Audi is a premium brand and the Audi A1 continues this legacy, but at the price of a compact urban runaround. The Audi A1 is the most affordable and smallest car available in the Audi range. Launched in November 2011, the first-generation A1 was available in 20 different limited-edition models. It was superseded in 2018, ending its eight-year life cycle.

The second-generation Audi A1 became available to order in June 2018. It shared a platform with the Volkswagen Polo Mk6 and the Mark 5 SEAT Ibiza. The second-generation A1 was only available with one of four petrol engines. Audi has advised that this will be the last A1 produced and will not be renewed once it has ended its life cycle - a perfect time to buy a used Audi A1 before they become discontinued.

Practicality and style of the car

The A1 is the first supermini on the market from Audi, with previous models all being larger. However, despite its size, the A1 doesn’t lose any of the manufacturer's renowned styling and class. It ensures a high level of comfort which is standard from this upmarket brand.

This quite affordable Audi comes equipped with a level of comfort that consumers have come to expect from this upmarket brand. A used Audi A1 offers a choice of two body styles – the standard three-door A1 or the five-door Sportback version.

The prestige small car market is a competitive one with the Audi A1 up against the BMW 1 Series, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the DS 3 to name a few.

How a used Audi A1 drives

This small car delivers impressive fuel economy and a stylish design. It may be the smallest car of the Audi range, but it's packed with a well-equipped interior, and it holds its value well.

The A1’s entry-level engine is a 1.0-litre petrol engine, with a 1.4-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel option available. The 1.4 Audi A1 has an impressive average of 60.1 mpg, while the 1.6 diesel averages at around 75 mpg and is exempt from road tax. Diesel engines are only available in first-generation used Audi A1 models.

Trims available on the Audi A1

The A1 supermini is available in a range of trim levels:

  • A1 SE
  • A1 Technik
  • A1 Sport
  • A1 S Line
  • A1 Citycarver Edition
  • A1 Contrast Edition
  • A1 Black Edition
  • A1 Vorsprung

  • Audi A1 SE

The SE is the entry-level trim of the first-generation A1. It comes equipped with a variety of driving tools depending on the age of the car. The later SE models come fitted with a 6.5-inch display that provides access to the MP3 CD player and DAB radio. It has six speakers in the front and rear, as well as a three-spoke adjustable sports steering wheel. Meanwhile, the power steering and dynamic suspension facilitate a superb driving experience. If you go for the Sportback 5-door option, your car will have electric windows throughout.

    Audi A1 Technik

The A1 Technik is the entry-level trim of the second-generation A1. As expected from Audi, it provides a high spec that you would not find on less premium cars. Fitted with LED lights front and rear and 15-inch, 5-arm alloy wheels, the Technik has great curb appeal. It also comes with an automatic start-stop system, dynamic suspension and power steering. It has a striking matte black radiator grille with front-side air inlets and a front spoiler. You can see why this compact car gets such amazing reviews.

    Audi A1 Sport

The Sport trim has been available across both generations of A1. It comes with a host of tweaks and features to differentiate it from the lower-level trim of the SE/Technik. The Sport features a firmer suspension and sport seats with adjustable lumbar support. The 2022 version of the Sport is full of features like the Audi Drive Select system which has three pre-set modes. These adjust the power steering assistance, engine and gear-shift characteristics of the car. Together with cruise control and rear parking sensors, they allow the driver to enhance and personalise their driving experience.

The A1 Sport also comes fitted with 16-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels - larger than the standard SE. The 195/55 R16 tyres accentuate and set off the cars looks. Plus, the body styling of the matte black and matte aluminium detailing looks superb. The radiator grille and spoiler, rear diffusers, and air inlets provide instant appeal.

    Audi A1 S Line

The S Line picks up where the Sport left off and is a mid-higher-level trim. It has stiffer sports suspension that provides a more exhilarating experience when cornering. It's also fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels with 5-twin spoke design and a diamond cut finish. The S Line comes with the S Line body kit. This includes S Line bumpers and side air inlets frames in a black titanium finish. The front spoiler and rear diffuser clips come in a platinum grey finish.

The body-coloured side sills and S Line roof spoiler give this trim a sportier pedigree. The S Line also boasts a three-spoke leather multi-function steering wheel. This is upholstered with perforated leather grip and contrast stitching. The LED lighting pack includes several convenient lighting options. These include the front footwell lights and inside door handle lights. There are also front and rear roof mounted reading lights available.

    Audi A1 Citycarver

The Citycarver is the A1 version of a small SUV and was an available trim during the first generation of A1s. The Citycarver sits a little higher than the other A1 models. It provides the driver with that SUV feel without the bulk. The Citycarver does feel a little different when cornering due to the extra 5cm of height. However, this doesn’t impact the car’s ability to cut through the hustle of city traffic.

The Citycarver is ideal for young technophiles and is available with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. This enables connectivity and access to day-to-day features, such as on-street parking. Meanwhile, Amazon’s Alexa users will be able to connect to their home from their car with voice commands. They can get that heating on before they arrive home!

    Audi A1 Contrast Edition

The Contrast Edition comes with a contrasting roof line colour. It also has bi-colour 17-inch alloy wheels which provide a striking look. The matching pillars, wing mirrors and rear privacy glass contrast against the black. The Contrast Edition sits above the Sport trim level and has an S Line body kit.

    Audi A1 Black Edition

The Black Edition is one of the A1’s higher trim levels, replacing the S Line Plus trim. It comes with a sport flat-bottomed steering wheel and sport fronts seats - both come in a luxury leather. Meanwhile, it’s 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels have a titanium diamond cut finish. The 225/35 tyres and S Line sport suspension allow for exhilarating cornering. This can be enhanced when using the auto select functionality.

From the exterior, the A1 Black Edition has a distinctive look. The gloss black radiator grille frame and matching black trim exude quality. It also has the equipment to complement this premium Audi styling. The Black Edition has heat-insulated glass on the windscreen and side windows. This ensures visibility and a comfortable driving environment for the driver and passengers.

    Audi A1 Vorsprung

As you would expect from the top trim from Audi, the Vorsprung comes with all the luxuries. For example, it provides heated front seats, dual climate control and a flat-bottomed multifunctional steering wheel. It also offers a premium Bang and Olufsen speaker system and an adaptive suspension. There are a multitude of driving assist sensors, including lane assist and 360-degree sensor parking assist. On the exterior, the car comes with 18-inch twin five spoke alloy wheels and LED lights at the front and rear. The rear windows are tinted for privacy. These features help complete the luxurious tone of this vehicle.
