What is the Ford Fiesta ST-3

The Ford Fiesta ST is one of the most dynamic and exciting hot hatches on the market. Capitalising on Ford’s engineering prowess, it delivers exceptional handling, tight body control and punchy performance, making for a thrilling drive. ST stands for ‘Sports Technologies’ and over the years the letters have become synonymous with performance versions of the American brand’s best-selling cars.

In addition to its standout performance, the Fiesta ST offers striking styling and impressive practicality. You’ll find it available in both three and five-door hatchback guises on the used market, meaning it can accommodate young families or those heading out for a day trip with their friends. As such, it rivals the likes of the Peugeot 208 GTI and Volkswagen Polo GTI.

The Fiesta ST-3 is the highest trim level in the ST range, offering a wealth of premium features and state-of-the-art technology. Whether you want the comfort of leather upholstery and heated seats, the convenience of keyless entry or the added control of a limited-slip differential, the ST-3 has it all.

Ford Fiesta ST-3 history

The Ford Fiesta has been around since the mid-1970s, and in that time various performance editions have come and gone – including the celebrated XR2 and XR2i editions. It was in 2005, however, when the first Fiesta ST was launched, that Ford’s hot hatch version of this classic really began to shine.

The original ST-badged model had a 2.0-litre 150bhp petrol engine, making it the most powerful Fiesta to date. Its sculpted styling won instant appeal, and its sharp handling and affordable price tag soon earned it a legion of fans. The next ST came in 2013, boasting 197bhp from a 1.6-litre petrol engine. It was offered in three and five-door format, and trim levels included the ST, ST-2 and ST-3. The ST-3 provided all the latest equipment, from sat nav and cruise control to keyless entry.

The third edition of the Fiesta ST arrived in 2018. With its red ST badging on the honeycomb grille, black bumper inserts, unique alloy wheel design and twin exhaust, it effortlessly stands apart from the second edition. Inside you’ll find bucket-style sports seats, faux carbon fibre trim and a bespoke instrument cluster. Under the bonnet, the 1.6-litre engine is replaced by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with the same 197bhp output as its predecessor. Delivering punchy performance, it takes you from 0-62mph in just 6.5 seconds.

The model received a facelift in 2021. At this point, the ST and ST-2 trims were dropped, leaving the ST-3 as the only option. The level of equipment is impressive, with the trim boasting everything from 18-inch alloy wheels and leather upholstery to the Ford SYNC 3 infotainment system, smartphone integration and a Bang and Olufsen stereo.

As part of the streamlining of the ST lineup, the three-door model ceased production. However, there are plenty of three-door options available on the used market for those who prefer this body style.

Where does the Ford Fiesta ST-3 sit in the range?

The Ford Fiesta ST-3 is the top trim level in the Fiesta ST range. It represents the pinnacle of the manufacturer’s engineering and technological innovation, boasting features that are specified as optional extras on lower trims. Prior to 2021, there were three trims within the ST lineup: the ST, ST-2 and ST-3. Following a facelift in 2021, the lineup was slimmed down, meaning that later versions of the ST only come in the ST-3 trim.

What features and equipment does the Ford Fiesta ST-3 have?

The third edition of the Ford Fiesta ST-3 comes with a host of styling and technological features. The model is distinguished by its unique 18-inch alloy wheels with red brake callipers, its twin tailpipes and black bumper inserts, as well as the iconic red ST badge on the front grille.

Inside, there are leather sports seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, climate control and the Ford SYNC 3 system. This includes an eight-inch touchscreen, DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and sat nav. The ST-3 also boasts a Bang and Olufsen stereo, which delivers premium audio quality. The front seats are heated, as is the steering wheel, and a wireless smartphone charging pad comes as standard.

Technology includes a Quaife limited slip differential for optimum stability and control, and launch control, which reduces wheel spin when you accelerate from a standstill. Manoeuvres are made easier with parking sensors and a rear-view camera offers greater visibility of the area behind the vehicle. To optimise your drive, there are three selectable modes: Normal, Sport and Track. Normal delivers an easy, relaxed drive, Sport makes the throttle more responsive and Track switches off traction control for those seeking a thrilling drive.
