Stylish, dynamic and luxurious, the DS 9 is an executive saloon car that is capable of competing with the higher-end models in its class. Like the BMW 3 Series or the Mercedes Benz C Class, it stands out on the road as an elegant yet powerful vehicle, with the ultra-modern tech inside to match, but it has a broad appeal that captures the attention of Audi or Lexus buyers, too.
DS sits beneath the Stellantis manufacturing umbrella, alongside the likes of Peugeot, Citroën and Chrysler. It is DS that is the most upmarket of the manufacturer’s car brands. Based upon the same platform as the Peugeot 508, the DS 9 comes with a host of design alterations and high-end interior features that set it apart in a competitive marketplace.
The unique market positioning of the DS 9 means it can compete with both smaller and larger saloon cars. Its spaciousness puts it firmly in the mix as an impressively practical ride, as well as a luxurious one. Packing a punch in its acceleration, you can expect the DS 9 to appeal to car enthusiasts as well as family drivers.
DS 9 updates and facelifts
Originally launched in 2021, the DS 9 came to market with multiple engine options. While there was an entry-level petrol option – a 1.6-litre turbocharged Puretech 225 – a range of hybrid options made up the bulk of initial sales. The initial 2021 option came with two trim levels : the entry-level Performance Line+, and the range topping Rivoli+.
In 2023, the DS 9 was updated to include two new trim levels, Opera and Esprit de Voyage, which sit between the initial two options.
Practicality and style of the car
The DS 9 has an impressive 510 litres of boot space, which notably pips the BMW 3 Series (500 litres) and the Mercedes Benz C Class (490 litres).
The rear seats can fold down to a 60/40 split too, which is a real win when you need more than two passengers, plus the room to pack extra luggage in. There’s additional space below the boot floor if necessary, which opens out to add further capacity to an already spacious trunk. Carpet-lined door bins offer extra storage space, reducing the clutter inside the cabin.
The hybrid options don’t detract from the boot space, which is often the case due to the placement of the engine. More modern, high-end trim options on the DS 9 come with the addition of a powered boot lid too – perfect for when you have your hands full.
Many hybrid cars don’t include towing options, but the DS 9 breaks the mould, further boosting its practicality credentials. With 1,200kg of towing capacity across the range, it’s capable of towing some small and medium caravans, or trailers.
Running costs
The DS 9 can cost between £560 and £570 in road tax. As a premium saloon, it sits in insurance groups 35 to 43 depending on trim and engine level. This is similar to the BMW 3 Series, which sits in groups 24 to 42, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class saloon which occupies groups 33 to 45.
How a used DS 9 drives
The entry-level engine on the DS 9 is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol, similar to that found in the Peugeot 508. With an eight-speed automatic transmission, the DS 9 Puretech 225 can hit 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds and delivers 222bhp.
There are also several hybrid options available. The E-Tense 250 is a 1.6-litre petrol engine linked with an 81kW electric motor and an 11.9kWh battery pack. This can produce 177bhp, and is still powerful off the mark, hitting 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. It can manage 33 miles without the use of the petrol engine. As well as bringing economical numbers to the table, the hybrid options are smooth and quiet on the road even at close to full throttle.
The four-wheel drive option is the pick of the bunch power-wise. The E-Tense 360 uses an extra motor, hitting 198bhp and achieving 0-62mph in just 5.6 seconds. That’s quicker than the Mercedes Benz C300e, another hybrid in the luxury saloon range, which manages 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds.

Features you can expect in a DS 9
Interior
Practical boot space in the DS 9 is complemented by an airy, roomy interior throughout. Electronic seats in the front ensure maximum comfort for drivers, but you can easily fit four adults in the DS 9 with plenty of room for a fifth for shorter journeys. Legroom and headroom are decent despite the car’s sporty, streamlined body design. A range of interior design options are available depending on trim level, from a slick all-black aesthetic to the deep red Nappa leather on higher entry trims.
A 12-inch infotainment system sits on the dashboard in the original 2021 version of the DS 9. While sat nav, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are included as standard, the mirroring technology of the system means the infotainment system can use the apps from your phone, rather than any integrated car systems – a neat touch. On the updated 2023 model of the DS 9, the latest DS IRIS system has been integrated. This adds an ultra-modern interface, including a sat nav that monitors live traffic conditions and locates the nearest charging points for your vehicle.
Technology
As a premium option on the saloon market, the DS 9 packs in a range of helpful and drive-enhancing technology across its range. From entry level, you’ll get DS Active LED Vision, while traffic sign recognition is a great automated assistance inclusion. The DS Drive Assist Package includes lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control, while newer models with the IRIS system features tech that informs you of the weather forecast and upcoming petrol station prices. While the 2021 model does come with parking assist cameras at higher trim levels, the update for 2023 improves on that with a higher resolution 360-degree display.
The DS 9 is an executive vehicle by name and by nature. A combination of reliable grip and Active Scan Suspension ensure a smooth ride across all terrain, while the DS 9 is notably comfortable at high speeds on the motorway.
Safety
The DS 9 received a four-star rating from Euro NCAP. It scored 79% on adult occupant rating, and an impressive 86% for child occupant rating. A wealth of airbags as well as the three ISOFIX seats for securing child seats add to the safety features on the vehicle.
Along with the range of automated driver assist options across the DS 9 range, the additional option of a DS Safety suite adds further impressive peace of mind for occupants. This includes DS Night Vision, which offers an infrared view of the road ahead, and DS Attention Monitoring that notifies drivers of any signs of fatigue when it detects changes in your driving.
Trims available on the DS 9
A premium car even at entry-level, the DS 9 impresses with its wealth of engine options and interior tech features that improve comfort and the overall driving experience.
DS 9 Performance Line+
The DS was originally launched in 2021 with two trim levels, the Performance Line+ and the Rivoli+. The Performance Line is the entry level trim, coming with 19-inch black alloy wheels and a 12.3-inch infotainment system inside. It comes with ambient lighting as standard, complementing the premium feel of the all-black upholstery and materials throughout the cabin.
DS 9 Rivoli+
The top-entry trim for the original 2021 version (and entry-level for the 2023 update), the Rivoli+ trim comes with all the premium options that the DS 9 originally intended. The upholstery is all leather throughout the cabin, and a wealth of safety features – including a 360-degree camera – are included to help drivers navigate tight urban streets.
DS 9 Opera
Included as one of the two new trim options on the 2023 update, Opera aims to improve comfort across all terrain with ‘Active Scan’ suspension. This clever technology uses a camera to scan the road ahead, pre-adjusting the suspension for upcoming bumps and potholes. Also included is DS Attention Monitoring to flag driver tiredness, and the infrared camera for night vision.
DS 9 Esprit de Voyage
Another trim added in the 2023 update, Esprit de Voyage bumps up the premium feel of the DS 9’s interior with Pearl Grey Nappa leather upholstery. It increases wheel size to 20-inch alloys and adds a French touch with a map of Paris ingrained into the central leather console.
