Michio Suzuki founded Suzuki (pronounced suh-ZOO-kee) in 1909, in the small village of Hamamatsu. For the first 30 years of its life, the firm built weaving looms. In 1937, Michio Suzuki decided to diversify and spent the next two years producing small car prototypes. Production halted during the Second World War. By 1954 the business was building motorcycles each month and changed its name to Suzuki Motor Co. Ltd. Its first automobile was the Suzuki Suzulight, hailing the beginning of global success.

By the late 1960s, Suzuki had established itself in the US and Thailand. Over the ensuing decades, the brand continued to expand its operations. Today, Suzuki GB PLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the brand, headquartered in Milton Keynes since 2006. Suzuki is one of the world’s top ten automotive manufacturers. In the first half of 2023 alone, it registered over 10,000 vehicles in the UK.

Suzuki is known for its reliability and has won a range of awards over the years for its cars and customer service. In the 2022 What Car? Reliability Survey, in which readers report on their vehicle ownership experience, Suzuki finished top out of 27 brands with an overall score of 97%. This achievement was soon followed in 2023 by a number one spot on the UK Customer Satisfaction Index for automotive brands. Published by the Institute of Customer Service, it measured 259 organisations, of which 26 vehicle manufacturers were included. Suzuki finished in 22nd place across all sectors.

These accolades reflect the brand’s commitment to producing affordable yet dependable vehicles. Previous recognition includes the Most Improved Manufacturer of the Year Award at the 2020 Fleet News Awards. The win was a result of Suzuki’s efforts to improve its fleet and leasing offerings, which led to an increased fleet market share.
