Alfa Romeo Giulia updates and facelifts

The Alfa Romeo Giulia has undergone a few changes since 2016. Most notable is the facelift for 2023, which introduced the exciting 2.9-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine and a new flagship trim, the Quadrifoglio.

Quadrifoglio translates to ‘Four Leaf Clover’ in Italian. You’ll see this represented by an emblem proudly displayed on Quadrifoglio models, inspired by a deep-rooted history in motorsport and worn by many championship-winning Alfa Romeo racing cars.

Pre-2021 there are three engine options: a 2.0-litre petrol engine and two 2.2-litre diesel engines. An update was carried out in 2021, and following this, you will find only two petrol options: the previous 2.0-litre petrol engine and the new 2.9-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

The Quadrifoglio is an impressive trim in the Alfa Romeo Giulia range, but there are three other trims available – the Sprint, Veloce, and Competizione – that come with premium quality entertainment and safety features as standard.

Practicality and style of the car

The Alfa Romeo Giulia provides plenty of space for occupants and their belongings. The 480-litre boot will easily carry luggage and weekly necessities, making this executive saloon a functional one, too. The Giulia has the same boot capacity as the BMW 3 Series but easily surpasses the Jaguar XE’s 410-litre boot space.

While the Jaguar XE is the Giulia’s main competitor regarding its desirable looks, it cannot compete when it comes to interior space and practicality.

Its 1,600kg towing capacity means it’s a perfect companion that will adapt to various needs. The Giulia can tow small to medium-sized caravans and medium-sized trailers. Even larger loads like Jet Skis or multiple bikes can come along for the journey.

Running costs

Costs can be kept within a reasonable range depending on your chosen trim. Insurance starts at group 24 with the entry-level Sprint trim. Insurance groups climb slightly higher as you move through the trim specifications. But if you want to pay reasonable insurance prices without compromising the Giulia’s elegance and flare, the Sprint is a great option.

Much like the insurance, annual road tax costs depend on the engine and year of your used Giulia. The 2018 2.0 Turbo Petrol will cost £180 a year. While newer and more powerful versions like the 2.2 JTDM-2 190 Sprint, will incur £570 per year.

How a used Alfa Romeo Giulia drives

The Alfa Romeo Giulia is known for its clean, high-energy performance on the road. Following its focus on petrol engines in 2021, dropping the previous diesel options, the Giulia is agile and lightweight compared to its rivals with heavy hybrid systems.

The flagship trim, the Quadrifoglio, stands out as excellent in its class regarding power and performance. It’s renowned for its powerful nature compared with others on the market, with its 2.9-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

On models before 2021, you will find one petrol engine and two diesel engines. Both diesel options are 2.2-litre engines with varying bhp. The first diesel has a 178bhp, reaching 62mph in 6.9 seconds. It returns 67mpg, making it a fuel-efficient option and the best of the two diesel engines. The second 2.2-litre diesel engine has 187bhp, returning up to 52mpg and reaching 62mph in 7.0 seconds. The engine has an eight-speed automatic gearbox with 450Nm of torque, making it the more powerful option.

On models pre-2021, you will also find the 2.0-litre petrol engine, which has been carried into the most recent facelift, too. This engine has 197bhp, reaches 62mpg in 6.4 seconds, and returns 47mpg.

Alongside this petrol engine, the 2023 facelift introduced the extremely powerful 2.9-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine. Its eight-speed automatic gearbox and 520bhp means this is an extremely powerful engine. It reaches 62mph in an admirable 3.9 seconds and is an excellent choice for those seeking excitement and luxury.

Features you can expect to find in an Alfa Romeo Giulia

Interior

The Alfa Romeo Giulia’s exterior beauty is carried through into its interior where there is a generous amount of space for four adult passengers and a child. Its sleek, curved edges are mimicked inside with the dashboard and front bucket seats. Leather upholstery is found throughout the interior, alongside high-quality plastics on the dashboard and doors. Its three-spoke leather steering wheel has multifunction controls and a start engine button, making it easy for the driver to operate all systems in the cabin. Some Giulia cars will have paddle shift controls situated behind the steering wheel. They are subtly placed and fit into the overall appearance of the dashboard.

A sleek-designed 8.8-inch infotainment screen is built into the dashboard. The system can be operated via its touchscreen or through the manual buttons on the centre console. As the Giulia has shown already, it’s not just about appearances; it's functional, too. Storage cubbies are found in all four doors, meaning occupants won’t struggle to store their belongings nearby.

Technology

The Alfa Romeo Giulia provides a wide range of standard technology across all its trims. These include a forward collision warning system, low-speed autonomous emergency braking and lane-departure warning. This advanced technology creates a safe environment that helps the driver prevent accidents from happening. Some trims feature adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring to give the driver a little helping hand.

Safety

With all these impressive safety features, alongside front and side head airbags, it's no surprise that the Giulia received five stars from Euro NCAP in 2016. It scored 98% for adult occupants, 81% for child occupants, 69% for pedestrians and 60% for safety assist. Two outer rear-seat ISOFIX child seat anchors are also provided across all trims.
