Black Jeep Renegade from the front

Arnold Clark offers the best used Jeep Renegade deals, guaranteed. And if you find a better deal elsewhere, we’ll give you back double the difference.

Jeep’s reputation for large, go-anywhere SUVs is little short of legendary. Following on the heels of a string of tough, terrain-conquering models, the Renegade came as something of a surprise when it was launched in 2015. Here was the brand’s smallest and most efficient model to date, built to enable those on a tighter budget to reap all the benefits of owning a Jeep.

Jeep Renegade updates and facelifts

Black Jeep Renegade from the rear

The Renegade arrived in the UK in February 2015 in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive variants. For the first time, Jeep was putting road-going ability first, but without the desire to compromise on off-road prowess. Two petrol and two diesel engines were on offer: 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines. All-wheel drive came as standard on the 2.0-litre diesel.

A refreshed version appeared in 2018, replacing a couple of the engine options and updating the styling. Now, the petrol units comprise 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre versions. Then in 2020, the Renegade 4xe (pronounced “4-by-e”) joined the line-up – a plug-in hybrid version that paired the 1.3-litre petrol engine with a 59bhp electric motor. The diesel engines were dropped a little later.

Trim levels for the petrol/diesel variants include Longitude, Night Eagle, Limited and Trailhawk. The Renegade 4xe comes in Limited, Upland and Trailhawk iterations. Rivals include a range of small SUVs – including the Vauxhall Mokka, Ford EcoSport, Honda CH-R and Nissan Juke – though none can match the Renegade for off-road capability.

Practicality and style of the car

The Jeep Renegade’s compact exterior belies a surprisingly roomy cabin. Its boxy shape means there’s ample space to seat four tall occupants plus a child or young adult in the centre rear seat, and its wide-opening doors and raised ride height mean access is easy.

Carrying luggage is a breeze thanks to the Renegade’s 351-litre boot, which expands to an impressive 1,297 litres with the rear seats folded. That’s more than the maximum capacity of the MINI Countryman. Top-spec iterations also get 40/20/40 split rear seats, offering flexibility when it comes to carrying oversized items. There’s also a handy reversible boot floor, so any time you need to load up muddy shoes or garden waste, the floor can be wiped clean. The outer rear also seats have ISOFIX anchor points, accommodating young children safely.

Those looking to tow a caravan or trailer will be more than satisfied with the Renegade’s ability. The 1.0-litre petrol can haul 1,250kg, while the 2.0-litre diesel has a towing capacity of 1,500kg.

Running costs

For an SUV, the Jeep Renegade is pleasingly affordable to insure. Most models occupy groups 8-16 out of 50 (depending on trim level), with PHEV options sitting in the 21-23 band. It’s also relatively inexpensive to tax, with many models incurring the standard rate of £180. Depending on year and emissions, some may even cost just £35 per year to tax.

How a used Jeep Renegade drives

Pre-2018 Jeep Renegades come with a choice of two petrol engines: a 1.4-litre MultiAir producing 138bhp or 168bhp, and a 1.6-litre with an output of 109bhp. There are also two diesels on offer: a 118bhp 1.6-litre MultiJet unit and a 138bhp 2.0-litre MultiJet. All except the 2.0-litre MultiJet come with front-wheel drive as standard; the latter comes with four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox.

Choose a more recent Renegade and you’ll find diesel options the same, the petrol units include a 1.0-litre 118bhp engine with six-speed manual transmission and a 1.3-litre 148bhp variant with a six-speed automatic gearbox. Of these, the 1.0-litre is the most efficient, returning 47.9- 64.2mpg while still completing the 0-62mph sprint in 11.2 seconds.

Opt for the 1.3-litre and the 0-62mph acceleration time drops to 9.4 seconds, with efficiency remaining at a respectable 47.9mpg. The diesel options, which were available until late 2020, delivered up to 64.2mpg (1.6-litre MultiJet) and 55.4mpg (2.0-litre MultiJet).

Those looking for a more sustainable option can choose the Renegade 4xe with its plug-in hybrid powertrain. Combining a 1.3-litre 128bhp engine with 59bhp motor powered by a 11.4kWh battery pack, this variant offers up a total output of 187bhp and 26 miles of all-electric range.

Trailhawk editions get a 50bhp power boost from the engine, providing a total output of 237bhp. The 4xe is also the fastest in the line-up, reaching 62mph from a standstill in just 7.5 seconds (or 7.1 seconds in the Trailhawk). Add to that standard four-wheel drive, a combined fuel economy of up to 134.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 49-52g/km and it’s a very attractive option.

In a family car, safety is vital and although the Renegade scored three stars in its 2019 Euro NCAP test, it ranked highly for adult and child occupant protection, earning 82% and 84%. In addition to its high-strength steel body construction, this rugged SUV offers multiple front and side airbags, and a rollover mitigation system, which reduces the chance of the car rolling during emergency manoeuvres. There’s also Traffic Sign Recognition, which identifies speed limits and displays them, helping to ensure you drive safely.

The Jeep Renegade boasts its fair share of driver aids to ensure journeys go smoothly. There’s Lane Departure Warning to prevent you from straying out of your lane on the motorway, and parking sensors to help you manoeuvre and slot into small spaces safely. A used Jeep Renegade might have optional kit too, including Automatic Emergency Braking and Blind Spot Warning.
