What is the Vauxhall Corsa Griffin?

One of the UK’s most consistently popular superminis, and Vauxhall’s best-selling models, the Vauxhall Corsa remains an economical stalwart for young drivers and those who need a compact car with low running costs.

The Vauxhall Corsa Griffin model variant was released as a limited-edition option in 2018, designed to sit above the standard range of trims. It comes as a three- and five-door supermini, with post-2019, Mk5 models only available as five doors.

If you’re in the market for a car like the Ford Fiesta Vignale, Renault Clio Iconic Nav or the Volkswagen Polo GTI, the Vauxhall Corsa Griffin is a superb alternative.

Vauxhall Corsa Griffin history

First hitting the UK’s roads in 1992, the Vauxhall Corsa’s first generation shook up the supermini category by offering high-spec features at an economical price. Mk2, known as the Corsa C, was released in 2000 with its first automatic option, and received a facelift in 2003 to add body-coloured bumpers.

Mk3 was bigger and had a sleeker, angular look, with a wider range of engine options. Design-wise, this generation sharped the Corsa’s rounded look and made it sportier and more contemporary. Mk4 came along in 2014, introducing Vauxhall OnStar support and in-car Wi-Fi for its flagship trim. Mk5 represented perhaps the biggest change to the model yet, with the Corsa becoming five-door only and adding all-electric options to the range.

The Vauxhall Corsa Griffin was first released as a limited edition in 2018 to mark 25 years of the Corsa model. It proved so popular that the Griffin trim was carried across to other Vauxhall models and released for two more limited edition runs in 2019 and 2021.

There are five core engine options available with the Griffin. The 1.5-litre turbo diesel has a six-speed automatic gearbox. Using its 101bhp, it gets from 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds. There's also a start/stop 1.5-litre diesel engine, which has 101bhp and 250Nm of torque, taking it up to 62mph in 9.6 seconds.

There are three versions of the 1.2-litre petrol start/stop Griffin, which has a fuel-conserving engine that temporarily turns off when you’re not moving. The automatic has an eight-speed gearbox, 99bhp and gets from 0-62mph in 10.2 seconds. The manual has a five-speed gearbox, which uses the same 99bhp to get from 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds. There's also a less powerful option, which has 74bhp and gets from 0-62mph in 12.4 seconds.

Where does the Vauxhall Corsa Griffin sit in the range?

Designed as an executive option for a number of Vauxhall models, the Griffin (also known as the Griffin Edition) is a limited-edition, high spec offering for the Corsa. It's also offered across the Astra, Adam, Mokka X and Grandland X models too. As it’s a limited edition, the Griffin sits outside the Corsa’s standard trim levels and has lots of extra features and design touches to set it apart.

What features and equipment does the Vauxhall Corsa Griffin have?

The Vauxhall Corsa Griffin has smart, aesthetic touches like all-black 16-inch alloys. There are Griffin badges throughout, everywhere from the doors to the floor mats, and upmarket touches like dark privacy glass for the rear windows. It's also practical, with auto stop/start wipers and a heated windscreen to keep the elements at bay. Whether you choose the three- or five-door option, you’ll enjoy the same features.

The cabin feels premium and has lots of features that improve driver and passenger comfort. Its front sports-style seats are heated, and to make cold days even cosier, the leather steering wheel is heated too. There's also air conditioning to keep you cool. Practical additions like the LED daytime running lights and the anti-dazzle rear-view mirror make sure you’re seen and prevent other drivers impacting your concentration.

When it comes to entertainment and navigation, the seven-inch IntelliLink infotainment system has ample features. It's touchscreen for ease of use and has USB, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Your phone’s display can be mirrored to the colour screen, so you can control music, safely make calls and use maps to get to your destination. If you don’t have a smartphone, you can also use the integrated European sat nav system to find your way across the UK and Europe.

Safety is considered with the Griffin. There’s cruise control to keep you at a set speed on long drives, hill start assist to help you get going on inclines and handy ISOFIX child seat points in the rear.
