Mercedes-Benz GLC updates and facelifts

Blue Mercedes-Benz GLC from the side

Available in a variety of diesel, petrol or hybrid engines, a used Mercedes-Benz GLC offers drivers a spacious, powerful and comfortable driving experience. Rival premium SUVs include the BMW X3, Jaguar F-Pace and Audi Q5, which the GLC competes comfortably with.

In 2016, the 43 trim was added to the line-up, giving the GLC a sportier look and performance. The GLC received a facelift in 2020, offering drivers the choice of two new efficient hybrid engines. Mercedes-Benz also tweaked the interior design, including more technology and increasing the boot size by 70 litres.

A used Mercedes-Benz GLC is also available in many different trims, offering unique features and body kits to enhance the look of the model.

Practicality and style of the car

As a large luxury SUV, the Mercedes-Benz GLC offers plenty of boot space. With a capacity of 550 litres, expanding to 724 litres by folding down the rear seats, this opens up a large flat space to transport bulky items. The boot also has a low lip and flat floor, which makes it easy to load and unload luggage.

The boot space does vary depending on which trim and generation of Mercedes-Benz GLC you opt for. A Mercedes-Benz GLC with a hybrid engine has a reduced boot space due to the battery being located in the boot.

The GLC confidently tows small trailers for transporting larger items. With a petrol engine, the GLC has a maximum braked weight of 2,000kg. This increases with a diesel engine to 2,500kg. Both engines also have an unbraked weight capacity of 750kg.

Running costs

As a luxury SUV, a used Mercedes-Benz GLC falls into insurance groups 40 to 50, with road tax being between £560-£570. This matches other luxury SUVs on the market. However, you can expect good returns on mpg from the range of engines available, which will help keep running costs down.

How a used Mercedes-Benz GLC drives

There are a variety of engines to choose from including diesel, petrol and hybrid engines.

For diesel engines, a Mercedes-Benz GLC can come with the 220d or 300d 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, or, in iterations before 2019, a 2.1-litre diesel engine. These engines are all mated to an automatic gearbox and can output between 191bhp and 242bhp. These diesel engines are also fuel efficient, returning around 47.9mpg.

On the AMG Line trim, a 3.0-litre diesel engine is available that can put down 254bhp. This can achieve 0 to 62mph in 6 seconds and has a fuel efficiency of around 29.1mpg.

The petrol engine available on a Mercedes-Benz GLC is the GLC 300 2.0-litre petrol engine. It delivers around 254bhp and returns around 34.4mpg. This engine can feature a new turbocharger and a mild-hybrid system comprising of a 48V electric motor which electrically aids acceleration, providing a 23bhp boost.

The 4.0-litre petrol engine is exclusive to AMG trim levels. This engine can put down up to 502bhp and achieves 0-62mph in just 3.7 seconds. This engine has a fuel efficiency of between 23.7mpg and 24.4mpg.

For hybrid engines, there is the GLC 300e 2.0-litre petrol PHEV and the GLC 300d 2.0-litre diesel PHEV. The petrol plug-in hybrid engine uses a 31kWh battery with an electric motor for a combined 313bhp with 550Nm of torque. This is also available with an automatic gearbox.

Mercedes-Benz's long-range fuel-efficient diesel hybrid with an electric motor offers a combined power of 329bhp and 750Nm of torque. The fuel economy of this hybrid engine is 148.7mpg.

With air suspension providing a smooth ride, a used Mercedes-Benz GLC has good handling and is great for long journeys on the motorway. The GLC comes as standard with rear-wheel drive, but you will also find some four-wheel-drive models. This, combined with good ground clearance, means you can expect the Mercedes-Benz GLC to perform well on most road surfaces.
