Why choose Arnold Clark?
As an executive saloon, the Lexus ES carries a certain level of sophistication with its premium looks and smart interior. It has been refined over the years to compete with the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class and Jaguar XF. With rivals like these, you can expect the Lexus ES to offer prestige, powerful engines and plenty of tech.
Lexus ES updates and facelifts
The model has been part of the line-up in the US since 1989 but first came to UK dealerships in 2019 to replace the GS model. Lexus brought the ES to the UK market with one engine, a 2.5-litre petrol hybrid, and in one body shape, the saloon.
It has the distinctive low-slung body for a sporty driving experience along with a decent boot and plenty of space in the back to live up to the demands of family life or adventurous weekends away. As the brand’s best-selling model, the ES has all-round appeal as a premium choice.
In the UK, used Lexus ES models are all in their seventh generation or newer. When the ES took over from the GS, it switched from a rear-wheel-drive to a front-wheel drive. In 2021 it had a facelift, bringing adaptive headlights and a new touchscreen.
Practicality and style of the car
Lexus prides itself on offering decent space for all occupants to enjoy the drive. According to the marque, the ES has just 1mm less knee room than its full-sized saloon, the LS, so passengers will have plenty of space to relax. Designed to comfortably transport adults in the back, your passengers will get plenty of head and leg room, even those who are over six feet tall.
You’ll find lots of storage cubbies throughout the cabin, from the large central console that doubles up as an armrest to the generous door bins, helping everyone keep the interior clutter-free.
The 530-litre boot in the Lexus ES is larger than its hybrid rivals produced at the same time. For example, the Mercedes E-Class hybrid has 370 litres of boot space, while the BMW 530e offers 410 litres. That’s largely because the Lexus ES has a self-charging powertrain, meaning it doesn’t have a large battery pack taking up room in the back. The rear seats don’t fold down, but there is a ski hatch in the middle seat for transporting longer items.
If you plan to use the Lexus ES for trips away, it can tow loads of up to 1,500kg. That means it’s also possible to tow a trailer if you need to transport bulkier items.
Running costs
As a premium saloon, the Lexus ES falls into insurance groups 31 to 38. It stands up well against the competition, with the BMW 530e starting at group 28 and spanning to group 46 and the Jaguar XF ranging from groups 26 to 42. Road tax is either £170 or £560 a year. The additional £390 per year is levied on cars registered after 1 April 2017, meaning older Lexus ES models are cheaper to tax.
How a used Lexus ES drives
All Lexus ES models come with a 2.5-litre petrol engine with a self-charging electric motor. That means you don’t need to plug it in at home or on the road – it will charge itself while the engine’s running, even when you’re slowing down, thanks to a regenerative braking system. Just fill up with petrol, turn on the engine and press down on the accelerator like a classic automatic. It automatically selects between the petrol and electric modes to match the driving style.
The Lexus ES has a total 214bhp, with the petrol engine putting out 178bhp supported by a 36bhp electric motor. It can reach 0 to 62mph in just less than nine seconds. With the self-charging petrol motor doing some of the work, the Lexus ES can return between 42 and 65mpg. As the electric motor works automatically, Lexus doesn’t quote an official range for driving in all-electric mode. However, it is possible to drive on electric alone at low speeds.

Features you can expect in a Lexus ES
Interior
The Lexus ES has the characteristic refinement you expect of a premium saloon, complete with ambient lighting to set the scene. A slim suite of controls on the dashboard keeps it clean and smart in the cockpit, while curved lines on the dashboard give a hint of sportiness. The 10-way adjustable power seats up front will help you find your ideal driving position. Many also come with heated seats to quickly warm you up on winter mornings. All Lexus ES variants come with climate control.
Models from 2021 onwards have a 12.3-inch touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard, which replaced a screen with a touchpad on earlier models. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay allow you to plug in and listen to your choice of music as you drive.
Technology
A range of technology comes as standard in the Lexus ES. A rear-view camera and front and rear parking sensors will help you steer into spaces effortlessly. You can employ cruise control to take the pressure off on the motorway, making longer journeys less tiring. Turn on lane tracing and the car will monitor lane markers or the vehicle in front and steer you on track.
Road sign assist will help you keep up with the traffic signs you pass. When you drive at night, the headlights will automatically switch from high to low beam when you’re at risk of dazzling an oncoming driver, so you can focus on the road. Many variants also come with built in sat nav.
Safety
Euro NCAP awarded the Lexus ES the best in its class for safety when it earned its five-star rating. It has an adult occupant score of 91% and a child passenger score of 87%. ISOFIX points in the rear make it possible to safely fit child seats in the rear. Head, knee and side airbags help to protect all passengers.
The ES has a generous suite of safety technology included as standard. It comes with lane departure warning and assist to prevent you from veering outside the lines as well as pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection. These features warn you if there’s a hazard and acts automatically if you don’t.
Trims available on the Lexus ES
Lexus ES Standard Trim
The entry-level trim comes with a large infotainment screen in the dashboard, which is a 12.3-inch touchscreen in models from 2021 onwards. LED lights and 17-inch alloy wheels come as standard, with 18-inch alloys as an optional upgrade. Parking sensors, cruise control and a suite of safety tech make for a relaxing drive.
Lexus ES F-Sport
True to its name, the F-Sport adds racing-inspired styling with aluminium pedals, a black headliner and rear spoiler. The suspension is tuned for a sportier driving experience while lateral side dampers help keep the car steady during fast acceleration. 19-inch alloy wheels complete the look outside, while sports seats set the scene inside.
Lexus ES Takumi
The top-level Takumi comes with a 17-speaker Mark Levinson sound system, filling the cabin with the music you choose. An electric tailgate makes life easier when your hands are full carrying luggage or shopping. Really setting this trim apart is the head-up display, which projects your speed and other driving information onto the windscreen, so you don’t need to take your eyes from the road.
