Škoda overview

Founded by Václav Laurin and Václav Klement, Škoda – pronounced shKOW-duh – began as a bicycle business in the 1890s. In 1899 the company’s first motorcycle factory opened, and by 1905 the firm was making automobiles. Taken over by Emil Škoda in 1925, the brand became one of the largest in the Czech automotive market. In 1994 the Volkswagen Group acquired a 60% share in the business and Škoda Auto became a wholly owned subsidiary of the group in 2000.

Škoda has become known for the dynamic design of its vehicles and its human-centric approach. The Simply Clever tagline embodies this, endowing each vehicle with features and innovations to make everyday life easier. The brand offers high-quality cars with a reasonable price tag, delivering practicality and comfort across its range.

Now focusing on electrification, Škoda has introduced several hybrid and electric models to its lineup. Plug-in hybrid variants of the Octavia, Superb and Kodiaq (all branded iV) all provide a more eco-conscious option, and the all-electric ENYAQ iV was introduced in 2020.

Launched in 1996, the Škoda Octavia is a mid-size family car that strikes the perfect balance between comfort, practicality and performance. The model is available in hatchback, estate and vRS hatch variations and has evolved over four generations. The Škoda Kamiq is the brand’s smallest SUV. Introduced in 2019, it comes with a range of engine options and a generous standard specification, making it highly appealing to families and those living in towns and cities. By 2021, European sales for the Kamiq had topped 170,000.

The Karoq is Škoda’s mid-size SUV, created to cope with anything an active family or adventurous owner needs. It has a rugged design, a roomy interior and a host of clever convenience features. The model was released in 2017 and was the brand’s best-selling SUV in 2020.

The Škoda Fabia hatchback arrived in 2000, followed a year later by estate and saloon models. Its sporty looks and innovative technology have made it a popular choice on UK roads. Since its launch, the model has sold over 4.5 million units.

First released in 2001, the Škoda Superb is a spacious family car that comes in hatchback and estate forms. Boasting a striking design and precise handling, it has remained popular through four generations. The Superb Estate iV plug-in hybrid variant became available in 2020, offering 34 miles of zero-emissions range.

In recent years, Škoda has enjoyed critical acclaim for its models from top magazines such as Fleet News and Auto Express. Its commitment to providing value for money has been recognised in the Best Value awards it has received from What Car? Including Best Value Estate Car for the Superb in 2022 and Best Value Family Car for the Scala in 2023.

Clever yet sporty design is an integral part of the Škoda brand, and this has been reflected in the Fabia’s receipt of no fewer than three Red Dot Design Awards – in 2008, 2015 and 2022. In 2021, the manufacturer was also presented with a Red Dot Design Award in the Interface and User Experience category following the introduction of its MyŠkoda smartphone app.

Since the launch of the all-electric ENYAQ iV, Škoda has picked up an impressive number of accolades for the model at prestigious awards ceremonies. It won Best Value Electric Car at the Top Gear Awards in 2022, as well as being named Car of the Year at the 2022 Parkers Awards.
