Top 10 electric cars with the longest range

In this article, we discuss 10 of the longest-range electric cars available to buy from Arnold Clark

3 September 2024

When we talk about electric cars, one topic that often comes into the conversation is 'range anxiety'. But what does that mean? Well, for drivers, it's the fear that an electric vehicle (EV) won't have enough battery charge to reach an intended destination or charge point, leaving its occupants stranded.

However, as the transition within the automotive industry towards electric continues, battery technology is improving at a quicker rate than ever before. As we'll show, some electric cars now have a range of over 400 miles on a single charge. You’ll also now find more EV charging points than petrol and diesel fuelling stations across the UK. Ultimately, 'range anxiety' is fast becoming a thing of the past.

Did you know we even have our own charging network called Arnold Clark Charge?

So, if you're wondering which electric cars will take you the furthest based on the manufacturer-claimed range, then read on. In our list below we look at the top 10 longest-range electric cars available to buy at Arnold Clark.

To compile this list, we've looked at the range of electric cars based on their Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). This test checks how efficient manufacturers claim their electric vehicles are, though do not always fully reflect real-world driving.

Our top 10 longest-range electric cars

  1. Mercedes-Benz EQS

A black Mercedes-Benz EQS parked in front of greenery

    Electric range (combined): 481 miles*

    Prices can start around: £107,998**

The longest-range electric car on our list is the Mercedes-Benz EQS. Billed as the 'luxury limo of EVs', the Mercedes-Benz EQS stands out from its competitors thanks to its exceptional range, tech and charging capabilities.

Inside the EQS is everything you would expect from this premium German manufacturer. The cabin is futuristic with many innovative tech features, including a 12.3-inch instrument screen, a 17.7-inch central infotainment monitor and a third 12.3-inch display that sits ahead of the front passenger.

There's also no need to worry about space with plenty of room for passengers in both the front and the rear of the cabin. With the 350 and 450+ variants, there's a huge 620-litre boot, extendable to 1,700 litres with the seats folded.

There are three EQS variations with different electric motors. Starting with the base EQS 350, which uses a 96kWh battery that energises a 292hp motor and offers a range of up to 409 miles*. Additionally, there's a larger 118kWh battery for the top two variants - up from 108.4kWh before.

This can be found on the EQS 450+ (with 360hp and up to 481 miles* of range) and the top AWD Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ (with 658hp and up to 378 miles* of range). Our favourite part about the EQS is its ability to drop the air suspension ride height when going above 74mph, which helps to enhance aerodynamic efficiency and increase the driving range.

  2. Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer

    Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer

    Electric range (combined): 425 miles*

    Prices can start around: £56,140**

    Spec: Match Pro S

As the name suggests, the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer is an estate version of the ID.7 hatch. For size reference, the ID.7 Tourer sits in between large electric estates like the BMW i5 Touring and more compact ones like the MG5.

In terms of range, the 77kWh 'Pro' battery version will take the car up to 374 miles.* You can opt for the Match Pro S model, which has a larger 86 kWh battery and an even more impressive range of up to 425 miles*, making it one of the longest-range EVs we currently have in stock.

As with all Volkswagen models, kerb appeal is abundant. Standard ID.7 Tourer exterior features include striking LED headlights and LED taillight clusters, roof rails and stylish diamond-cut 19-inch alloy wheels. Stepping inside, the dash and infotainment system come with a high-definition 15-inch screen and the latest Volkswagen operating system.

Excluding the range, the biggest selling point for us on this car is the load space. There's an impressive 605-litre boot - 73 litres more than an ID.7 hatchback and bigger than you'd find in an MG5 or a Peugeot E-308 SW - and that extends to 1,714 litres with the seats folded down.

  4. Polestar 2

    Silver Polestar 2

    Electric range (combined): 406 miles*

    Prices can start around: £28,998**

    Spec: Long Range Dual Motor

Next on our list of long range electric cars is the Polestar 2. First launched in 2020, Polestar cars are becoming more popular by the day in the UK. The Polestar 2 is an EV hatchback based on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, so you can rest assured this is a safe, secure and sophisticated car.

