What is the VW Golf R-Line?

The R-Line is based on the Volkswagen Golf R, the hot hatch cousin of the Volkswagen Golf. With the R standing for ‘Racing’, owners can expect their Golf R-Line to deliver great performance. Undergoing a series of generations and facelifts since 1974, the Volkswagen Golf is still today one of Volkswagen’s most popular models.

Offering owners a refined driving experience with its stylish looks and efficient engines, the Volkswagen Golf R-Line is a mid-to-upper level trim for the model. The family hatchback is a great choice for drivers looking for a fun yet practical car.

Thanks to its powerful engines, the Volkswagen Golf R-Line is great for getting about town and for longer journeys on the motorway. The Golf R-Line rivals the Audi A3 S-Line, Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG-Line and the BMW 1 Series M Sport.

VW Golf R-Line history

First launched in 1974, the Mk1 Volkswagen Golf was designed to replace the famous Beetle model. Balancing practicality with performance, the first generation of the Volkswagen Golf sold more than six million units, making it one of the most popular models in the Volkswagen range.

The R-Line was first unveiled as a trim on the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 during its mid-life facelift in 2015. It was designed as a performance trim. Thanks to its selection of premium cabin technology and luxury interiors, it is at the higher end of the Golf’s trim range. It also maintained much of the entry-level Golf’s practicality and hatchback price tag, giving it significant all-round appeal.

On the exterior, the R-Line was given a signature styling pack to help it stand out. Both the front and rear bumpers were restyled with a large spoiler reflecting its sports styling. It also came with new sills and a radiator grille, with signature R-Line badging featuring throughout.

The cabin’s design mimics the feel of a sports car through its upmarket sports seats. These are manufactured with contemporary cloth on the central section, with San Remo microfibre side bolsters offering extra lumbar support as you turn corners. There is also precision contrast stitching that adds welcome detailing.

It is available with a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TSI EVO engine. This engine generates 148bhp and accelerates from 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. It also has a top speed of 134mph. There is also a 2.0-litre diesel engine which produces 148bhp. It goes from 0-62mph in 8.6 seconds.

The Volkswagen Golf Mk8 came to market in 2019. The R-Line trim benefitted from the new inner and outer design of the model. It is available with a powerful 1.5-litre petrol engine which can produce 128 or 148bhp. The former variant goes from 0-62mph in 9.2 seconds while the latter does it in 8.5 seconds. It can also come with a 2.0-litre diesel which goes from 0-62mph 8.4 seconds. Inside the cabin, these powerful engines are muted ensuring you enjoy an efficient drive with little sound discomfort.

This iteration of the R-Line added interior and exterior styling enhancements, as well as useful technology such as adaptive cruise control, which makes it a more rewarding drive on long journeys.

Where does the VW Golf R-Line sit in the range?

Since its release, the R-Line has been a mid and upper-level trim on the Volkswagen Golf. In the Mk7, it sits above entry-level trims such as the S and Match. But it also sits below the GTI, GTD, GTE and R trims that have more powerful engines and technology. It is above the SE and SE Nav trims which were discontinued in 2018.

In the Mk8, it sits above the Life and Style trims and below the GTE and R options.

What features and equipment does the Golf R-Line have?

Available with diesel, petrol or hybrid powertrains, the Golf R-Line offers owners a fun driving experience with efficient engines and great handling. The driving experience is enhanced as the R-Line trim includes sports suspension, which firms up the ride, imitating a performance car. The driving mode selector, which adjusts the way the car drives, and progressive steering, which helps drivers with steering at high speeds, deliver a satisfying drive.

Inside, the R-Line has some unique styling features. These include, in the interior, front sports seats with integrated headrests, a heated leather sports steering wheel, rear privacy glass and LED lights that help to illuminate the stylish interior. There are also some unique styling features on the exterior, with redesigned front and rear body-coloured bumpers giving the R-Line a sporty look, 17-inch alloy wheels and R-Line badging around the vehicle.
