Toyota overview
Toyota was incorporated in 1937 by Kiichiro Toyoda. Taking inspiration from his father’s weaving looms, Toyoda created an automotive division in 1933 and released prototype vehicles before becoming a separate business in 1937. The name Toyota is pronounced toy-oh-tah (or using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA): tɔɪˈəʊtə).
The brand produces a range of practical cars for families, alongside some models designed with performance in mind. It also made the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Prius, cementing its name as an innovative car brand.
Popular Toyota models
Toyota is well-known for producing reliable cars thanks to its focus on quality engineering and has scooped many awards as a result. Individual models have also won prestigious accolades. The Corolla Touring Sports and GT86, for example, both earned the top spot for their categories in the AutoExpress 2023 awards. The Toyota Yaris gained the title of Best Small Car for an impressive three years in a row in the Business Car Awards. In 2023, the RAV4 Plug-in was rated most satisfying car to own in the Which? survey.
Another popular choice is the Toyota Aygo. This entry-level model gives urban drivers a reliable and cost-effective runaround. Some upgraded Aygo trims have sporty finishing for a more exhilarating experience. Toyota consistently sells upwards of 80,000 Aygo models a year. Another best-selling model is the Toyota Yaris. This supermini represented over one-third of Toyota’s sales in Europe in 2022. Today, the Yaris is only available with a petrol-hybrid powertrain, but you will find used models with combustion engines for sale.
Released in 2016, the C-HR brought a fresh look to the C-segment. It moved away from SUV styling to present a more dynamic, athletic appearance. It comes with a choice of hybrid engines, delivering a reliable and frugal performance. One reason that the C-HR is so popular with drivers is because of its shared platform with the Toyota Corolla, the brand’s best-selling car of all time. Since its first release in 1966, this model has achieved over 50 million sales across 12 generations. It exited UK sales in 2008 but returned in 2023.
The automotive industry has the RAV4 to thank for kickstarting the SUV craze in the 1990s. Considered the first compact crossover, and it has been a mainstay ever since. Today, it is only available as a petrol hybrid, but some used Toyota Rav4 cars will have petrol or diesel powertrains.
Manufacturer awards
Toyota set the standard for electric and hybrid cars with the launch of its Prius, which received a lifetime achievement award in the TopGear Electric Awards 2023. It was released in the UK as a niche model in 2000 but has since delivered more than 5.7 million global sales. The Toyota brand stands out for its electric and hybrid innovation, with models across its hatchback, crossover and SUV range available with an electric motor. This includes the Yaris, Yaris Cross, Corolla Hatchback, CH-4, RAV4 and b74X. Many of these models are self-charging, meaning drivers don’t need to plug in at home or on the road.
Given Toyota’s dedication to engineering innovation, it will come as no surprise that it developed the world’s best-selling petrol-electric hybrid system, Hybrid Synergy Drive. This technology coordinates the two power sources – electric motor and petrol engine – so they can work simultaneously or separately. Its next development is a hydrogen-powered model that uses a chemical reaction to generate electricity.

How does Toyota hybrid work?
Toyota offers two kinds of hybrid models: self-charging and plug-ins. They all combine a combustion engine with an electric motor.
For the self-charging powertrains, a generator charges the battery while the combustion engine powers the car. When driving at low speeds, the generator cuts the combustion engine to operate on all-electric alone. There is no need to plug them in at home as the generator and engine work together to keep the battery powered.
With Toyota plug-in hybrids, the driver can usually switch between driving modes to use electric and combustion engine power. These cars have a larger battery to allow for all-electric driving, but they need to be charged at home or via dedicated charging points.
Which Toyota models have intelligent park assist?
Intelligent park assist is available on upgraded trims of all new Toyota models. You will also find them on premium-level trims of many used Toyota cars, as the intelligent parking sensors were introduced in 2006.

What is B Gear in Toyota?
Some Toyotas have an ‘S’ gear and ‘B’ gear. ‘S’ stands for sport, and it holds lower gears for longer to deliver more power. The ‘B’ gear option also holds lower gears, but they increase engine drag and help slow the car when going downhill. It is sometimes called ‘automatic gear braking’.
