What is the Vauxhall Corsa SRi?

The Vauxhall Corsa has long been one of the most popular and best-selling hatchback models on UK roads. In its acclaimed Vauxhall Corsa SRi guise, the model has a sportier edge (the moniker stands for Sport Refinement injection) providing an extra kick in performance and improved aesthetics. First introduced to the Corsa trim selection in the second-generation lineup, the SRi edition really took on broader appeal with its re-introduction in 2007. The model has since become a staple choice for those wanting value and performance in their supermini.

Like all Corsa models, the SRi is defined by its compact dimensions. This diminutive stature lends itself to agile handling and responsive performance, particularly in urban environments and tight city streets. The model, which is available in three and five-door iterations, also boasts impressive levels of practicality. For instance, depending on the model you choose, you can expect up to 285 litres of boot space, which expands to 1,100 litres with the rear seats folded. The result is one of the roomiest options in the supermini class.

In terms of competition, the Corsa SRi holds its own against rivals like the Ford Fiesta ST Line, the SEAT Ibiza FR and the Volkswagen Polo R-Line. Moreover, its sporty design and comprehensive standard equipment list make it an appealing option for those looking for a car that offers both style and substance.

Vauxhall Corsa SRi history

The first Corsa – previously known as the Nova – came to the UK market over three decades ago, and has become synonymous with the Vauxhall range. As a compact supermini, it appealed to those living in urban environments, providing an easy way to get through crowded streets. The Mk2 arrived in 2000, with the Mk3 following in 2006 and marking a separation in design between the three-door and five-door variants.

Alongside this change came the introduction of the SRi variant. It offered a sportier, more performance-orientated option, bridging the gap between the standard Corsa models and the high-performance VXR variant. It was available with a 128bhp 1.7-litre diesel engine. By the time the Mk4 Corsa launched in 2014, the SRi was a staple of the lineup, sitting at the higher end of the extensive range. Two engine options were available for it: a 98bhp 1.4-litre petrol and a 128bhp 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol unit.

The Mk5 Vauxhall Corsa went on sale in 2019, with the SRi trim continuing to be offered. Its petrol engine option is a 1.2-litre unit with outputs of either 99bhp or 128bhp and mated to six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. These take you from 0-62mph in 9.3 and 8.2 seconds respectively. The diesel engine is a 1.5-litre 101bhp unit that reaches 62mph from a standstill in 9.6 seconds.

Where does the Vauxhall Corsa SRi sit in the range?

The SRi trim is widely considered the perfect blend of sportiness and practicality, sitting just below the high-performance VXR in the Corsa range. As such it is more dynamic than the standard models but without the higher running costs of the VXR.

What features and equipment does the Vauxhall Corsa SRi have?

The Vauxhall Corsa SRi is one of the more generously equipped trims in the range. It features a sports body kit, 17-inch alloy wheels, black headlamp housings and tinted windows, giving it a distinct, aggressive look. It also comes with sports suspension to enhance its dynamic handling. Inside there are sports seats to add a touch of style and comfort, a leather, multifunction steering wheel and air conditioning. The boot of the Mk5 edition provides an impressive 309 litres of luggage capacity.

As you would expect, the precise lineup of features varies from generation to generation. However, Corsa SRi variants from 2014 onwards offer cruise control to help ease long-distance driving and electric mirrors that are also heated for added convenience in cold and wet weather. In addition, parking sensors make manoeuvring in tight spaces much easier. From 2021, SRi trims specified with the 1.2-litre 128bhp engine and automatic transmission come with Normal, Eco and Sport modes to further enhance your drive.

When it comes to safety, the Vauxhall Corsa SRi is well equipped to provide peace of mind. Euro NCAP awarded the vehicle four stars in 2019 as well as adult and child occupancy ratings of 84% and 86% respectively. The car features 3x3 point rear seat belts and ISOFIX child seat anchor points, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and traction control, enhancing the vehicle's stability and control. The Corsa SRi is also fitted with multiple airbags.
