Sir Arnold Clark was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Car Dealer magazine Used Car Awards this week in central London. Sir Arnold Clark’s hard work to build the company up from nothing more than 60 years ago, to the one of the largest independent car dealer groups in Europe today was rewarded.
Sir Arnold Clark left his position as a motor mechanics instructor with the RAF and was unable to find a job. He bought a Morris Ten Four for £70 and restored it – selling it for a profit, then went on to open the first showroom in Glasgow in 1954. He has overseen company growth for more than 60 years, with 2014 reaching record success. Arnold Clark achieved its most successful year in 2014 with a 12.3% increase in turnover and an increase in unit sales by 7.5% to 249,000.
Previous winners of the Lifetime Achievement award, sponsored by AA Cars, include John Tordoff of JCT600, Ray Sommerville of Perrys and Afzal Kahn.
James Baggott, Managing Director of Car Dealer Magazine: ‘We’d like to offer sincere congratulations on their triumph at this year’s Car Dealer Magazine Used Car Awards. To be a winner in any category is a massive achievement and as the awards continue to grow year on year, the competition becomes more and more intense. The trophy we awarded is thoroughly well deserved and everyone concerned should be incredibly proud of their achievement. Well done.'
