MINI Clubman updates and facelifts

The Mk2 of the MINI Clubman came in 2019, receiving subtle design changes such as the Union Jack taillights, revisited rear doors and a new range of trims. A new engine was also added to the line-up, giving drivers more choice when it comes to fuel economy and performance. The Clubman also comes with four-wheel drive versions.

Some would say that due to its unique design, the MINI Clubman does not directly compete with any other cars on the market. However, if you’re comparing on size and practicality, the MINI Clubman performs well among rivals including the Škoda Fabia Estate, Volkswagen Golf and the Audi A3.

Practicality and style of the car

The MINI Clubman offers a very practical boot that is perfect for families and everyday demands. It has a decent boot capacity of 360 litres, and a moveable boot floor which can be used to create a useful underfloor compartment to store valuables or safety equipment when not in use. By folding down the rear seats, the capacity can be expanded to up to 1,250 litres, offering more space than the Audi A3’s 1,200 litres. And unlike many other cars, the boot does not reduce in size on the four-wheel drive version.

The Clubman also comes with MINI’s unique twin barn-style boot doors, which are stylish and ensure easy access to the boot. Additional features such as storage nets and an automatic boot opening system can be found in many used MINI Clubman’s for sale and make the boot even more practical.

For towing trailers and compartments, the MINI Clubman’s maximum towing capacity of 1,300kg which is enough for a small trailer.

Running costs

The MINI Clubman falls into insurance groups 12 to 40 and has a road tax up to £290 per year. This matches rivals well – with the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3 falling into a similar insurance group range.

How a used MINI Clubman drives

You can find a used MINI Clubman available with either petrol or diesel engines.

The petrol range consists of a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that can put down 134bhp. This engine can do 0 to 62mph in 9.2 seconds and achieves up to 48.7mpg. There is also the Cooper S 2.0-litre petrol engine that is capable of 176bhp, returns 42.8mpg and achieves 0 to 62mph in 7.3 seconds. This engine comes with either an eight-speed automatic gearbox or a manual gearbox.

The John Cooper Works 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine can put down 302bhp and does 0 to 62mpg in just 4.9 seconds. This is the most powerful engine that MINI has sold and comes with four-wheel drive. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and can return up to 42.2mpg.

There are two diesel engines available in iterations before 2020: a 1.5-litre and a 2.0-litre option. These engines can put down up to 114bhp and 148bhp, respectively. Diesel engines on a MINI Clubman have excellent fuel efficiency, with the former option returning up to 74.3mpg while the latter returns up to 55.4mpg.

Features you can expect in a MINI Clubman

The MINI Clubman has a unique and well-thought-out interior with high-quality finishes and comprehensive technology features suited to all your driving needs. The exterior mirrors the distinctive look of MINI cars, as well as having some features that set it apart from other models. The two barn-style boot doors, Union Jack taillights and unique sizing places it at a halfway point between an estate and a hatchback.

Interior

Passengers will find themselves comfortable with the wide seats and plenty of headroom and legroom on offer. The Clubman offers more interior space than the MINI Hatchback thanks to its longer wheelbase, which gives passengers a little more legroom in the rear.

There are also a lot of smart storage spaces dotted around the cabin of the MINI Clubman to help keep it clutter-free. The centre console features a handy storage compartment that can be used to keep items such as keys, sunglasses and loose items. There are also two cup holders in the front, and the armrest can come with a useful smartphone compartment. The door bins and glove box are also well-sized and big enough to hold large water bottles, personal items and entertainment devices.

Technology

Inside, the distinctive MINI design continues with the central round dial on the dashboard that houses the infotainment screen and comes in two sizes depending on age and trim: a 6.5-inch or an 8.8-inch screen. This uses the iDrive infotainment system, borrowed from BMW models as MINI is part of the BMW group. This system is controlled by a rotary wheel on the centre console, and on iterations after 2018, Apple CarPlay connectivity is supported so you can easily connect to your music library and contact list for hands-free calling.

Stylish switches are located below the infotainment screen to control other functions in the car, including the on/off switch for the engine, while air conditioning is controlled via a couple of dials above these. There are also two USB plugs to connect to the infotainment system and charge your devices.

This also works with MINI’s own MINI Connecte smartphone app, which enables you to send destinations to the car’s sat nav and lock the car doors from your phone. The infotainment system also comes with a built-in 4G internet connection to help keep you connected wherever you may be.

Other features available depending on trim include a heads-up display which, along with displaying important information such as speed and fuel levels, can also show directions, while you keep your eyes on the road. A good-quality stereo system and a DAB radio is also included in the Clubman’s cabin for high audio quality.

Safety

The MINI Clubman was awarded four out of five stars by Euro NCAP, scoring 90% for adult occupant protection and 68% for child occupant protection. Safety features on the Clubman include cruise control, ISOFIX anchor points, power-assisted steering, an anti-lock braking system, autonomous emergency braking and an audible collision warning.

Other safety features include lane-departure warning, which vibrates the steering wheel if the car detects that you are drifting out of your lane, traction control and parking sensors.

Trims available on the MINI Clubman

MINI Clubman Classic

The Classic trim is the entry-level trim for the Clubman and includes a comprehensive range of features. Exterior features include automatic headlights, rain-sensing headlights, MINI logo floor projectors when the front door is open and 16-inch alloy wheels. If a used MINI Clubman comes with a Cooper S engine it comes with larger 17-inch alloy wheels for better grip. The interior features include a satellite navigation system, a DAB radio, air conditioning and keyless start technology.

MINI Clubman Sport

The Sport trim adds both interior and exterior design features and technology that help to give it an athletic look and feel. Step inside, and you will find supportive sports seats and a dark-coloured headlining. The exterior receives a special body kit as well as 18-inch John Cooper Works alloy wheels that complete the sporty look of the car. Other features include rear parking sensors, drive mode selector so that you can change the performance of the vehicle to suit your journey, and cruise control.

MINI Clubman Exclusive

The Exclusive trim adjusts the features of the Sport trim to give a premium rather than sporty look. The interior receives stylish leather highlights and bolstered seats that give a more relaxed feel to the cabin. The exterior has sleek chrome highlights and 18-inch alloy wheels.

MINI Clubman Final

The Final trim is the MINI Clubman’s flagship trim and offers exclusive exterior detailing, such as copper highlights and 18-inch alloy wheels.
