The Toyota Aygo was built for the city. This supermini hatchback first launched alongside the Peugeot 108 and Citroën C1 in 2005, with all three sharing a factory in the Czech Republic.

Toyota Aygo updates and facelifts

2014's Mk2 carried on its legacy. Exclusively made with a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine, the Aygo saw several facelifts (in 2012 and 2018) during its two-generation run, keeping its appearance stylish and modern.

The Aygo was given a complete visual overhaul with the Mk2, with brake lines giving it its distinctive X-shaped face. The colour combinations available on the Mk2 are extensive, both externally and internally. The amount of personality this sub-one-tonne car packs is impressive and has cemented the Mk2 Aygo as a visual icon. During its life, several limited-edition trims have seen the Aygo sporting various bold, striking colours, like the Mk2's bright orange X-Cite Mandarin.

The Mk2 Aygo won WhatCar?'s Best Value Buy of 2020, and the WhatCar? Reliability Survey 2020 crowned the Toyota Aygo Mk2 as Most Reliable Car, with a reliability rating of 99.1%.

Compared to its fun and quirky predecessor, the new Aygo X (pronounced "Cross") blends a nippy little city car with a rugged SUV, sporting a slightly longer wheelbase, more ground clearance, and a once-again overhauled look that exudes refinement and sensibility.

Practicality and style of the car

Whether you're looking for an inner-city runaround or a new car for a first-time driver, a used Toyota Aygo is an attractive choice.

The Mk1 Toyota Aygo is 3,420mm long, the Mk2 is 3,465mm long, and the Aygo X is 3,700mm. Whichever generation of Aygo you choose, it'll comfortably fit in most garages, on most driveways, and in those tricky street parking spaces many other city cars might struggle to fit in.

The Aygo puts the emphasis on the driving experience rather than cramming the dashboard with technology. Especially for new drivers, this distraction-free cockpit is perfect. There are plenty of places to store smaller items in the car, with a roomy glove compartment as well as cupholders and reasonably-sized door bins.

The Mk2's double bubble roof means taller passengers can sit comfortably in the front seats, while ISOFIX car mounts make the rear seats perfect for little passengers in car seats.

The Toyota Aygo's carrying space is great for the weekly shop, with a boot space of 138 litres for the Mk1 Aygo, increasing to around 168 litres with the Mk2, and 269 litres for the Aygo X. With the rear seats folded down, you'll get 751 litres, 812 litres and 829 litres of boot space respectively.

There are three and five-door options available for both Mk1 and Mk2 Toyota Aygos, while the Aygo X comes exclusively with five doors.

Running costs

The Toyota Aygo provides great value for money and returns up to 68.9mpg depending on the trim, meaning you don't need to worry about refuelling all the time, even in a car this small.

The Toyota Aygo is also cheap to insure, falling between insurance groups 1 and 9 depending on the generation and trim you choose. Depending on the trim, a Mk1 Aygo will be in either road tax band A or B, meaning the most you'll pay is around £20 per year, while the Mk2 is between A and C, costing no more than £35 annually.

How a used Toyota Aygo drives

Driving the Mk2 feels much like its predecessor, as both cars share the same engine. Drivers are treated to a nimble drive, with less roll in corners than the Mk1 and equally impressive fuel economy.

VVT-i petrol engine, generating around 68bhp. There are some diesel engines in older Mk1 Aygos, but none have been present since 2007. The petrol engine delivers a peak torque of 93Nm, and can comfortably tackle motorways.

You are most likely to find a used Toyota Aygo with five-speed manual transmission, but there are some semi-automatic versions available, such as the X-Shift trim. This trim has shorter gear ratios, making acceleration feel snappier around town.

Features you can expect in a Toyota Aygo

Interior

Most Mk1 Toyota Aygos feature a radio with a CD player and AUX connectivity. An adjustable steering wheel makes driving that much more comfortable, and intuitively placed controls within the cockpit make operating the car easy so you can keep your mind on the road.

The seats remain comfortable for the whole duration of the average work commute. Like a Fiat Panda, the Toyota Aygo offers a plucky drive, with a comfortable drive and plenty of grip when handling tight corners.

Technology

Second-generation Toyota Aygos introduce a bit more technology. Upper-end trims can include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for easily integrated smartphone functionality, along with an intuitive 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that makes navigation, communication and entertainment simpler.

Matching the fun style of the exterior, the inside features Toyota's iconic rotating circular air vents which add a splash of colour to the dash. Depending on the trim, you'll find a leather-bound steering wheel with media controls, making for a comfortable grip that lets you use the infotainment system hands free. Featuring hardwearing plastics, the inside of the car feels reassuringly durable.

Safety

The Aygo's current-standing Euro NCAP score is three out of five stars, with 74% adult occupant protection and 63% child occupant protection. When tested with the optional safety pack, it achieved four stars, with 82% adult occupant protection and 63% child occupant protection.

All versions of the Mk2 come with four airbags. With relevant trims, a tyre pressure monitoring system makes it easy to keep on top of your tyre health, while stability control, lane-departure alerts and pre-collision systems help keep you safe on the road.

The X-Play adds some tech, bringing the Aygo up to date. Power-adjustable heated door mirrors help with rear visibility in cold and wet weather. Steering-wheel-mounted audio controls mean you can keep your eye on the road while taking hands-free calls or controlling the radio. The touchscreen infotainment screen has DAB radio and displays a rear-view camera to help you park safely. Passengers can ride in comfort on hot days thanks to the air conditioning pumped through the iconic rotating circular air vents. For tactile comfort, the steering wheel and gear lever are leather-bound, while the grey seat fabric is bolstered with white for a dynamic and eye-catching aesthetic.
