The MINI Cooper S is a widely favoured compact hatchback, often recognised by its alternate name: the MINI Hatch. Beyond its aesthetics and typical MINI allure, this MINI Cooper S model introduces a lowered suspension and an ample power reserve for a great driving experience.
BMW introduced the MINI hatch concept during the 1997 Frankfurt International Motor Show at a time when the MINI marque was under the Rover Group. The concept car’s design was a successor to the original MINI and garnered a positive public reception with its subsequent refinements. BMW officially launched the new MINI (Hatch) in 2001, a year after the sale of the Rover Group in March 2000 which coincided with the end of production on the classic MINI. This marked the beginning of a diverse MINI line-up that has since expanded.
The MINI Cooper secured victories across many competitions in its life, triumphing in the historic Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967. Through collaboration between MINI and John Cooper, the classic MINI surpassed its rivals in the domestic car market, like the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt, Volkswagen Golf GTI and Kia Soul.
MINI Cooper S updates and facelifts
The MINI Cooper S has seen significant updates in its production journey with two major facelifts. The 2021 iteration of the MINI Cooper introduced a noticeable transformation at the front end. MINI had expanded the grille size, incorporated a body-coloured strip and introduced a fresh black surround. The lower portion of the front bumper featured air inlets in place of the previous spot lamps and the headlight interiors transitioned from chrome to a black finish. The three exterior colour options are Rooftop Grey, Island Blue and Zesty Yellow.
Including a new sports steering wheel and a standard five-inch digital instrument cluster further elevated the MINI Cooper S’s line-up. The introduction of Adaptive Suspension was also a significant addition. This innovative system continuously assesses and adjusts the vehicle’s suspension by employing continuous frequency-selective damping. This edition is available in Petrol and Diesel engine types with manual and automatic gearbox options.
Practicality and style of the car
Most used three-door MINI Cooper S trims offer a boot capacity of 211 litres with the rear seats in their upright position, expanding to 731 litres when they are folded down. The five-door variant is the roomier choice with 278 litres of boot capacity and 941 litres with the seats folded down. The rear seats can transform into a supplementary storage space. These seats are designed to split and fold in a 50/50 configuration which accommodates sizable items such as large boxes and shopping trips. Most used MINI Cooper S variants typically come equipped with ISOFIX child car seat mounting points, making it suitable for families.
Although the MINI might be pretty mini, it can tow an impressive 750kg. As such, it’s highly suitable for various tasks such as towing small trailers, transporting outdoor equipment or even pulling lightweight camper trailers for adventurous getaways.
Running costs
For most used MINI Cooper S versions, the annual road tax rate is £180. The insurance group range for this version is 18 to 36.
How a used MINI Cooper S drives
The 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine comes equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. The Cooper S returns 48.7mpg and emits 136g/km of CO2 emissions. For those who prefer automatic transmission, a six-speed automatic gearbox is available. It manages 0-62mph in 7.2 seconds with 140bhp.
The 2.0-litre turbodiesel is a common diesel engine choice for many MINI Cooper S models. Accelerating from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds it offers 187bhp. When you reduce throttle input, the diesel engine achieves an impressive 65.7mpg fuel efficiency and emits 114g/km of carbon dioxide, highlighting its environmentally conscious attributes. This engine comes with a six-speed manual gearbox.
Features you can expect in a MINI Cooper S
Interior and technology
The retro-chic aesthetic that has contributed to MINI’s popularity has been refined with the MINI Cooper S. Emphasis has been placed on the interior elements like the centrally mounted speedometer which has been enlarged and the inclusion of additional ‘rocker’ switches, reminiscent of the original design. The driving position maintains an upright stance but still offers remarkable comfort during extended journeys. The vehicle also provides all-round visibility.
There is plenty of head and legroom for front occupants, ensuring a relaxing experience. Another notable addition is the ability to alter the interior lighting colour that outlines the instrument readouts with a simple switch, from orange to blue and vice versa. This feature showcases how this model can be personalised to align with individual preferences.
Enhancing the MINI Cooper S’s sporty demeanour is a sports suspension package that improves the firmness of the springs and dampers. The sports button option increases the steering’s responsiveness and sharpens the throttle, creating an exciting driving experience.
Most used trims, including the Exclusive trim, come with MINI Driving Modes. These offer a choice between sport, mid and green settings through a central toggle switch. The MINI Cooper S also features heated windscreen washer jets, hill start assist, the "keyless go" feature for a hassle-free start and LED headlights emphasising MINI's iconic closed-ring design.
Safety
The MINI Cooper S was awarded a commendable adult occupant protection score of 79% and a child occupant score of 73% by the Euro NCAP collision test. It scored four out of five stars.
