The Polestar 2 was unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and arrived in showrooms in 2020. Originally a performance sub-brand of Volvo, Polestar moved into full vehicle production with the launch of its first electrified model – the Polestar 1 – in 2017. Hot on its heels was the fastback-style Polestar 2. Based on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, it blends the aesthetics of a saloon with five-door hatchback practicality.

The Polestar 2 was intended to compete against the Tesla Model 3. Since its launch, other rivals have entered the market, including the BMW i4, Hyundai IONIQ 6 and Volkswagen ID.7. As a spacious, performance-led premium EV, the Polestar 2 appeals to those who want to enjoy a luxurious experience and more eco-conscious motoring.

The model has received a high level of critical acclaim, winning three Auto Trader awards in 2022, including New Car of the Year. It also received the Red Dot award for design in 2021.

Polestar 2 updates and facelifts

The Polestar 2 underwent a range of updates in 2023. A ‘SmartZone’ grille panel (also found on the Polestar 3 SUV) was added and new electric motors were fitted for improved power and efficiency. The single motor variants also switched from front to rear wheel drive.

Practicality and style of the car

The Polestar 2 may have the looks of a saloon, but its hatchback tailgate gives it the edge over rivals such as the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai IONIQ 6 when it comes to practicality. The wide opening makes loading up the 405-litre boot easy, and there’s plenty of room for a couple of large suitcases. There’s more cargo volume available than in the IONIQ 6 too. With the rear seats folded, capacity increases to an impressive 1,095 cubic litres. That’s considerably more than the Tesla Model 3’s offering of 649 cubic litres.

Handy features in the boot include hooks and tether points, as well as a panel that folds up to divide the boot in half. This prevents fragile items from sliding around too much. There’s also a storage compartment beneath the boot floor, which is ideal for housing cables. In the front trunk, there’s room for a backpack.

The Polestar 2 can accommodate your luggage easily and it’s also a capable car for towing. All variants have a maximum braked capacity of 1,500kg, enabling you to bring along a small to mid-size caravan or a larger trailer.

Running costs

Despite its premium feel, the Polestar 2 is more affordable to insure than some of its rivals. Occupying insurance groups 34-45 out of 50, it boasts lower premiums than the Tesla Model 3 (groups 48-50) and matches the BMW i4 (groups 35-43). The model is also exempt from road tax, the congestion charge and Clean Air Zone charges including ULEZ and LEZ fees.

How a used Polestar 2 drives

The Polestar 2 is available with a choice of two batteries. The entry-level option is a 69kWh unit that powers a single electric motor and is available on the Standard Range variant. With an output of 268bhp and 490Nm of torque, it can take you from 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds and enables you to cover 321 miles on a single charge.

Step up to the Long Range Single Motor variant and you’ll get a 82kWh battery producing 295bhp and the same 490Nm of torque. This reduces the 0-62mph to 6.2 seconds. Editions produced before the 2023 update can travel up to 341 miles, while those made thereafter have an improved range of 406 miles.

The most powerful option is the Long Range Dual Motor unit. The 82kWh battery powers two electric motors with a total output of 416bhp and 740Nm of torque. This accelerates from 0-62mph in just 4.5 seconds while boasting a combined range of 367 miles. Some Dual Motor variants may come with a Performance Pack, which can be specified on new Polestar 2 models. This boosts power to 469bhp and reduces the 0-62mph time to 4.2 seconds. The combined range remains 367 miles.

Opt for the 69kWh battery and it’ll take a 7.4kW home wallbox around ten hours to complete a full recharge. For 82kWh batteries, the 0-100% charge time is 12 hours. At a rapid charging point, a 10-80% top up takes 34 minutes for the 69kWh battery. The 82kWh battery can accommodate ultra-rapid charging, achieving a 10-80% top up in just 28 minutes.

Features and equipment you can expect to find in a Polestar 2

Interior

The first thing you’ll notice about the Polestar 2’s interior is the quality. The cockpit has a minimalist feel and soft-touch surfaces can be found throughout the cabin. The seats are comfortable and supportive too, making even the longest drives feel relaxed. This model will appeal to environmentalists not only thanks to its electric powertrain but also due to its vegan interior. No animal products are used in the cabin, elevating its green credentials further.

Space is generous in the Polestar 2, with front passengers getting plenty of head and legroom. Rear passengers will benefit from ample head and shoulder room, meaning three adults can sit abreast on shorter journeys. For longer trips, the middle seat is better suited to a child or teen. The Polestar 2 also offers good legroom and has space under the front seats for rear occupants to slide their feet. When it comes to cabin storage, there’s a glovebox and deep door bins as well as a cup holder between the front seats.

The Polestar 2’s infotainment system is a highlight. Controlled via an 11.2-inch portrait-orientated touchscreen with clear graphics, it integrates Google. This enables you to use voice commands to operate various functions. Simply say, “Hey Google, set the cabin temperature to 20 degrees” for example, and your command is carried out. Models produced before the 2023 update feature Android Auto, while those made thereafter also have the addition of Apple CarPlay integration.

Technology

The Polestar 2 doesn’t have traditional trim levels. Instead, it offers a standard model with various options for interior colours and fabric, plus a choice of three packs. As such, the technology your used Polestar 2 has depends on the preferences of the original buyer.

Every vehicle gets electric adjustment for the front seats, enabling you to find the optimal position easily. There’s also cruise control and parking sensors to make motorway driving and low-speed manoeuvres simple as well as 19-inch alloy wheels. The front and rear compartments both have two USB-C connectors, enabling all occupants to charge devices on the move.

Safety

The Polestar 2 was tested in 2021 by Euro NCAP and received a full five-star rating. Contributing to its adult and child protection scores of 93% and 89% are eight airbags, including inner side airbags which create a protective cushion around everyone aboard.

Active safety measures include lane keeping assist with steering support and automatic braking. The Pilot Pack adds a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, which warns you of vehicles approaching from your left or right as you’re reversing. Another handy feature is forward collision warning, which identifies collision risks and warns you to brake.
