First launching in 2014, the Lexus NX is a mid-sized premium SUV that provides drivers with efficient hyrbid engines as well as plenty of technology and features. With a smart and high-quality interior, the Lexus NX provides onboard comfort for passengers.
The Lexus NX competes well with other mid-sized premium SUVs and hybrid SUVs such as the BMW X3 and iX3, Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. The Lexus NX offers a good amount of space and is great value for money. The NX is a popular choice with drivers and in 2022 was awarded the Mid-sized Premium SUV of the Year by AutoExpress.
Lexus NX updates and facelifts
The NX was Lexus’s first luxury mid-sized SUV and has had some updates since its launch. In 2017, the NX received a facelift which introduced some subtle exterior and interior design changes. On the exterior, a new front grille design and reshaped bumpers and headlights gave the NX a more modern look. In the interior, a 10.3-inch infotainment system was introduced as well as a 4.2-inch TFT LCD screen on the instrument cluster.
In 2021, the NX received another facelift which subtly redesigned the exterior and interior. A new front grille design with an enhanced design was added along with some new body sculpting and headlights. Inside, new screens were added to display more information. These included a 10-inch digital instrument panel along with a 7-inch head-up display, a 9.8-inch or 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity options.
Practicality and style of the car
The Lexus NX has a good-sized boot, offering 545 litres of space to store luggage. This can easily be expanded to 1,436 litres when transporting larger items – which is also helped by the absence of a loading lip as a result of the raised boot floor.
In comparison, the Audi Q5 hybrid offers 465 litres of boot space which is just under 100 litres less than that offered on the NX. Similarly, the Mercedes-Benz GLC hybrid offers a 400-litre boot, making the NX boot larger in comparison. When expanded, the NX offers only 30 litres less than its nearest competitor, the Audi Q5 with 1,465 litres.
In the boot of the Lexus NX, there is an underfloor compartment that neatly stores the charging cable out of the way. There are also small storage areas in the sides of the boot that help to keep the boot tidy.
For towing a small trailer or caravan, the Lexus NX can tow up to 1,500kg with either the hybrid or plug-in hybrid engines.
Running costs
The Lexus NX falls into insurance groups 31 to 41 and has an annual road tax of £560. This falls into lower insurance groups than the Mercedes-Benz GLC, 40 to 50, and the BMW iX3, 44 to 45. It can also have a lower road tax than the BMW X3, which has an annual road tax of between £560 and £570.
How a used Lexus NX drives
The Lexus NX is available with two powertrains: a plug-in hybrid and a standard hybrid.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain consists of the NX 450+ 2.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor. It has 302bhp combined that generates 227Nm of torque. This achieves 0 to 62mph in 6.3 seconds and provides between 41.5 and 44.8mpg. As a result of its large battery, this powertrain can also travel up to 42 miles on pure electric, before needing to be recharged. This takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes using a domestic charger. This powertrain is mated to a CVT gearbox and comes with all wheel drive.
The self-charging hybrid powertrain comprises the 350h 2.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor. It puts down a combined 238bhp and 239Nm of torque. This can come with all wheel drive, which allows the NX to achieve 0 to 62mph in 7.7 seconds, or 8.7 seconds without it. This powertrain comes mated to a CVT gearbox and returns between 44.1 to 49.5mpg.

Features you can expect to find in a Lexus NX
Interior
The interior of the NX is well built with high-quality materials which helps to make it look modern and stylish.
The dashboard features an infotainment display which uses Lexus’s Link Pro or Link Connect system. This comes in different sizes depending on the iteration and trim level. On iterations before 2021, the NX comes with a 10-inch infotainment screen. After 2021, the entry-level NX trim gets a 9.8-inch screen, while higher trim levels receive a 14-inch screen. These screens are angled slightly towards the driver so that they can easily see and operate the system.
On versions prior to 2021, the 10-inch infotainment screen is controlled via a touchpad located at the bottom of the screen. Versions after 2021 incorporate a refined and responsive touchscreen interface to navigate the menu. To help with navigation, there is a shortcut bar that can be used to move around the menu to control car functions quickly. Alternatively, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity can be used to access personal music libraries and navigation systems. Located below this screen are a set of physical dials and controls for the dual-zone climate control system.
On higher trim levels, there is also a 10-inch digital instrument panel which displays traditional dials along with other information digitally. The Lexus NX can also come with a 7-inch head-up display which informs the driver about important information such as speed and fuel levels without them needing to take their eyes off the road.
Other features such as a heated steering wheel, rear privacy glass, smart keyless entry and wireless phone chargers can feature if the vehicle has the Premium or Premium Plus Pack included.
The cabin of the Lexus NX is spacious, giving both front and rear passengers plenty of legroom and headroom.
To add to the comfort of the vehicle, the suspension dampens rough roads, with the F-Sport trim receiving adaptive sports suspension giving the NX a firm but smooth ride.
Storage spaces are located around the cabin for stowing away personal items. In the front, there is a good-sized glovebox, a cubby located in the central armrest for storing valuables out of sight and a pair of cupholders on the central console. Door bins in the front and back are decently sized to store a range of items.
Technology
The Lexus NX comes with several driver-assistance features. As standard, the Lexus NX comes with a dynamic radar cruise control, which uses sensors around the car to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, slowing down and speeding up where necessary. Also, as standard, is adaptive high beam and lane keep assist. On trim levels higher than the entry-level NX trim, driver-assistance features include an autonomous self-parking function, which enables drivers to simply activate the self-park feature and let the car park itself guided by cameras and sensors located around the car. Lane change assist alerts the driver to adjacent vehicles in other lanes, especially in the car's blind spots to prevent collisions when changing lane.
Safety
The Lexus NX scored a full five stars on the Euro NCAP safety tests. The NX also scored highly on adult and child occupant protection tests, scoring 91% and 87%, respectively. In comparison to the NX’s rivals, it performed well. It beat the child protection scores of both the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, which scored 86% and 84% respectively.
Safety features on a Lexus NX include a full complement of air bags in the front and rear for passenger and driver safety and autonomous emergency braking. The NX also comes as standard with a pre-collision autonomous braking system which can detect a potential crash and applies the brakes if the driver doesn’t respond quickly enough. Other features include front and rear cross traffic alert that alerts drivers of oncoming vehicles when reversing or when turning at a junction. Lexus’s E-latch system, which works alongside blind spot monitoring, automatically locks the doors if it detects an oncoming cyclist, pedestrian or vehicle when the car is stationary. This prevents the driver from opening the door and causing a collision.
