What is the BMW X5 M Sport?
The BMW X5 M Sport is a mid-to-upper-tier trim on the BMW X5. It was first added to the X5’s lineup with the release of the BMW X5 Mk2 in 2006. Adding to the model’s exceptional practicality, class-leading performance and unmistakable design, the M Sport adds new interior and exterior styling and an efficient new engine that tunes this trim for top-tier performance. This makes it a standout trim for enthusiasts and those looking for a powerful and luxurious car.
The M Sport trim was first launched to reflect the motorsport aspect of BMW’s history. While BMW has always produced performance-orientated models, the M Sport trim was designed to offer much of the same styling and performance without the high costs. Thanks to its design and appeal, the M Sport trim is an excellent option for long distance journeys in ample comfort, as well as for heading off-road.
BMW X5 M Sport history
The M Sport was added to the second generation of the BMW X5. This model was originally launched in 1999 as a mid-size luxury SUV. It shares many of the components of the BMW 5 Series and is a mainstay of its vehicle class. It received a mid-life facelift in 2003, which added new headlights, new exterior colours, a new four-wheel drive system and upgraded engines. It also came with an enlarged front grille and adaptive headlights that respond to the outside conditions.
The Mk2 was released in 2006 and was wider and longer than the Mk1. It added a new infotainment system, LED taillights and drive assists, including lane keep, active dampening and active steering. It received a facelift in 2010 that restyled the front and rear bumpers, air intakes, headlights and taillights, and added new engines and a new transmission system. The M Sport added sport suspension, a new body kit and Nevada leather and electrically adjusted front seats.
The third generation of the BMW X5 came to market in 2013 and was slightly wider and longer than the Mk2. Its body was made from a new ultra-high-tensile steel and featured new front grilles and redesigned front and rear bumpers. The model’s range of engines was also expanded. The M Sport in the Mk3 added 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive M Sport suspension and part-leather front sport seats.
The fourth generation of the BMW X5 was released in 2019. The Mk4 featured new suspension and was longer and wider than the Mk3. It was available with both petrol and diesel engines and could also be powered by a fuel cell. The M Sport trim is available with two petrol and one diesel engine. In the petrol lineup, there is a 3.0-litre engine that generates 335bhp and goes from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds. There is also a 294bhp engine that goes from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds.
The diesel engine is also a 3.0-litre engine and produces 265bhp. It accelerates from 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds. The X5 received a facelift in 2023 that added a new front and rear bumper and a new front grille as well as new wheel designs.
Where does the BMW X5 M Sport sit in the range?
The BMW X5 M Sport sits in the mid-to-upper range of the model’s trim. This means that it is above the xLine but sits below the M50i and M50d lines due to their powerful engines and flagship interiors.
What features and equipment does the X5 M Sport have?
The BMW X5 M Sport strikes a balance between premium styling and top-tier performance. On the outside, you’ll find 20-inch alloy wheels with a high-gloss Shadowline trim. You’ll also find Shadowline trim on the roof rails.
This trim also comes with its own unique front bumper and deep air intakes to help it stand out on the road. There’s also an M Sport aerodynamic styling package that streamlines the sill skirts and modifies the brake ducting – all to give the M Sport a sleeker appearance. Lowered suspension adds to the sporty feel of the drive and signature M Sport brake callipers add unmistakable style on the road.
Inside, you’ll have an upmarket cabin to enjoy. There’s leather upholstery across all seats, with M Sport leather also coating the multifunctional steering wheel. This steering wheel comes with an M Sport badge in the middle. For added styling, there’s Anthracite headlining and an Aluminium Tetragon interior trim. The door sill inlays come with their own M Sport illumination that helps keep the cabin illuminated when driving at night.
Other welcome features include M Sport signature velour mats in the footwells of the two front seats, a signature key and M Sport pedals. There’s also more badging on both the left and right-side panels – all of which adds a premium feel to the cabin.
Your dashboard is furnished with SensaTec leather – an animal-free, stainless material. To help optimise your drive, you will also find handy technology features, including a dynamic stability control system, cornering brake control for safer turning and hill start assist for pulling away up inclines. You will also find plenty of interior ambient lighting and an automatic tailgate system that helps you easily get the boot open while holding bags or other items.
