What is the Audi A1 Sport?

Since its launch in 2010, the Audi A1 has been a widely popular car among petrolheads and drivers seeking a premium, stylish hatchback. Having gone through two iterations, the Mk1 and the Mk2, it has been a mainstay on the hot hatch market. Its Sport trim has remained available across both of its generations, taking the A1’s upmarket interior design and sporty exterior and adding larger wheels and automated driver assist technology.

The Audi A1 is not only popular with buyers, but with experts and critics, too. It was the Sport trim of the Audi A1 that won British What Car? Magazine’s Car of the Year award in 2011, underpinning its reputation as a winning choice for hot hatch buyers. The A1 Sport comes as either a three-door or five-door hatchback, so its appeal extends beyond drivers looking for ample power beneath the bonnet. Its five-door version works well as a downsized family car, while the three-door option is more suited to speedier driving along country lanes or B roads.

Audi A1 Sport history

The Audi A1 arrived onto the market in 2010. A direct rival to the MINI hatch, the A1 was a premium offering from the outset. It packed more power than the MINI, as well as the likes of the Alfa Romeo MiTo. Initially launched as a three-door model, a five-door Sportback option followed two years later, widening the appeal of the A1 to family-orientated drivers as well as thrill-seekers.

The A1 Sport was initially the mid-entry model of three options when the Mk1 was released. With either a 1.4-litre petrol or 1.6-litre diesel engine available, the A1 Sport was an affordable choice that still packed in a raft of impressive features. The SE was a more limited entry-level trim, while the S-Line was the top-of-the-range choice. A 2.0-litre option was soon introduced for the A1 Sport, and this could deliver an impressive 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds.

The A1 Sport Mk1 was on the market until Audi ceased production in 2018. The introduction of the Mk2 came in the same year, and in this new iteration the Sport was the second-most affordable trim level of four. This line up consisted of Technik, Sport, S line and Vorsprung. While the SE came with LED headlights and 15-inch alloys as standard, the Sport increased the wheel size to 16 inches – and added sport seats to increase the luxurious feel inside the cabin.

The Mk1 A1 spent its eight years on the market developing a reputation as the perfect mix of power, compactness and luxury, and the Mk2 continued this. With the five-door Sportback now the sole option, the Mk2 A1 underwent minor body changes and an internal facelift that give it mass kerb appeal.

When Audi ceases production of the Mk2, it will be the last in the A1 line. The manufacturer has announced that when that time comes, the A1 will be discontinued with no successor.

Where does the Audi A1 Sport sit in the range?

On the Audi A1 Mk1, the Sport trim was above the entry-level SE, but below the top-of-the-range S-Line, ranking it as the sole mid-entry trim available. As such, it came with all the benefits of the SE, like Start/Stop technology, a smart pop-up display screen and air conditioning – but added further benefits, like larger 16-inch alloy wheels and twin exhausts.

The Mk2 Sport trim is the second-most affordable trim option out of four. Like its predecessor, it contains all entry-level kit, like an 8.8-inch infotainment screen, but adds extra features like rear parking sensors and Audi Drive Select, an alternative driving mode. Like the Mk1, the Sport trim also increases the wheel size from the 15-inch alloys of the entry-level to 16 inches.

What features and equipment does the Audi A1 Sport have?

The Audi A1 Sport Mk1 was the mid-level trim during its time on the UK market. Available as both a three-door and five-door, the Sport trim was available with two 1.4-litre petrol options, which featured Audi’s Cylinder on Demand (CoD) technology. Alternatively, it was available with a 2.0-litre diesel TDI. Inside, a three-spoke multi-functioning steering wheel ensures a luxury feel as soon as drivers step inside the car.

Audi also added Bluetooth connectivity to the Sport, while the entry-level trim had only an AUX jack input. Two polished exhausts add a sporty feel to the rear of the A1, and front fog lamps were also included with the Sport as standard.

The Mk2 Audi A1 comes with an impressive range of features and equipment also fitted in the entry-level Technik trim. This includes a multifunctional steering wheel and improved 8.8-inch infotainment display. Practicality-wise, it also includes a radar-based hazard spotting system that automatically brakes the car, as well as a lane departure warning system and speed limiter. Optional extras include an Audi Virtual Cockpit feature and Audi Connect route guidance.
