What is the SEAT Leon Cupra
The SEAT Leon Cupra is a sporty, high-performance hot hatchback that’s also practical. Launched in 2001, the Leon Cupra has made a name for itself on the hot hatchback market because of its style and performance; this has made it popular with petrolheads and families alike.
Standing for ‘cup racing’, the Leon Cupra symbolises the high-quality driving experience that the car provides. The Cupra name has become synonymous with performance. Rivalling other hot hatches such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the Honda Civic Type R and the Audi A3 Sportback, the SEAT Leon Cupra contends with premium models while offering relatively low running costs.
SEAT Leon Cupra history
The Mk1 SEAT Leon Cupra was launched in 2001 after the SEAT Leon was released two years earlier in 1999. Receiving a subtle design change to set it apart from the SEAT Leon, the Cupra features a lower front grille split in three and a rear spoiler at the top of the tailgate. With a choice of a 1.9-litre diesel or a 2.8-litre petrol engine, the Mk1 SEAT Leon Cupra had a top speed of 147mph and could achieve 0 to 62mph in 7.3 seconds.
The Mk2 was launched in 2006 and got a more streamlined exterior body kit and a more powerful 2.0-litre petrol engine, allowing it to reach a top speed of 152mph and achieve 0 to 62mph in 6.4 seconds. Inside the Cupra received some styling changes which featured sports seats with SEAT Leon Cupra branding and some extra dials to help give the interior that sporty feel.
In 2013, the Mk3 was launched just before SEAT used the car to launch Cupra as a brand in its own right. Sharing a similar platform with the Volkswagen Golf, the SEAT Leon Cupra was now available in two versions: a three-door and a five-door. Available with a range of turbocharged petrol engines, the Mk3 can achieve 0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph.
Where does the SEAT Leon Cupra sit in the range?
The SEAT Leon Cupra sits above the SEAT Leon and below the limited-edition SEAT Leon Cupra R, which is the flagship model for the SEAT Leon. Coming with plenty of technology and kit, the Leon Cupra offers drivers high-quality onboard entertainment as well as other features which help to assist the driver on the roads.
What features and equipment does the SEAT Leon Cupra have?
From the interior to the exterior, the Leon Cupra comes with high-quality finishes and technology that help to make it a popular car with a premium feel. This feel is reflected in the interior design, which features sports seats in the front upholstered with microsuede, black roof lining, aluminium pedals and a flat-bottomed steering wheel.
The SEAT Leon features a good suspension setup that allows drivers to match the suspension to the driving performance of the car. Not only does this help to make the car feel sporty but also makes driving the Leon Cupra comfortable. The inside is furnished with high-quality materials that give the cabin a premium look and feel, improving the style and comfort of the cabin.
The infotainment system, installed on the Mk3, comes with plenty of smartphone connectivity, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and makes use of SEAT's Full Link system, which is intuitive and easy to use. It is also through this system that drivers can use the Cupra Drive Profile, which links to the adjustable suspension on the vehicle. This helps to keep the driving experience enjoyable and comfort levels high, pairing well with the powerful engines that are available. The Cupra also comes with dual-zone climate control, which also helps to keep the cabin comfortable all year round.
To help achieve its sporty look, SEAT has included a range of exterior features that help to set it apart from standard SEAT Leons. Cupra branded front grille and brake callipers, as well as a unique front bumper and grille design.
SEAT has made sure to equip the Leon Cupra with helpful technology and features to help assist the driver on the roads. In addition to the adjustable suspension, the Cupra comes with adaptive cruise control, all-round parking sensors, automatic LED headlights and automatic wipers. The SEAT Leon Cupra is a high-performing hatchback that delivers both style and practicality well.
