The new BMW X2 is coming soon.

BMW has lifted the wraps from its second-generation X2, ahead of first UK deliveries which are scheduled for March next year. Order books are now open at Arnold Clark BMW dealerships. Boasting new coupé-SUV looks and a larger footprint, the 2024 X2 will go head-to-head with the likes of the Audi Q3 and, now with the option of electric power in the iX2, it’ll also rival the Audi Q4 E-tron.

Bigger in every dimension – the new X2 is 200mm longer, 21mm wider and 64mm taller than the original model – it now also boasts more boot space, up by a not insignificant 115 litres. There’s also more leg room for rear passengers.

Externally, the latest version not only sees the X2’s signature kidney grille grow in dimension, but it can now be highlighted by an optional ring of LED running lights dubbed Iconic Glow.

The car’s aerodynamics have been improved by the incorporation of active cooling flaps into the grille which automatically close when not required. As you would expect, on the electric iX2, the grille is completely sealed off. This further boosts aerodynamic performance and extends its range between charges.

Further aerodynamic work under the body has resulted in a drag coefficient 0.02 below that of the petrol model, at 0.25. This in turn has contributed to a WLTP-certified range of up to 279 miles for the all-electric version, which is an improvement on the straight-backed iX1 with which it shares its platform.

Power for the iX2 comes from a 64.8kWh battery which feeds its dual-motor, four-wheel-drive package and delivers 309bhp and 364lb/ft of torque, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 5.6 seconds. Like the iX1, the iX2 has a maximum charging rate of 130kW on DC connections, meaning a 10% – 80% top-up from a suitably fast DC rapid charger should take just 29 minutes. Significantly, BMW states the iX2 can charge at full speed more consistently than its previous EVs thanks to revised software.

Fast though the iX2 is, the quickest model in the range is actually the petrol M35i, which sees the baby sports SUV deliver a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds from its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. This sends 296bhp and 295lb/ft to all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox and a mechanical limited-slip differential.

Inside the cabin, the M35i swaps the standard leather seats found elsewhere in the X2 range for Alcantara bucket seats. Across the range, every new X2 gets the latest version of BMW’s iDrive system, which is displayed across a 10.25-inch digital dial display and a 10.7-inch touchscreen.

Prices? The 2024 X2 range starts at £39,365, which will get you the sDrive20i; its 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and small electric motor delivers 168bhp. The attractive package sees it hit 62mph from standstill in 8.3 seconds, with fuel consumption averaging between 43.5-47.1mpg on the WLTP cycle, and CO2 emissions of between 136/km and 148g/km.

The M35i will set you back £47,395, while the range-topping iX2 carries a premium at £56,540.
