him away. This is what he had to say about it:
We seek the things that make us feel alive and keep us interested and that's exactly what Hyundai have done. Because they have managed the impossible, they've put a soul in a machine. And when did I become so profound? Well, thats what happens to you when you drive an 'N' badge car.
The IONIQ 5 N goes from 0-63mph in a staggering 3.4 seconds thanks to its 650bhp and 740Nm instant torque delivery. Not only is it our pick of the best electric sports cars, but it's also one of the fastest cars available in the world right now.
However, the model is still very practical in terms of space. You'll get 480 litres of boot space, which extends to 1,540 litres with the rear bench folded. The model also has five comfortable seats, with two sports bucket seats in the front, all upholstered in Alcantara leather. It truly is a delight!
So, you can be absolutely rest assured that with the IONIQ 5 N, speed and performance won't be an issue, but neither will practicality or style, it's the whole package!

The Škoda Enyaq is an absolutely stunning all-electric SUV and it's our top choice of the best SUV electric cars in the UK currently. This is the brand's first ever electric SUV and it's a fantastic debut into this increasingly crowded market segment.
Everything from the exterior and interior design to the engine performance and handling is truly exceptional; there's nothing that hasn't been thought of. Duncan took it for a road test and these were his thoughts on the model:
...the first impression of driving the Enyaq is that it's a lovely thing to drive around these tight, twisty country roads.
And when you get to a straight, you accelerate, it has got a fair bit of kick, and being in true EV mode, straight away, I've gone into Eco mode to see if I can maximise my battery and my mileage with the regeneration paddles as well. Visibility seems very good here, narrow pillars, I like it...
The Enyaq truly is an all-rounder, it's got an excellent sized boot on offer - 570 litres - which expands to 1,610 litres with the back seats folded away. It's quick off the mark, going from 0-62mph in just 5.5 seconds thanks to its 250kW battery, which produces 340bhp and 545Nm of torque. You also get up to 340 miles* of range.

In terms of the best-looking electric cars, the Cupra Born is in a league of its own. This award-winning model has a striking exterior design, a sophisticated and stylish interior and is kitted out with a whole range of innovative tech.
You're in good hands when you opt for a CUPRA. Initially, CUPRA was the performance arm of the SEAT brand, but now it's its own standalone brand. The Born is a stunning example of the best looking EVs available, and Duncan agreed with that when he took it for a spin:
...from my point of view, I think this is one of the best-looking EV cars on the market. CUPRA have got it absolutely spot on... It's won the What Car? 'Best Small Electric Car' for 2023 and DrivingElectric's 'Best Small Hot Hatch', so it's already an award-winner.
It's nifty, nippy and noticeable out on the roads and that's why we love it. Classed as a hot hatch, opt for the e-Boost V1 variation and the 169kW battery produces 230bhp and 310Nm of torque, taking you from 0-62mph in just 6.6 seconds.
You'll get up to 264 miles* of range on a full charge - and speaking of charging, use a rapid charger and you can charge up over 150 miles in just 24 minutes. It's sleek, sophisticated, stylish but also sturdy and steadfast to drive. It's our best-looking electric car of 2024.

Winner of WhatCar?'s 'Best Electric Estate Car' at the 2024 Car of the Year Awards is the MG5 and that's why it's also our top choice of the best electric estate cars available in the UK now!
The MG5 was the first all-electric estate car in the world. MG truly are pioneers when it comes to EVs. With the MG5, they've created a reliable, spacious and versatile estate car that is a joy to drive. Here's what Duncan had to say when he took it for a test:
Adaptive cruise control and lane assist means that you can just feel the steering wheel just giving you tiny gentle tugs if you stray towards one of the white lines. Now I'm not saying you can take your hands off the steering wheel and let the car drive for you, I'm not saying that... but it feels like you almost can.
The adaptive cruise control as well is brilliant; we're sitting 70 miles per hour, national speed limit, and it's effortlessly doing that, and it accelerates and brakes and goes with the flow of the traffic. Well done MG.
As you can see, you get a lot of driver assistance tech in the MG5, which makes for a more convenient, seamless and safe driving experience. As with most other MG models, the MG5 is also great value for money, with prices starting at just £22,495** from new.

Last, but by no means least, is our top pick for the best luxury electric cars: the BMW i7. Now, the price tag isn't for the faint-hearted, but if you're looking for luxury, then you'll get it right here.
This opulent saloon blends EV performance with a multi-sensory infotainment experience like no other. With an i7, you can look forward to a truly special driving experience every time.
Opt for the XDrive60 M Sport variant and you get a 400kW battery capable of producing 544bhp and 745Nm. This will take you from 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds, so you'll be getting the best of both worlds with your i7: brains and brawn, comfort and performance.
Inside you can expect features that you can't get with other manufacturers, luxury touches like a full-length colour-changing interaction bar, which spans across the dashboard and continues to the door panelling. The interaction bar utilises dynamic lighting effects to create a completely unique cabin and cockpit ambience and experience.
All seats in the i7 come with heating, cooling and massage functionality. Doors come with the ability to be closed and opened via voice command or at the touch of a screen. BMW have created a work of art with the i7, and that's why it's our best luxury electric car in 2024.

Volkswagen's ID. range has been pivotal in the automotive sector since its introduction to market as a concept in 2016. The new Volkswagen ID.7 is on this list for many reasons, but the main one is that it's our top choice for boot space.
Electric cars with big boots can be hard to find, as many models compromise on boot capacity due to needing more space to house the electric battery.
However, the Volkswaen ID.7 Match Pro offers an impressive 605 litres with all five seats in use. Fold the rear bench down and this extends to 1,948 litres. This is definitely the EV to choose if you don't want to compromise on storage space.
However, it's not just the boot that's impressive, the ID.7 also delivers across the board, offering a strong all-round performance to complement its excellent boot space. What's also extremely impressive about the ID.7 is the range available, depending on road and driving conditions, you can get up to 374 miles.* The 210kW battery can produce 286bhp and 544Nm of torque, which will take you from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds.
In our eyes, Volkswagen have smashed it with the ID.7; it's got everything you need: a good range, reliable battery, great performance and a beautifully designed interior and exterior. For us, it's the best for boot space, but for all of the reasons above, it's also our best electric car of 2024 overall.
