Some would argue that Nissan changed the automotive landscape with the release of the Qashqai. Up until that point, the SUV was not as popular as it is today and was usually positioned at the premium end of a manufacturer’s vehicle range. Nissan changed this with the Qashqai, an everyday affordable SUV that appealed to a wider audience and could be utilised for more than just the occasional jaunt off-road.

The Qashqai remains the nation’s favourite and was the best-selling car in 2022, achieving more sales than any other model with any body type. Interestingly, out of the top 10 bestselling cars in 2022, four of them were SUVs.

Nissan Qashqai updates and facelifts

First launched in 2006, The Nissan Qashqai is a popular compact SUV that offers either front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Designed and built in the UK, it is one of Nissan’s most popular models and is their fastest-selling car. The 2010 model was released with a facelift and went on to win the Used Car of the Year by CAP.

This model featured a redesigned front end and new instruments. Achieving a score of 95% for safety assist, the Qashqai is only beaten by the Tesla Model S and Y in this category. It also achieved adult and child occupant protection scores of 91%. The Qashqai +2, the larger seven-seater version, was launched in 2009 to compete with the larger cars in the SUV class.

Practicality and style of the car

The Qashqai has established itself as one of the SUV/crossover cars of choice on the market. With its great range of trims that cater to every budget and fantastic features at each level, it is easy to understand how the Nissan Qashqai became the nation’s favourite SUV.

The exceptional NCAP ratings that were powered by the car’s proven safety features are alone worth your attention. From the electronic stability control to the driver drowsiness detection to the lane departure warning, you can feel safest in the Qashqai.

Whether you are taking the family caravan on holiday or running the kids into school, or if you just need a vehicle that is a little more spacious but doesn’t require huge space to park, then the Qashqai ticks every box. The 1.6-litre diesel sports an impressive, braked towing capacity of 1,800kg. With a luxurious interior that you would expect from a car with a more premium price tag, to a wide array of features, the Qashqai offers great value for money.

How a used Nissan Qashqai drives

When it comes to engine choices and efficiency, the Qashqai has numerous options – there have been 30 variations since 2007 with differing MPG ratings. The 2018 1.3-litre turbo that superseded the 1.2-litre petrol engine is available with either 138bhp or 158bhp, a significant increase from the 115bhp that was generated by the 1.2-litre model. The most popular diesel model utilises the 1.5-litre that delivers 74mpg, while there is a larger 1.6-litre for those that want a bit more oomph – whether that’s for a nippier experience or for those drivers that tow frequently.
