Why choose Arnold Clark?
As a small family car, the Fiat Tipo offers drivers a spacious interior and good value for money. The Fiat Tipo is also equipped with plenty of modern, practical technology, enhancing its appeal to modern drivers. The Tipo is available either as a five-door hatchback or an estate, known as the Fiat Tipo Station Wagon.
Both versions are competitive in the small family car market, holding their own against rivals like the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and SEAT Leon.
Fiat Tipo updates and facelifts
Originally launched in 1988, the Fiat Tipo would see a modern version launched 28 years later in 2016. The Fiat Tipo was designed to be affordable yet attractive to buyers, so a range of impressive features are included across the trim levels available. A new set of trim levels were added after 2018, such as the S-Design, Street and Mirror. These trim levels were added to the existing line up of Easy, Lounge, City Life and Cross.
In 2018, the five-inch infotainment screen was replaced with a seven-inch screen and added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.
In 2021, Fiat reduced the engine range by discontinuing the two 1.4-litre petrol engines and 1.6-litre diesel engine. 2022 saw a new 1.5-litre petrol hybrid engine introduced for the Fiat Tipo.
Practicality and style of the car
Both the hatchback and the estate offer a generous amount of space to transport luggage and suitcases with the rear seats up or down. With the rear seats in place, the hatchback has a 440-litre boot, while the estate has a 550-litre boot. These can both be expanded to accommodate larger items by folding down the rear seats. This expands the hatchback capacity to 1,300 litres, and the estate to 1,830 litres.
In comparison to its rivals, the Fiat Tipo has a spacious boot. The hatchback has more room than the Ford Focus with 375 litres, the Vauxhall Astra with 422 litres and the SEAT Leon with 380 litres. The estate has 105 litres more space than the Kia Ceed’s 395 litres. When expanded, the Tipo’s size is larger than the Ford Focus estate and SEAT Leon estate with 1,620 litres and 1,650 litres.
The boot of the estate also features a variable floor. This adds to the Tipo’s practicality, as it can be used as an additional ‘hidden’ compartment under the boot floor to store valuables when away from the car or keep safety equipment out of view. This can also be set at an angle, which is useful when looking to prevent loose shopping or smaller bags from rolling around in the boot.
Running costs
The Fiat Tipo falls between insurance groups 6 to 16 and has an annual road tax of up to £200. This sits below the majority of its rivals which have a larger insurance group bracket. The Vauxhall Astra sits in groups 16 to 28, and the Kia Ceed sits in groups 8 to 22. The Vauxhall Astra can also have a higher road tax, which is between £170 and £560.
How a used Fiat Tipo drives
The Fiat Tipo is available in a range of petrol, diesel or hybrid engines.
The petrol range consists of three engines. The entry-level engine, and the petrol engine available on iterations after 2021, is the 1.0-litre 99bhp engine. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 12.2 seconds and is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. This has a good fuel efficiency, returning between 48.7 and 51.4mpg.
Two 1.4-litre petrol engines are available on the Tipo. These include a 1.4-litre 94bhp engine that can achieve 0 to 62mph in 12.4 seconds. This returned between 40.9 and 53.3mpg. The turbocharged 1.4-litre puts down 118bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in 9.6 seconds. This engine returns between 36.7 and 56.5mpg. The 1.4-litre petrol engines are matched to a six-speed manual gearbox.
There are also three diesel engines available on the Fiat Tipo. The 1.3-litre diesel engine produces 95bhp and achieves 0 to 62mph in 12 seconds. This engine also has a superior fuel efficiency, returning between 62.8 and 85.6mpg.
The 1.6-litre 110bhp engine was available on the Tipo until 2020 and achieved 0 to 62mph in 11.5 seconds. This came paired to either an automatic or manual gearbox and returned between 30.7 and 61.4mpg. The 1.6-litre 118bhp engine was available until 2021 and achieved 0 to 62mph in 10.1 seconds. This came with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This engine returned between 53.3 and 74.3mpg.
The hybrid engine was introduced in 2022 and consists of a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 48V starter generator and a 15kW battery. This can put down a combined 128bhp and 240Nm of torque. It comes matched with an automatic gearbox and achieves 0 to 62mph in 9.3 seconds. The hybrid engine has a fuel efficiency of around 53.8mpg.

Features you can expect to find in a Fiat Tipo
Interior
The interior of the Tipo is impressively built and finished with solid, good-quality materials. The design is smart too, with highlights of chrome that reflect the design of the exterior.
The infotainment screen is either five inches or seven inches in size, depending on the iteration. It uses the Uconnect system found on other Fiat models. The menu is described as easy to use, with clear graphics. The system is controlled via a modern touchscreen interface and as well as a series of shortcut buttons.
The system can be connected to smartphones via Bluetooth, USB, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Not only can drivers connect to their personal music library for onboard entertainment, but they can also navigate to their phone contacts for hands-free calling, as well as navigating applications.
There is also a smart seven-inch digital instrument cluster, which displays traditional dials such as the speedometer, fuel gauge and rev counter digitally. This can also display other information depending on the preference of the driver.
Also located on the dashboard is a set of physical controls that are used to adjust the air conditioning in the cabin of the car.
The inside of the Fiat Tipo is comfortable and offers passengers plenty of legroom and headroom. The estate is 200mm longer, offering passengers more headroom. Comfort is enhanced further with the Tipo’s suspension, which dampens rough roads and sharp corners.
In the front of the Fiat Tipo, there is a deep central tray to store personal belongings such as keys and smartphones, a pair of cup holders in the central dashboard, a good-sized glovebox and a cubby in the central armrest. In the rear, map pockets on the back of the front seats provide a good storage space to stow away entertainment devices. Door bins in the front and rear are also generously sized, allowing passengers to store water bottles or other essentials for longer drives.
Technology
The Fiat Tipo comes with a range of features to assist the driver when on the road. Active lane-keeping helps drivers to maintain a central position on the road and prevents the vehicle from straying to the edges of the lane. Adaptive cruise control maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front and can slow down and speed up when in traffic. Traffic sign recognition helps to inform the driver of local speed limits and oncoming speed cameras so they can adjust their speed accordingly.
Other features include a reversing camera and rear parking sensors, which are useful when reversing into parking spaces. Auto headlights and wipers turn on and off depending on light levels and weather conditions. Remote locking can also feature on the Tipo.
Safety
The Fiat Tipo scored three stars on the Euro NCAP safety tests but gained an extra star with the safety pack installed. The Fiat Tipo also scored 82% and 60% on adult and child occupancy tests. Notably, the Fiat Tipo scored higher than its rival, the Vauxhall Astra, on adult protection, scoring 80%.
Safety features on the Tipo include two ISOFIX points on the outermost rear seats for securing child seats, a series of airbags in the front and rear and a seatbelt reminder. Autonomous emergency braking activates when detecting an oncoming obstacle, helping to avoid collisions. Blind spot monitoring can also feature.
