Blue Fiat 500X from the front

There are few vehicles that possess a look as distinctive and instantly recognisable as the Fiat 500 supermini. As such, it is perhaps no surprise to learn that the introduction of the Fiat 500X compact SUV proved a popular move back in 2015, adding a touch of off-road style and capability to one of the automotive world’s most compelling models. Since this initial launch, the 500X has undergone a number of mor facelifts, most notably in 2018 when the diesel engines and four-wheel drive version were simultaneously dropped.

Fiat 500X updates and facelifts

Blue Fiat 500X from the rear

With an elevated ride-height and larger dimensions, the Fiat 500X sits nicely in the manufacturer’s lineup between the standard 500 and the even larger 500L MPV. Available in three trim levels .– Urban, City Cross, and Cross Plus – the 500X also features plenty of personality, capability and technology. What’s more, from 2022 the 500X are available solely in petrol-hybrid form, with older versions in the used marketplace still featuring a range of petrol.

Easy to drive and striking in its appearance, the Fiat 500X is a popular choice among those looking for something a little different from the norm. Placed in competition with the likes of the Peugeot 2008 and the SEAT Ateca, the 500X is more compact and manoeuvrable, with smooth engine performance and a cheerful, vibrant cabin adding to its fun design.

The Fiat 500X is as stylish and head-turning as they come, with affordable running costs, economical performance and a fashionable aesthetic no matter which trim you choose.

Practicality and style of the car

The regular Fiat 500 is renowned for its compact proportions, making it the ultimate runaround for those living in urban environments. With the introduction of the 500X, however, the Italian manufacturer aimed to deliver a vehicle that provides far more in terms of practicality. At 2,025mm in width and 1,620mm in height compared to the Fiat 500’s more diminutive proportions of 1,893mm and 1,488mm respectively, the extra space is clear to see. And, when it comes to a compact SUV like the Fiat 500X, every one of those millimetres counts.

The 500X is a great choice for those with a young family. With ISOFIX mounting points on both outer rear seats, it’s quick and easy to fit child seats or booster cushions.

One of the standout features of the 500X is its surprisingly generous boot space. The standard luggage capacity of this model is a noteworthy 350 litres, which is already a substantial amount of space. However, the true versatility of the 500X's storage capabilities becomes apparent when you take advantage of the 60/40 split seats. By folding these down, you can significantly increase the boot space to an impressive 1,000 litres. This expanded capacity transforms the 500X into a vehicle that can handle larger loads with ease, making it perfect for those weekend getaways or trips where you need to carry larger items.

Running costs

A compact model such as the Fiat 500X provides many advantages over its larger counterparts, particularly when it comes to running costs. For instance, insuring the Fiat 500X is extremely affordable, with the model sitting between insurance groups 5 and 20 (out of 50), while road tax will cost no more than £240 annually, depending on the trim and engine. On certain pre-2017 iterations, you’ll pay as little road tax as £20 per year.

How a used Fiat 500X drives

With the introduction of the Fiat 500X in 2015, the model was accompanied by a selection of engine options including 1.3-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines, as well as a 1.6-litre petrol edition. In 2019, however, these engine options were retired and replaced with a choice between a 1.0-litre turbocharged FireFly and a four-cylinder 1.3-litre FireFly. The former of these produced an impressive 118bhp and 190Nm of torque, whereas the 1.3-litre model’s output was 148bhp and it achieved 0-62mph in just 9.1 seconds.

Both petrol options have ceased production, replaced by a solitary petrol-electric hybrid. This combination of self-charging 48v battery and 1.5-litre petrol combustion engine results in a combined output of 130bhp, with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard for smooth and efficient motoring. Overall, the engine is capable of achieving up to 49.6mpg and accelerating from 0-62mph in 9.2 seconds.

As is often the case with popular models like the Fiat 500X, the used car market is brimming with a plethora of older models. This abundance of options means that – whether you have a preference for the smooth performance of a petrol engine or the fuel-efficiency of a diesel powertrain – you will be able to find a variant that suits your specific needs and preferences.
