What is the VW T-Roc R-Line?

The Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line was introduced in late 2018, providing a top-of-the-range option for those looking for a sportier look and feel to their compact SUV. With its modest dimensions, the T-Roc is better suited to city and suburban life than its larger siblings, the Tiguan and Touareg.

It’s a practical and spacious vehicle, offering a boot space of 445-1,532 litres and plenty of headroom for tall adults. As such, it suits a wide range of motorists, from young drivers with an active lifestyle to families in need of a compact, durable and versatile vehicle.

As a top-spec trim, the T-Roc R-Line has a wealth of exclusive equipment, including R-Line design body-coloured bumpers, distinctive 17-inch alloy wheels and a driving profile selection. Its primary competition comes from models such as the Audi Q2 and Q3, the BMW X2, as well as top-spec variants of the Mazda CX-5 and the SEAT Ateca.

VW T-Roc R-Line history

Volkswagen has enjoyed success with its SUV range for two decades, so when the T-Roc was launched in 2017 it was bound to be popular. The T-Roc R-Line appeals to young drivers and urbanites in particular, while also providing the necessary practicality for families. With its minimalist design, driver-oriented cabin and array of engine options, it meets a wide range of needs.

The T-Roc was initially offered with three petrol engines, starting with the 114bhp 1.0-litre TSI and rounding off with a 187bhp 2.0-litre TSI. Three trims were available at launch: SE, Design and SEL. These were joined by an entry-level S grade in December 2017, alongside a 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine option. In August 2018 a 114bhp 1.6-litre diesel was added – and four months later the R-Line trim was introduced.

The R-Line is available with 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol or 2.0-litre diesel engines, most of which come with seven-speed automatic transmission as standard. Whichever you choose, this trim will get you from 0-62mph in under 10.5 seconds. It also boasts sports suspension for a more controlled and sportier ride. Selectable drive modes enable you to adjust the throttle, steering and other settings too, tailoring your experience to suit your preferences and the road conditions.

Where does the VW T-Roc site in the range?

The Volkswagen T-Roc provides a compact alternative to the larger Tiguan and Touareg. The R-Line trim arrived in 2018 and sits at the top of the T-Roc range.

Boasting distinctive styling elements and exclusive equipment features, it brings a high level of sportiness to the model, but without the associated costs of the R variant. The engines available are, for the most part, the same as those in the rest of the lineup, providing impressive power and efficiency.

What features and equipment does the VW T-Roc R-Line have?

The Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line is set apart by its unique 17-inch alloy wheel design and R-Line body-coloured bumpers. Silver roof rails enhance its practicality and rear tinted glass adds an element of privacy for rear passengers. Inside, you’ll find Air Care Climatronic dual-zone climate control, heated seats, stainless steel pedals and a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel. R-Line trim also benefits from the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro high-resolution instrument cluster with customisable menus and information.

Infotainment comes in the form of the We Connect system, which includes a six-speaker stereo, DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. The navigation, media and internet package also comes as standard on this trim.

The Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line is an exceptionally safe car, boasting a wide range of protective features. Front Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking helps you avoid frontal collisions by detecting objects in your path and warning you to brake.

When manoeuvring you’ll be helped by Park Assist, which includes front and rear parking sensors. At night, High Beam Assist switches the headlights between dipped and full beam, providing optimum visibility without dazzling oncoming drivers.
