Volkswagen overview
The Volkswagen Group was created by the German Government in 1937 with the intention of making driving a car more accessible and affordable to the public. Volkswagen in German means “the people’s car”. Something which has remained at the heart of the brand all these years later.
Volkswagens were not mass-produced until 1946. It was then that VW models were rolled out at such a pace that within three years more than 50% of passenger cars produced in Germany were Volkswagen. Since, Volkswagen has produced and manufactured some of the most iconic cars on our roads. The Group’s headquarters remain in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany.
Popular Volkswagen models
One of the most well-known and loved models in the range is the VW Beetle, famously introduced in 1938, and officially as the Volkswagen Beetle Type 1. This model was manufactured in 1938 and continued to be produced and sold until 2003. This model was named as the “fourth most influential car of the 20th century” in the 1999 ‘Car of the Century’ competition. New versions of the model were introduced in 1997 and 2011 respectively. VW stopped producing the Beetle in 2019 – the end of an era.
Arnold Clark has a vast variety of used Volkswagen cars available. The fun and diverse VW Up! is the perfect city car for those living a busy city life. Or the VW Golf which is a great option for those looking for a premium yet practical hatchback.
The best-selling VW Passat is another great choice for those in the market for a stylish and sophisticated saloon. The VW Passat estate version is also available for those needing a little more space or opt for a Volkswagen SUV with the Tiguan or Touareg. Volkswagen also has performance-focused models such as their esteemed hot-hatches: the Golf R and Golf GTI.
Manufacturer awards
Volkswagen has scooped up numerous manufacturer awards for their automotive engineering excellence. In 2009, the Golf was named ‘World Car of the Year’, followed by the Polo in 2010. In 2012 it was the VW Up! which gained the same prestigious award, then back to the Golf for 2013. In 2021, it was the Volkswagen ID.4 that proved itself as ‘World Car of the Year’.
The Volkswagen Group also continues to be at the forefront of innovation and electric vehicle technology. The Volkswagen Group UK was named ‘OEM of the Year’ at the EVIE awards (Electric Vehicles Innovation & Excellence Awards) in recognition of their industry-leading commitments to e-mobility.
VW used cars are still some of the most sought-after and loved cars in the UK marketplace. Volkswagen continues to offer drivers affordability, accessibility, quality and performance.
