The MG HS is a spacious mid-sized crossover SUV that makes a great family-friendly car and comes with a choice of efficient engines. The stylish interior and exterior come with plenty of technology and features that will satisfy the modern driver.

The MG HS competes well on the popular SUV market rivalling the Nissan Qashqai, Škoda Karoq, SEAT Ateca, Ford Kuga and the Mazda CX-5.

MG HS updates and facelifts

White MG HS from the front

First launched in 2018, the MG HS received a facelift in 2023, which made subtle changes to the exterior and interior of the vehicle. On the exterior, MG added a new front grille, bumpers and a revised front and rear light design. They also redesigned the 18-inch alloy wheels, that subsequently come as standard across the trim levels, and added twin exhaust tips.

The 2023 facelift also saw a change to the trim structure available for the MG HS. Previously, the Explore, Excite and Exclusive trims were available, but MG streamlined these to just the entry-level SE or the top-level Trophy trim. The MG HS is available with either a petrol or hybrid engine.

Practicality and style of the car

The MG HS has a boot size of 463 litres, which can easily be expanded to 1,454 litres by folding down the rear seats. On hybrid versions, the boot decreases slightly to accommodate the battery and electric motor, offering 448 litres, or 1,375 litres when expanded.

The boot comes with a useful hidden storage area where you can store a safety kit or keep valuables out of sight. The boot also comes with a retractable load cover that can shield the boot for extra security. The 463-litre boot is bigger than the 412 litres offered by the Ford Kuga, while the Nissan Qashqai offers a 510-litre boot.

For transporting larger items, the MG HS can tow a maximum of 1,750kg with the petrol engine, which is enough for a small trailer or caravan. This is reduced to 1,500kg with the hybrid engine. Roof rails also come with an MG HS allowing for roof boxes or racks to be installed for extra storage.

Two ISOFIX anchor points are located on the outer rear seats to easily secure child seats in the back for those drivers with a young family.

Running costs

Sitting in insurance groups 16 to 33 out of 50, the MG HS has an annual road tax between £170 and £180. The HS sits a little higher than rivals such as the ŠKODA Koraq, which sits in groups 10 to 25, but can also come in lower than the Ford Kuga, which sits in groups 11 to 50. Road tax is also lower for the HS compared to rivals, as road tax for the Ford Kuga and Mazda CX-5 is between £170 and £570 per year.

Features you can expect in an MG HS

Interior

MG HS rear interior seats with central armrest and cupholder down

The HS’s cabin is spacious and offers plenty of comfort and convenience for the driver and for passengers.

On the centre of the dashboard is a large 10.1-inch infotainment system, which comes standard on all MG HSs. The infotainment system received an update as part of the 2023 facelift, but even before that, the infotainment menu is easy to use and navigate. Coming as standard, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity allow you to easily access apps for onboard entertainment, navigation and contacts. As part of the pre-2023 Excite and Exclusive trims, Bluetooth connectivity and a DAB radio were added along with an integrated sat nav system, but after 2023 these were made standard features.

The infotainment screen comes with a touchscreen interface along with a series of shortcut buttons to control car functions such as heated seats or climate control.

On the petrol models, the MG HS gets a TFT display located between two analogue dials that show the driver important information. On hybrid models the traditional dials are replaced with a digital instrument panel.

Both passengers and the driver will enjoy the level of comfort inside the cabin of the HS. With plenty of legroom and headroom, even taller adults will be comfortable. The rear seats can recline, allowing rear passengers to get comfortable and the driver's seat features electrical adjustment. The HS can easily fit five passengers without any discomfort and the wide opening doors make installing child seats convenient, so the HS makes a great choice as a family car.

The suspension on the MG HS helps to dampen rough roads by using MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link suspension set-up in the rear. Engine, road and wind noise is reduced in the cabin helping to make the cabin quieter.

There are plenty of storage spaces in the HS to stow away personal items and keep the cabin clutter-free. In front of the gear lever, there is a small, lidded cubby that can be used to store your wallet or keys when driving. There are also two cupholders and a large cubby located under the front armrest. The glovebox is a good size for storing items out of sight as well.

This package includes some safety features such as adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot detection. Lane keep assist with lane departure warning also features, helping to keep the car within the white lines and alerting the driver when they are close to the edge. This is especially helpful when on long motorway journeys. Other features include parking sensors, a reversing camera, rain-sensing wipers, auto high beam, and keyless entry.

Safety

Safety features on the MG HS are also included in the MG Pilot package, including automatic emergency braking at both low and high speeds. Other features include hill descent control, allowing drivers to descend hills safely by automatically applying the brakes slightly. The cabin of the HS gets a series of airbags in both the front and rear to protect the driver and passengers in the event of a collision. Traction control also helps to prevent the driver from skidding when having to brake sharply.
