A crossover that merges style and substance, the Renault Kadjar is an impressive mid-size SUV that is often overlooked. Despite an ever-expanding marketplace for larger vehicles, the quality of the Kadjar holds firm. It offers all the practicality of its competitors and boasts unmistakeable French style. It’s a car that offers lots of curb appeal while providing space and comfort.

Renault Kadjar updates and facelifts

Launched in 2015, the Kadjar has won over the industry with its reliability and clever use of internal space. After a minor facelift in 2018, the Kadjar picked up two Auto Express awards: Best Used Car and Best Used Mid-Size SUV. As one of the most dynamic options in the used SUV market, it remains a hit with buyers – despite Renault discontinuing the model in 2022.

The alliance between Renault and Nissan means the Kadjar is based on the same platform as the Nissan Qashqai. Renault has given the Kadjar its own character with enhanced versatility and spaciousness, but like its competitors retains the option of four-wheel drive capabilities – ensuring it can compete across all terrain. To give it an extra boost on tricky surfaces, the four-wheel drive trims of the Kadjar also come with Renault’s Extended Grip traction control system.

The Kadjar also comes with the same engine types as its closest rival, with both petrol and diesel options available. The Kadjar puts itself front and centre in the SUV crossover marketplace, sitting in a lower price bracket compared to rivals such as the Peugeot 3008 and Nissan Qashqai.

Practicality and style of the car

A tall, spacious car, the Kadjar handles well on the road regardless of the number of passengers or amount of luggage you’re carrying. It fits four adults comfortably, with room for a fifth person in the rear.

Its height makes it perfect for adventures – fit for throwing bags into the spacious boot before heading off for a trip. It boasts a larger boot than the Qashqai, offering 472 litres compared to the Nissan’s 430 litres. Seats down, it also trumps its rival, with the Kadjar capable of holding 1,478 litres compared to the 1,422 litres of the Nissan. The Kadjar also has a retractable load cover on its boot, making large storage easier to deal with than the parcel shelf on the Qashqai.

Thanks to its fine-tuned suspension, the Renault Kadjar feels just at home on tight city streets as it does on winding country roads or on the motorway. This makes it the perfect car, whether it’s for the commute or doing the daily run around.

With a towing capacity of up to 1,500kg across the majority of engines, it’s got the power to tow a caravan or trailer. If you’re looking for that extra bit of muscle, the 1.7-litre, 148bhp engine offers the extra torque needed to manage heavier loads of up to 1,800kg. For optimised pulling power, it’s also the 1.7-litre engine that also offers a 4x4 option.

Running costs

A used Kadjar also ticks the boxes in terms of reasonable running costs. It sits in insurance groups between 14 and 25, so it compares well with other cars in this class. Road tax costs £180 for the majority of trims and engines.

How a used Renault Kadjar drives

The Renault Kadjar is widely known for its efficient petrol and diesel engines. The most economical option is the 1.2-litre petrol engine, delivering 48.7–50.4mpg and offering 128bhp. Two 1.3-litre petrol engines are also available with varied performance: the standard 138bhp version or a more potent, tuned-up option offering 157bhp.

Diesel options are economical, too, returning between 56.5 to 74.3mpg depending on the engine. The entry-level 1.5-litre engine of the 2018 model offers 113bhp, while the 1.7-litre delivers 147bhp – its front-wheel drive option the more economical of the two, while the four-wheel drive adds extra power.

The Renault Kadjar offers a smooth ride. It offers decent torque across its full range of engines. This means it can tackle steep hills with ease. With automatic or manual transmission options, the perfect used Kadjar is out there to suit your way of driving.

Features you can expect in a Renault Kadjar

Interior

Offering comfort and style, a used Renault Kadjar is generous on height for a crossover SUV. The model also offers decent boot space and legroom. Step inside the cabin and you can expect a neat and compact space throughout – with the added digital instrument cluster offering the techy touches that heighten its appeal.

Technology

All trims above the entry-level are equipped with its R-Link 2 touchscreen infotainment system. The intuitive seven-inch colour instrument screen in the centre console offers everything from sat nav to weather and email apps. The 2018 facelift, meanwhile, has given the look and feel of the interior an extra sprucing up. The touchscreen sits flush in the dash, rather than set back with the pre-facelift model, and the addition of stylish backlit switches has provided a subtle but effective aesthetic upgrade.

More advanced trim levels of the Kadjar offer extra perks for the driver. The higher trim-level 2016 model offers parking sensors, the updated 2018 Dynamique SE adds a rear parking camera for more confident parking in tight spaces.

Safety

The Kadjar has been awarded the full five stars for safety by Euro NCAP. Its adult and child-occupant protection also demonstrate the widely respected safety credentials of a used Kadjar: adult occupant protection is 89%, while child occupant protection was given a score of 81%. The Kadjar also received a safety-assist score of 71%.

With two sets of ISOFIX points in the rear, attaching child seats is easy. And as the Renault Kadjar offers a quiet ride, the kids will remain asleep even when you need to put your foot down.
