The MG5 is a stylish, sleek family-sized estate. It was launched in late 2020 and was the first fully electric estate car on the UK market. While previously estate cars had been limited to hybrid options, the MG5 EV ushered in a new era of green driving as well as a raft of impressive tech and a luxurious design that set it apart from its rivals. As it isn’t an SUV, direct rivals are few and far between. In terms of plug-in hybrids, these include the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid-e and Peugeot 308 SW Hybrid.

MG5 updates and facelifts

While other manufacturers are investing significant resources in their own all-electric estates, the MG5 has won a huge share of plaudits since its launch and pretty much occupies a class of its own. In the 2023 What Car? Awards, it took home both the Best Electric Estate Car and Best Used Electric Estate Car prizes, cementing its position as the dominant player in the market.

Alongside its impressive eco credentials, the MG5 is a practical and dynamic vehicle that is just at home navigating tight urban spaces and country roads as it is on the motorway. Spacious and tech-friendly, the MG5 is a car of the future, for today.

The first MG5 EV was introduced to the UK in November 2020. The following summer, a long-range version was introduced, appealing to motorway drivers or those who want to pack in the family for a lengthy road trip. The initial standard-range variant was sold until February 2022.

A facelift in 2022 saw cosmetic changes, such as a more aggressive front bumper and grille. The cabin was treated to a makeover too, with a refreshed dashboard layout, relocated climate controls and a fresh centre console with a hidden storage tray and new gear selector. A larger 10.25-inch infotainment system was also introduced. Mechanically, the facelift version retains the long-range version’s motor and battery.

Practicality and style of the car

Estate cars are inherently practical, and this is no different for the MG5, despite its reputation focusing more on its green credentials. Its popular Long-range version has an impressive driving range of 250 miles, retaining the MG5’s status as a great car for a road trip.

It can easily hold five adult occupants, and there’s plenty of headroom and legroom on offer. The boot is spacious too, holding 578 litres of capacity. That’s more than the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid-e (516 litres) and the Peugeot 308 SW Hybrid (548 litres).

With the rear seats down, the space offered is even more impressive. 1,456 litres are available, more than even the Volvo V60, which can hold 1,441 litres. The MG5 offers the added bonus of 60/40 rear seating too, allowing drivers to pack in a combination of extra passengers and ample luggage – perfect for a family trip away.

The MG5 has a towing capacity of 500kg. Its Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities are a great addition that allow owners to power additional electric devices, like camping equipment, using the MG5’s internal battery.

Running costs

One of the significant financial benefits of the MG5 is the implications of its fully green credentials. As an emissions-free vehicle, owners won’t pay any road tax either in the first year or after. The MG5 sits between insurance groups 27 to 32, which is typical of cars in the same price range.

How a used MG5 drives

As the first fully electric estate on the market, the MG5 has won over a broad range of car buyers – not only thanks to its practicality and economy but also for its impressive handling and power offering. The standard-range MG5 launched in late 2020, which was on the market until February 2022, has an electric 154bhp motor combined with a 52.5kWh battery pack, hitting 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds and offering a range of around 180 miles.

The long-range model, introduced in 2021 has a larger 61.1kWh battery pack. While the same motor is used, offering the same acceleration performance, the larger battery means the MG5 can travel further before needing to be recharged (around 250 miles). This same motor and engine is used in the MG5 that received a facelift in 2022.

A single-speed transmission ensures smooth acceleration at high speeds, while a soft suspension set up gives the MG5 dynamic handling on country roads. The electric motor is near silent, so acoustics are at a minimum, but it still packs a punch off the mark for those with a thrill-seeking side.

Features you can expect in an MG5

Interior

The initial MG5 launched in late 2020 and came with a host of attractive and practical interior features as standard. Along with a classy black finish throughout, there’s a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system and plenty of storage space throughout the cabin. It is the updated 2022 version of the MG5 that gets a real boost in terms of interior features.

The infotainment system is upgraded to a 10.25-inch touchscreen, adding Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity to its feature set. The whole cabin has an ultra-modern, almost futuristic feel: high-quality plastics make up the dash and doors, while the steering wheel is leather-trimmed. With space to accommodate five adults, the MG5 is an impressively spacious estate car, offering ample headroom in the front and rear to ensure longer journeys are enjoyed in comfort.

Technology

With a rear-view camera fitted as standard, the MG5 also has MG's iSMART connected services technology integrated. This links the car’s status to an app and allows drivers to check its status and location, and make use of additional perks like pre-setting the air conditioning temperature before stepping foot in the car.

Top trim levels include heated front seats, climate control and automatic wipers, with the parking camera bumped up to show a 360-degree angle. You can also expect MG Pilot, MG’s driver assistance technology. Features included with the MG driver assistance technology include automated support with lane centring, collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian detection and high-beam assist.

Safety

While the MG5 hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP, its sibling, the MG ZS EV, received the full five stars. Across the MG5 range, you can expect the inclusion of emergency brake assist and hill launch assist, as well as an electric parking brake (with auto-hold functionality) and anti-rolling protection, depending on trim level. There are also ISOFIX seating anchors in the rear, making child seat installation easy.
