What is the Suzuki Vitara SZ4?

A trusted and reliable car on the roads, the Suzuki Vitara made its first appearance all the way back in 1988. Over the decades, it has evolved from an offroad SUV to a sleek crossover that has the style of more premium models. To date, four generations have been released, refining the Suzuki Vitara into a hardy, well-equipped family car that's earned a reputation for being both reliable and spacious.

Starting as one of the market’s first mini SUVs, the Vitara had developed into a subcompact crossover SUV by its fourth generation. The entry-level Suzuki Vitara SZ4 is a cost-conscious choice that gives you the same powerful-looking exterior, spacious cabin and comfortable ride without the premium extras. It's a strong option if you’re looking at cars like the Suzuki S-Cross, Peugeot 2008 Active Premium and the Ford Puma Titanium.

Suzuki Vitara SZ4 history

The Suzuki Vitara debuted as an offroad-style mini SUV in 1988. Its second generation came out in 1998 and received three facelifts, which made the car larger, more angular and aggressive in appearance. By 2005, the Mk3 Vitara had greater ground clearance and stronger suspension but was made shorter overall. It was the third generation of Vitara that saw the introduction of the SZ4 as an entry-level trim option, making the trim a key part of the Vitara’s story.

The Mk4 Suzuki Vitara was released in 2015 and was given a facelift in 2018 for the car’s 30th-anniversary milestone – giving it a contemporary, powerful silhouette and a slightly smaller, but still spacious, body size. The SZ4 trim on the Mk4 has, for the most part, been the model’s entry-level option. This changed only in 2022 when the trim levels were reconfigured in line with the Vitara’s new hybrid offering.

There are three main engine options available with a Suzuki Vitara SZ4. The entry-level engine, the 1.0-litre Boosterjet, has 109bhp and 170Nm of torque. It goes from 0-62mph in 11.5 seconds. The 1.6-litre petrol engine has a five-speed manual gearbox. It uses its 120bhp and 155Nm of torque to achieve 0-62mph in 11.5 seconds.

If you’d prefer a mild hybrid Suzuki Vitara SZ4, the Boosterjet 129MHEV engine is a good option. It has 127bhp, 235Nm of torque and goes from 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds. It has a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Where does the Suzuki Vitara SZ4 sit in the range?

The SZ4 was the entry-level trim until 2022 when the trim range was reconfigured with the new hybrid Vitara in mind. It's a cost-effective choice with all of the Suzuki Vitara’s essential features included, making it well-suited to drivers who prioritise space and reliability over exciting add-ons. You'll still get essential features like Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control and even stylish touches like a chrome bumper and windows that are tinted to reduce sun glare.

What features and equipment does the Vitara SZ4 have?

Even though it’s an entry-level trim, the Suzuki Vitara SZ4 isn’t basic. It has auto stop/start technology, adaptive cruise control that keeps you at a safe distance from other vehicles wherever you’re driving and fully electric windows all round. You can stay cool on warm days with automatic air conditioning and keep good visibility on rainy days without doing anything thanks to automatic windscreen wipers.

On the outside, you’ll spot handy roof rails that boost the car’s already ample storage space. There are lots of sharp touches, like 16-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured door handles and mirrors. The door mirrors are heated and electrically fold in to keep them out of harm’s way on tight streets.

Sitting in a handy central position, the 4.2-inch infotainment screen offers a clear, fuss-free view of navigation and entertainment. It’s controlled by buttons on the steering wheel and has Bluetooth connectivity, a USB charging point and a DAB radio. You can also play music through the built-in CD player.

There are plenty of practical cubbies around the Suzuki Vitara SZ4’s cabin. All four doors have large bottle holders and there are two handy cup holders in the front. If you’re transporting big loads, the handy double luggage room boot floor opens up for maximum storage capacity.

The Suzuki Vitara SZ4’s features don’t compromise on safety, either. It has an electronic stability program, hill hold control and dual-sensor brake support, which can detect hazards and help bring the car to a safe stop. SZ4s have lane departure warning and prevention, and vehicle-sway warning – all of which can detect if you’re tired or distracted behind the wheel and warn you to pull over.