On the roads, the model has a commanding presence with a distinctive front grille and signature pixel-equipped front and rear lights. The Polestar was introduced to rival the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4.

In terms of infotainment and in-car entertainment needs, you get an 11.5-inch display with a Google Android Automotive OS operating system. Inside, you also get 405 litres of boot space, which is slightly less than offered by the Tesla Model 3.

In 2023, the model was given an update, which included extending the range. The most powerful Polestar 2 is the Long Range Dual Motor unit. Opting for this will get you 476hp and 740Nm of torque. This will take you from 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds, which is on par with the Tesla Model 3, though choosing the most powerful Polestar 2 will see the electric range decrease slightly.

Ultimately, the Polestar 2 is another great model with a long electric car range that is available to buy from Arnold Clark now.

  5. Tesla Model 3

    Blue Tesla Model 3

    Electric range (combined): 360 miles*

    Prices can start around: £26,498**

    Spec: Long Range AWD

We couldn't talk about electric cars with the longest range without including a Tesla on our list. The Tesla Model 3 was launched in the UK in 2019 and was billed as the company's 'most affordable product'. The all-electric car in mual Motor form offered 'industry-leading EV driving range' and was Tesla's first four-door car.

The Tesla Model 3 'Long Range' variant produces 360 miles* on a single charge, however, in 2024, this was given an upgrade, and that figure was extended to 390 miles. * The Tesla Model 3 is also extremely quick off the mark. The electric motor is capable of 351bhp (depending on the power output you choose) which will take you from 0-62mph in just 4.2 seconds, 0.5 seconds faster than the luxury BMW i7.

While the inside is very minimalist, there's a 15-inch central touchscreen, which has all the controls for driving, comfort and infotainment. Tesla models are known for their in-car entertainment features, including video games, 'Caraoke', and fully customisable modes and horn sounds - the Model 3 is no different.

There is also plenty of space throughout the cabin and 425 litres of boot space in the back. 2024 models have a slightly larger boot, extending to 594 litres. Of the Tesla models, the Model 3 is the most affordable, and with such a long range, it really is such good value for money.

  6. BMW i7

    A black BMW i7

    Electric range (combined): 384 miles*

    Prices can start around: £126,998**

    Spec: xDrive60 M-Sport

We're choosing the BMW i7 M-Sport xDrive60 spec as our next contender for longest-range electric car. This exquisitely designed, lavish model offers a range of up to 384 miles* from a 105kWh battery. The i7 also has an output of 540bhp, which will take you from 0-62mph in an eye-watering 4.7 seconds.

The high range figures are achieved thanks to the extremely slim high-voltage battery with a cell height of just 110mm, which is found low down in the vehicle floor. You won't need to worry about charging either. The BMW i7 offers 195kW of DC charging speed at a high-power charging station, which allows 106 miles of range to be added in an impressive ten minutes, while a 10% - 80% charge is possible in 34 minutes. Range anxiety is a thing of the past in an i7.

Although the exterior design split opinion when the i7 launched, there is absolutely no denying that this car truly stands out from the crowd. The iconic kidney grille sits front and centre, while striking split headlights sit on either side of a long and classy bonnet.

For us, the BMW i7 is the pinnacle of luxury, high-end EV saloons; it truly is the most opulent BMW yet. Think 32-inch theatre screen in the back seats, a full-length colour-changing dashboard interaction bar, panoramic sunroof and executive lounge seating. It's for this exact reason that the model has also scooped multiple 'Best Luxury EV' awards. BMW cars don't get much more luxurious than this.

  7. Renault Scenic E-Tech

    Black Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric

    Electric range (combined): 379 miles*

    Prices can start around: £39,405**

    Spec: Techno

The original Renault Scenic was first launched in 1996 and remained on sale until 2022.The car, which got the name from an acronym for 'Safety Concept Embodied in a New Innovative Car', proved very popular, with over 53 million models sold during its production time. The original Renault Scenic is a compact MPV and similar to a Renault Megane family hatch - only with extra space.

