There are now 28,375 public electric vehicle charging devices available in the UK, according to latest Government figures.

Since 1st January 2021, the number of public devices has increased by 37%. Of the total devices available, 5,156 are rapid chargers.

All regions across the UK saw an increase in total charging devices between 1st October 2021 and 1st January 2022. London, meanwhile, had the greatest increase at 16.4%.

The data, provided by the electric vehicle and charging point platform Zap-Map, has been published after it was recently announced that a UK Government scheme that saw eligible EV owners receive grants of up to £350 towards the cost of having a home charger installed is set to change this year.

The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) was introduced in September 2014 and was created to encourage people to make the switch to EVs by offering up to 75% off the cost of home charger installation.

However, from April, the EVHS will no longer be available to homeowners – including those with mortgages – who live in single-unit properties, such as bungalows and detached, semi-detached or terraced housing.

The scheme will remain open to homeowners who live in flats and those in rental accommodation, such as single-use properties.

Meanwhile, for those interested or curious about electric vehicles, Arnold Clark recently opened the Innovation Centre.

The new £5 million site opened last year on Dumbarton Road in Glasgow’s West End with the aim of educating visitors about the benefits of alternative fuel vehicles and why they are becoming so important.

There are more than 40 vehicles on site available to test-drive, from plug-in and self-charging hybrids to fully electric vehicles.
