What is the Volkswagen Polo GTI?
Launched in 2005, the Volkswagen Polo GTI hot hatchback is a stylish car that has refined performance. Built with a similar mindset as the other Volkswagen GTI models, the Polo GTI offers drivers a great combination of performance, style and practicality, making the car attractive to both commuters and families as well as hot-hatch enthusiasts. The lightweight structure of the Polo GTI gives it a race-like feel, adding to the appeal and fun of the driving experience. The GTI is available in either a five-door or three-door version.
The Volkswagen Polo GTI competes well in the hot hatchback market, rivalling the Ford Fiesta ST, the MINI Cooper S and the Hyundai i20 N. The car’s practicality and efficiency help the model stand out in the market and be a popular car with drivers.
Volkswagen Polo GTI History
The Volkswagen Polo has evolved over the years since it launched in 1975. The Mk2 was introduced in 1981. In 1994, the Mk3 was launched with a new platform and a range of petrol engines that gave the Polo a top speed of 116mph and a 0 to 62mph of 10.5 seconds.
In 2001, Volkswagen introduced the Mk4 Volkswagen Polo. It had received some subtle design changes to the front bumper to make the car look more friendly with round headlights. The Mk4 received a facelift in 2005; Volkswagen replaced the round headlights with more angular-shaped headlights along with other tweaks such as a new front grille design. The Mk4 had a top speed of 128mph and achieved 0 to 62mph in 9.2 seconds with the 1.9-litre TDI diesel engine.
It was with the 2005 facelift that Volkswagen introduced the Polo GTI. The Volkswagen Polo GTI was designed to be a sportier Polo, both in performance and looks. A new V-shaped front grille adorned the front of the car, giving it a striking look on the road. At launch, it was only available with a 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine that gave it a top speed of 134mph which could achieve 0 to 62mph in 8.2 seconds. Being 1.7 seconds quicker than the standard Polo, the Polo GTI appealed to hot hatchback enthusiasts.
By 2010, Volkswagen had launched the Mk5 Polo as well as a second generation of the Polo GTI. By reducing the overall dimensions of the car and limiting the engine choice to a 1.4-litre petrol engine Volkswagen made the Polo GTI more affordable. The car’s sporty appearance was enhanced by the addition of a rear roof spoiler and a dual exhaust system. With a top speed of 142mph and able to achieve 0 to 62mph in 6.9 seconds, the Volkswagen Polo GTI was a truly sporty hot hatchback.
2014 saw the Volkswagen Polo range receive a facelift. A new athletic look was given to the Polo with some subtle changes being made to the exterior, including a honeycomb front grille where the GTI chrome badge was located.
The Mk3 Polo GTI followed the launch of the Mk7 Volkswagen Polo in 2017. The bodywork received some tweaks to help make it distinct from the rest of the Polo range. A red stripe on the front grille as well as some small winglets in the rear of the car gave the Mk3 Polo GTI a recognisably sporty look. Inside, body hugging sports seats provided good amounts of support and comfort as well as helping to mirror the performance aesthetic of the car's exterior. A 6.5-inch infotainment screen with smartphone connectivity was also added giving the Polo GTI good onboard entertainment.
The Mk3 Polo GTI came with a 2.0-litre petrol engine that had a top speed of 147mph and achieved 0 to 62mph in 6.7 seconds.
In 2021, the Mk4 Volkswagen Polo was introduced, upgrading interior and exterior technology to enhance the performance and attractiveness of the car to modern drivers. This gave the interior of the GTI an upmarket feel – such as the addition of a new audio system. Improvements were also made in its performance. A lower sports chassis gives the car a more aerodynamic stance on the road. Volkswagen also include some semi-autonomous driving technology as part of its IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist system.
Where does the Volkswagen Polo GTI sit in the range?
The Volkswagen Polo GTI sits at the top of the range for the Polo model. While separate from the trim levels available on the Volkswagen Polo, the Polo GTI stands as a performance car.
With increased efficiency and a more athletic design than the standard Polo, the Polo GTI offers drivers a good balance between a sporty car and a practical one for everyday travel.
What features and equipment does the Polo GTI have?
The Volkswagen Polo GTI comes with a range of technology that helps place it at the top of the Polo range. Step inside, and drivers will find high-quality finishes and materials on the sports seats and dashboard including the iconic tartan seat cloth upholstery, sports steering wheel with red stitching detailing and plenty of soft-touch plastics. Ambient lighting in the interior helps to enhance the look of the cabin, while the black headliner helps to further enhance the car’s sporty look.
In the cabin, drivers will find Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit instrument display as well as dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and a reversing camera. Wireless phone charging also comes with the Polo GTI.
The Volkswagen Polo GTI comes with a range of driver assist features including adaptive cruise control, automatic city braking and lane-keep assist.