Size wise, the brand-new Renault Scenic E-Tech EV is something inbetween people carrier, family hatch and SUV. Renault want the Scenic E-Tech to be 'a new form of family vehicle', so how does it match up to its predecessor?

In terms of looks, you can pick two of six exterior paint choices with a grey or black gloss roof creating a two-tone effect. Those in need of extra storage options will be glad to know that roof rails come as standard. The digital cockpit arrangement pairs a 12.3-inch instrument display with a 12-inch portrait-style Google-driven infotainment monitor for all your in-car entertainment and comfort needs.

220 brake horsepower, 0-62 in 7.9 seconds. Listen, it's not going to pin you to the back of the seat when you compare that to Tesla Model Y, but it's not meant for that, it's meant for a family vehicle, it's meant to get you there safely and with comfort and that's what the Renault does really, really well. The Scenic is top of the range for that.

    - Duncan Vincent, Arnold Clark's YouTube Presenter and Automotive Expert

The Scenic E-Tech Electric uses the same CMF-EV platform as its Megane E-Tech stablemate. The 'Long Range' version of the Scenic E-Tech uses a large 87kWh battery and a 220hp motor. That means you can expect a range of almost 380 miles*, which is around 30% more than the average range of an EV.

When you need to top up the battery, the Scenic E-Tech has rapid charging available that allows you to top up from 15% - 80% in around half an hour. Performance figures see the 'Long Range' version accelerate to 62mph in 8.4 seconds, while its top speed is 105mph. The Renault Scenic E-Tech won 2024 'Car of the Year' and that's another reason why it couldn't be missed from our list of the top 10 longest-range electric cars.

The EQE 350 model's 292hp rear-mounted motor is linked to single-speed transmission, which helps massively with driving experience. The model delivers in terms of range but and it also delivers power. The EQE will reach 62mph from zero in just 6.4 seconds and has a top speed of 130mph.

  9. Kia EV9

    A blue Kia EV9

    Electric range (combined): 349 miles*

    Prices can start around: £62,995**

    Spec: Air

The Kia EV9 made its UK public debut at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, and since then it's gone on to bag several awards. The all-electric model was named 'Family Car of the Year' at the 2023 TopGear.com Awards. The model also achieved double success at the World Car Awards 2024 as the overall winner ('World Car of the Year') and the best electric vehicle ('World Electric Vehicle').

Available as a seven-seater, the Kia EV9 is proving very popular with our customers who are in the market for a long-range electric car. There are three trims on offer. Starting with the rear-wheel drive 'Air' model, and then moving up to the 'GT Line' and the 'GT Line S' trims respectively. The model also featured on our list of the best SUVs of 2024 too. The EV9 may be a big car, but that doesn't take away from the fun of driving it.

A tiny, tiny, little touch on the accelerator pedal - you see that? And away she wants to go, she's jumping, champing at the bit to try and chew up some of those miles ahead of you. But there's a trade-off. Too much fun, too much excitement in Sport mode ultimately takes away a good bit of range.

    - Duncan Vincent, Arnold Clark's YouTube Presenter and Automotive Expert

The Kia EV9 offers a driving range of up to 349 miles, allowing it to charge from 10% - 80% in just 24 minutes from the fastest public chargers. All UK models offer a long-range 99.8kWh battery pack, heat pump and three-row seating layout.

  10. BYD Seal

    A white BYD Seal

    Electric range (combined): 354 miles*

    Prices can start around: £46,292**

    Spec: Design RWD

At number ten on our list of the longest-range electric cars is the BYD Seal. Arnold Clark is BYD's only Scottish retailer; we partnered with the EV manufacturer in 2023. Since then, their models have proved extremely popular with our customers.

There are two variations in the Seal range, the Design and Excellence. Both the Design and Excellence models come with 82kWh batteries, giving you a huge amount of power. In the Design, that translates to a WLTP range of 354 miles. The Excellence all-wheel drive model slightly sacrifices range for speed, but still gives you a very decent 323 miles. As for charging, you'll get 10% - 80% in 37 minutes on a 150kW charger. Not too bad at all, BYD.
